PGA Champ to be cancelled due to Coronavirus? (NO POLITICS)

Golf Digest, as other media, fear mongering idiots.

The SF declaration is non news, but unfortunately the idiot mayor wanted to look all proactive and on top of things, but ended up screwing over business in SF.

The declaration is simply for legal reasons to open the doors for SF to claim State and Fed funding, as well as to "streamline" other services. In other words, as usual city officials want to spend a bunch of money they do not have, so by declaring "emergency" they get someone else to foot the bill. And in other words...more reasons for city workers to get non-essential overtime pay.

The ridiculous thing is the declaration is only good for 7 days, then the city's board of supervisors can vote to extend. They could have just skipped straight to the Board part. Bu oh no, have to get those headlines.

And here are the suckers at Golf Digest linking this to a PGA cancellation. Dirtbags.

Total over-reaction. Yes, it is a new pathogen, but let's put it in perspective because almost 60 million people die annually. Even if it were to get out of hand, it really won't be more than a drop in the bucket when you stack it up to the number of people that die from Heart disease and Cancer. Most people that contract it will get flu-like symptoms and be sick for a few days. An unfortunate few will die. Just like any other flu. Far too much hysteria surrounding this and in a few months it likely will be just a footnote in the world health system. The amount of time and money that will go into this in 6 months could likely be better used in finding a cure for Cancer.DON'T PANIC!!!

Two things,

First, the comparisons to the flu need to be tempered. The coronavirus mortality rate is 7X that of the flu and may be on par the the Spanish Flu.

A case fatality rate of between 2% to 4% rivals and even exceeds that of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, which is estimated to have killed upwards of 50 million people. Even a case fatality rate of 0.7% — which means 7 out of every 1,000 infected people would die — is sobering. It is seven times the fatality rate for seasonal flu, which is estimated to kill between 290,000 and 650,000 people a year globally.https://www.statnews.com/2020/02/25/new-data-from-china-buttress-fears-about-high-coronavirus-fatality-rate-who-expert-says/

Second, as far as economic activity, as mentioned, both Apple and Microsoft have already warned about earnings impact due to how tightly our economy is woven with China.'

So, we can all hope for the best, But consider that this is not this is just the first year and future impact, years down the road, is hard to predict.

I have read all those numbers. I understand all of that. There are other factors in China that are helping raise those numbers. 1 for example is the high percentage of smokers.

This is how Wall Street players manipulate the markets. It's nothing new.

It's shocking that we continue to let this happen. Punishment for disrupting the lives, the retirements of others so a very select few can profit off the movement of capital in/out of the markets should be death by hanging in the public square. On Wall Street.

I have a rather reactionary friend who is stocking up his house with food and lamenting his inability to find biological rated masks that aren't made in China. He told me he probably won't be playing golf for our season this year, won't go to restaurants, won't go to supermarkets, and is ordering everything online. He and his wife plan to spend the year not leaving the house.

West nile, then SARS, then avian flu, then swine flu, then ebola, then zika, now corona.

As a civilization we are very prone to sensationalism and overreaction. The real impact of this particular situation is on manufacturing and the ripple effect through every category, brand, market, and industry due to the world's reliance on Chinese factories.

There is, perhaps, some point to be made concerning the so-called "hysteria" or "panic" in the media, on Wall Street, and the idiots buying up face masks. Perhaps we shouldn't be waiting for the sky to fall. A valid point.

Having said that, I do think that there is ample reason to be concerned and cautious. From the very beginning of this thing, epidemiologists, infectious disease specialists, doctors, and centers for disease control have been alarmed. When you have that level of consensus, and that level of alarm, it should show you something. It is highly unlikely that all of those people are wrong.

The market is just a number reflecting a multiple of the earnings forecasts for the companies in the index.

The markets had been pricing a 7% earnings increase in the S&P 500 and now GS and Barclays have slashed that to zero or even lower YoY earnings. Too pessemistic? Maybe. And maybe you believe that these revisions are some sham but they are specific to earnings and economic activity and the market is always going to reflect earnings, anticipated earnings, and interest rates.

On a positive note, the Feds posture should be very accomodating ; )

Of course, this all could be a conspiracy cooked up by hand-sanitizer companies!

Issues are real, but OP suggesting "entire economy" will be destroyed is just being silly.

There will be impacts and there will be recovery and we move on. A little Dow Jones "correction" every now and then is going to happen for some reason.

Guessing economic impacts will prompt faster and more responsible implementation of measures that will help all concerned, since I'm skeptical whether simple fears of people getting sick sometimes gets the priority it should, IMO.

inevitable to make this political in this climate but the Geneva car show was just cancelled as well as the Facebook developer conference among others. the WWDC may be cancelled as well. the olympics are in jeopardy as well. the market dropped 1100 points yesterday and another 700 so far today. every continent has been effected now apart from Antarctica. but hey who cares about facts. find another venue!!

Aside from this wonderful escape we call Golf is a real life problem.

This was mishandled and unappreciated for it's potential from the start.

Concentration here has to not whether a tournamnet will be cancelled but rather will we all be quarantined watching Golf Channel repeats at this point.

Hopefully we all don't fail to prepare like so many have already as failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Be safe and low scores to all of us?

My point is yes 2000'sh people have died. comparatively it is nothing. Thats all. 30K died last year from the normal flue. We are not to the point that world wide panic is needed. Thats all.

Not to mention that the validity of the mortality rate for corona virus currently is misleading. How many people had the virus and didn't hardly notice a thing? We have a much better understanding of the mortality rate of the common flu than we do this one. I wouldn't be surprised if the mortality rate is indeed very close to the same as the flu in reality.

Well let's see.

Epicentre in Wuhan should have been under more strict observation and movement control from the get go.

From realized onset and border control there was a reasonable amount of time to restrict movement.

Flights to and from the point of outbreak not monitored accordingly and passengers screened appropriately.

It's my 2 cents. Whether it makes no sense is of no concern at this time.

Hit your wedges close and keep your precautionary measures in your bag ?

Don’t forget about WHO and the UN saying that there was no need for travel restrictions against China. Sure, it won’t prevent the epidemic but modeling studies (that were done by WHO) show restrictions can significantly slow the epidemic. The UN says that such travel restrictions can hurt the global economy. I love how they’re only worried about the global economy when it fits their narrative.

This has been a massive overreaction. The fatality rate is always going to be overestimated initially because there is no way to know how many people are infected and have such mild infections that they don't seek care or even know they are infected. It will end up similar to influenza. During my career, I never went a winter without seeing a few children die of influenza. Ebola scared me more than this does. Now that is a nasty bad virus. And yes, I was a pediatric immunologist. Wash your hands.
