Persimmon driver

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the size, in cc, of a persimmon driver?

In 1993, I bought a set of 1200, system 45, by Wilson (Metal woods) The size of the driver's head doesn't seem to be any larger than a persimmon. Even Wilson can't tell me the size of it. The FWs could compare to a Hybrid by today's standards.

Don't quote this as gospel from me. The early metal drivers like Jiggered posted were around 285 290 cc so to speak. I never played those in that age because I had a bad rope hooking problem and the combo of the hot metal faces and weak graphite shafts really exaggerated that for me. I played persimmon front line in comps and all until 01 or so. LOL back in the summer I was on the range hitting one of my old Mac fairways and this kid was beside me around 14 years old or so. He asked me in all sincerity " Sir when did they start making hybrids out of wood?" I explained it to him and we compared it to his Cally hybrid. In fact the little Mac Custom 4 wood was a touch smaller than his hybrid.

Persimmons are around 190cc to 200cc, based on the info at Louisville Golf. Their Classic 50s driver is 190cc, the LFF they're selling is 200cc. The Whale, 250cc. (edited to add: the Osage driver they sold for a while was 185cc)

The Big Bertha was 195cc, the GBB 253cc, and the Biggest Big Bertha was 290 or 295 (found first two on intarwebs, but not the BBB).

Guy from GEA measured the J's Professional Weapon he sent me, but I don't remember what he got; I think it was 170cc at the most, may have been around 150something.

LOL....And I am here, at 75, learning from all of you.

Side Note: My Wilson came with a steel shaft. Except for the grooves, there was nothing hot about that face, The whole head looked and felt like it was made from a ball of SS.

I had to take a second look. That middle Titleist looks exactly like my Wilson. And, 11° to boot.

Thanx for sharing.

For someone like me, it's a monumental chalenge to post pics. I so much wanted to post pics of the whole set, at least the diff woods, like you did with the woods comparison.

I had thought of that...But,

1) On here, I was offered an easy way out

2) I made things complicated by not thinking of the 4 cup Pyrex

Thanx for the Kickstart.

Glad you mentioned the Louisville Golf persimmons---- Reminded me I have a set of Louisville Golf persimmon woods I found 6 months ago or so. I think they are Driver 3 wood and I think 5 wood. I had cleaned them up because some moron had evidently been hitting off of mats and the green stuff was all over them. The 5 wood was bent in the neck from hitting the mats. I had un whipped it and checked for damage and had straightened and re whipped it. Had waxed them up with Minwax and put covers on them. Frankly forgot them until you mentioned Louisville Golf. Thanks may pull them out and play vintage with them tomorrow afternoon

the big bertha was the game changer. The Pittsburgh persimmon and early metal were so so, marginally longer than wood, but that metallic clang even on sold hits was dreadful. The BB turned a 220 drive into 230+, and the mishits were the key. If you mishit persimmon you were lucky to hit it 200 yd. The BB meant 210-220 on misses.

Whenever I loose sight/feel of the center face of the modern driver, I go to the range with the Wilson. As far as the FWs are concerned, you could say they are close to the old Tight-Lies.
