Tourstriker Planemate

Recommended Posts

Not on tour. Never will be. Never wanted to be...

But, this is the most positive and optimistic I’ve been going into a season, and truly feel like I’m beginning to “own my swing”. The PM is helping me feel things and learn about my swing and how to self correct better than any training aid I’ve tried in the past. And, it’s motivated me to spend more time working on my swing than ever before. So, is it a miracle worker? Far from it... is it worth it to me, and apparently quite a few other mid-handicap hackers who want to finally make a leap to consistent, good golf? Absolutely.

Full swing work with the plane mate is still a work in progress for me. Struggling with flattening on the downswing and my wrist angles

However, on pitches and chips, I cannot believe how much the plane mate has transformed my game. If this ends up being the only benefit I get from the plane mate I will be more than happy. Hopefully the full swing stuff will come

I get it. I like the aid. Were all trying to get better. Use it for what its worth, take off the training wheels and fly. All changes take time, persistence is the key. Keep what works, discard what doesn't. Revisit all from time to time. Ive hit 100000's of balls, have 1000s of my swings on video. I'm in that camp. And you know what, it only took me 20 years to finally say I have a pretty good move. Best of luck to all us guys.

Yes. I found that the PM was causing me to have an open clubface at impact. I believe there are some comments earlier in the thread where a member stopped using the PM for this very reason. I believe he was scratch, so a much better player. But for me, high single digits, I found that using more grip strength (NOT a stronger golf grip) really helped. The tension of the band wants to pull the face open. I felt that changing to a stronger grip would probably mess me up when I played without the PM. So, I just sort of use a "tighter" grip (not stronger grip). Caveat is that I have to really focus on keeping my hands soft when I take the PM off, or else I lose any sort of wrist cock and lose significant yardage.

Kadey, if you have the PM, don't give up on it just yet due to spraying the ball right. I find that my PM practice sessions are mostly little cuts right of target. Then, without the PM, I'm hitting nice little draws just left of target. Can't explain why that is, but I love it.

Yes and no. If you previously stalled/flipped to square the face and are now pivoting better and getting some decent shaft lean, there is a very good chance you are not closing the face properly with in shaft rotation (ie flexing the lead wrist, extending the trail wrist, motorcycle move, etc). In these cases going to a stronger grip just makes it easier to square the face (ie need to flex the lead wrist less). But this isn't unique to the PM, it's just how the pivot driven swing works.

An open face probably means the person hasn't twisted (motorcycle move) the club in downswing to get it closed - if you haven't been doing it before and then you add the planemate that works against it then i see how one can really get the face open.

Comment for Protocol 5 once I reach the top of the backswing---I believe in the method but I'm think I'm getting confused with what I used to do.

As previously mentioned from the top my hips would slide forward and I would tilt back with my arms and hands moving out from my body to shallow leaving myself in a terrible position to hit the golf ball.

As long as I rotate and don't fall back with excessive tilt there's nothing wrong with the hands relaxing and clubface opening right?

I guess I'm worried about in transition getting too far laid off from the top...am I wrong in my thinking?

You should use mirror/video to check backswing because if you don’t, you can get very laid off if you aren’t doing it properly. It’s been mentioned to feel like you’re holding an umbrella up vertically. Whatever feel works for you, stick with it because if you’re going back still with forearm roll and the momentum of the club gets behind you, the band will pull it further back.

Coming down, your arms and pivot can be synched up, but you must do something to make sure club isn’t open at impact. There’s many different ways to do this but the PM doesn’t help with it because it’s all about the resist/relax motion (high level). You can flex lead wrist (motorcycle move), get a ton of shaft lean (hands way out front like DJ), have a lot of right tilt (like Fleetwood)...or combinations of all 3. Basically it’s something unique to each player and if matched up properly, they all can work. You just need to figure out for yourself what you can do to get the face to square up/not be open through the hitting zone.

Have you guys that are struggling with the club face watched the “Advanced Protocols”?

Specifically “Advanced Protocol #4: Delivery Position” and “Advanced Protocol #5: Impact Position”. This is the information you need regarding those misses to the right for a right handed player.

Thanks for the feedback @hurley999s! Want to also give credit to @glk again because he pointed out how laid off I was in my initial video swing from a couple of weeks ago. I've always been laid off but didn't think much of it. When I started working with the PM I didn't realize it was making me even more laid off before putting on video as you mention. Here's a link to my initial video where I'm laid off in the backswing.
https://youtu.be/GJMTW8Rfo9QHere's a video from Friday night working to resist to the top and fighting the band to not get laid off.
https://youtu.be/4qkT0XQl6zMHad the opportunity to hit some balls outside at a park yesterday. I'm reminded as many have posted that it will be a work in progress for several weeks/months to overcome some of my swing flaws. I'm sure some of you can relate but when I try to go full speed with full swing I quickly revert to my old habits.
Best of luck to each of you in your journey!

Setup looks better. Keep at it. Slow is the way to go. Mix it up don’t just swing with it on. Space out reps. Try variations - get an alignment stick and use it. Can do it with stick both on lead side and trail side. Here a recent one from iteach with stick on trail side - note the pace.

Am I the only one that’s not seeing immediate progress

its working pretty good with wedges, except for the occasional pull that’s goes 10 yards deep

but I am finding my self really coming way inside of the ball causing over draws on the course

i think The smart ball is working out better for me than the planemate

It’s hard work to resist at the top. You have to get the vertical (stand up like a umbrella) part correct.

Second round out and a 1000x better. Not perfect by any stretch but very promising. The thought of a pressure shift instead of a weight shift and being careful to not get too quick is huge or me. Day 5 protocol is the one I concentrate on the most.

i did wear down on the back. It’s a hilly course and I carried for a full 18 for the first time in months.
