Iron Shafts - PX, Modus, etc.

I realize just getting fit would be ideal, but that’s not a possibility at the moment. Over the past few months I’ve tested both the PX 6.5’s and the Modus 120x’s in my irons. I really did not like project x at all, the butt stiffness just didn’t work for me and it felt like a chore to swing them. I like the modus 120’s, but they feel a little “light”/not solid to me. I guess my question is whether there is a shaft that falls somewhere between the two. I know this is all somewhat subjective but I’m just looking to get some input.

Maybe worth mentioning, I don’t think the 120’s are light because I had the 6.5’s first, I’ve been playing the 120’s for about 2 months and only had the 6.5’s for a couple weeks.

good question.. for me after using the modus 120x for a couple of years now, I am convinced they are great feeling but lack accuracy. I can't blame myself too much for that lol. My guess is a lot of the pros who use it have them very hardstepped etc.

The LZ is a very erratic shaft IMO. Worth watching Matt’s recent iron fit on TXG. Granted I had the LZ in 6.0 but oh my that thing could get wild. Modus 120x is much more stable IMO. The standard PX 6.5 is a beastly shaft in comparison. Much more stout. Best to do an outdoor fit if you can.

i've noticed you tend to have issues with a lot of golf heads and shafts. Your swing might be different. I did like the 6.0 LZ. it was very accurate for me. powerful

I get very consistent results with softer butt stiffer tip profiles. Modus, DG X100, SPB all work well for me. My fitter took me out of LZ and into the different profile dispersion halved

You can take a look at modus 120 TX if you want something a little heavier than 120x. I feel like the TX is also more accurate than 120x. The TX still has the great Nippon feel, while be heavier and qa little stiffer than the 120x. I am candidate for Project x 7.0 and DG x7, but I found the nippon to be just as stable as far as ball flight, but you can really go after it. Hope that makes sense and helps.

OP, wait till you can get fit. No point buying anything blind or getting advice from other golfers on here. Too many variables to lock things down! Love the Mizuno shaft optimizer to start with what it suggests. Helps narrow things down quicker than trial and error of numerous shafts!?

100 bucks for an iron fitting or 100's on different shafts until you find the right one? Takes about an hour.

 

I use KBS Tour 120 S or Modus3 120 X. Shaft is so dependent on how you swing though, not just how fast.

Spending lots of hard earned money, find the time! Nothing like having the wrong equipment after spending lots of $$$?!

They can be hard to find, but the Modus 120 TX could be a good fit. I played the 120X for a year, loved the feel, but agreed that they could get a bit loose. The TX is a different animal - super stable, but without sacrificing the famed Nippon feel and QC. I’d compare performance to a DG X100 but better/smoother feel.

During a fitting I was fit into 105x and 120x got basically the same numbers with both shafts, went 105x because it was lighter. Recently switched to 120x and took a good hour but so far like it better (could be since its a different clubhead tho). Have friends with PX LZ and much prefer modus. I have used KBS Tour in the past and like the modus so much more its not even close

I will agree TX plays similar to the X100. It would fall in between X100 and 6.5 to me. I find the comparison to be very similar but the Nippon is so smooth compared to Project x

6.5s are much stiffer than 120xs so there are tons of shafts that will fall in between. Try more shafts and then update the thread -- a PX 6.0 and X100.

Out of pure curiosity, what iron shaft(s) would fall in the category of butt soft, tip stiff?

What are people's thoughts on modus 105 saw at least one comment using them. Just blind bought a set with 105 stiffs coming from c taper lite stiff which felt too stout for me embarrassed to say.

I played the 105x I liked them a lot. Moved to the 120x and liked them more instantly but time will tell

No two iron shafts could be more different than the PX and Modus 120. Polar opposites. Modus 120 has a soft midsection, feels "smooth"/soft, requires a smooth load. PX has a firm midsection, feels firm (because it is), tolerates an aggressive transition. I would also argue that PX 6.5 is a full flex stiffer than Modus 120x (played both shafts extensively). Just about every other steel shaft will fall between these two. The nice thing about trying these two shafts out is that it give you an idea of which bend profile you prefer. If you like Modus 120, you may like PX LZ. If you like PX, you may like Modus 130 or C Taper. If you want something that falls in the middle, try Dynamic Gold or Modus 125/105.

This is pretty much exactly the info I was looking for. I absolutely hated the project x 6.5, but it was playable. I like the modus 120x but it just doesn’t “feel” as stable as I’d like through impact.

Was in the same boat as you. I gamed Px 6.5’s and love the performance but is was a bit low spin and work swinging that shaft. Switched to Px lz’s and swapped out the heads (apex mb raws to blueprints) and can’t be happier. Much smoother. Now a matter of testing golf balls and dialing everything in.

Update. I went and did a fitting. I was fit for the C-Taper Lite in X flex.
