Need some help to understand lie and length

Why would installing a longer shaft change the REAL lie angle of the club? They are saying it makes it play like it is more upright. Same thing as effective lie angle.

To use an extreme example: Imagine putting a driver length shaft into a 6-iron. There is no way you would be able to hit the ball squarely. At address the toe will be way up in the air...it plays more upright now, and would have to be bent flatter to allow you to hit it.

They don’t build you a more upright club if you have it built longer. That would make it worse.

I agree with you, haha. And I did before as well, it's just an easy thing to confuse via typing. But I guess the point is that if I order a 3* upright club and then go +1" on the shaft, the effective lie angle for me would be 5*, and not 3*. Ping makes it easier by saying no matter what length your club is, your effective lie angle is always true to the color dot of your club (as long as they are making it).

The swing weight is E3. My previous irons were E6, so I am used to it. +2-inches works for me and is what more than one fitter recommended. Anything less and it feels like I am squatting. In golf shoes I am 6'6".

I am playing today and also using the marker and I just got what I felt was a great solid contact 6 iron and this is how it looks.

And this one now that fly well but def no feeling pure

Unfortunately, being "used to it" is far from the same thing as being a good fit. I'm not saying it definitely is still a problem. It may be fine but it also may mean it's still causing some problems with the swing, just not as much as it was before you 'got used to it.' The fact that someone had to get used to something about an equipment change is more commonly an indication that something about the equipment wasn't' a good fit. How well or completely they can adjust can vary a lot from case to case and person to person.

Just something to think about. If you need the +2" at the short end of the set, that doesn't mean you need it for the longer clubs in the set, and it's the longer clubs where problems with the swing weight would have more of an adverse effect (if there are any). It's not something you'll likely find most "fitters" using, but here in the forum, quite a few people have had a lot of success using shorter 3/8" (or even 1/4") increments instead of 1/2" increments. The two main cases where that approach seems to help the most is when 1) situations where length needs and swing weight needs are conflicting with each other and 2) people want to try an MOI matched set of irons instead of the more traditional swing weight matching.

But regardless, it's very simple to test if the SW might still be part of the issues with those impact marks. Just get some foot powder spray and one of the longer clubs in the set, maybe the 6i, and see if choking up 1/2" improves the weight feel or makes it worse and also see what it does to the face impact location and consistency.

@Stuart_G That is a good observation as well as a suggestion Stuart. I have very lightweight graphite shafts, and I could put in a counter-weight at the butt end of the club, however that would increase the static weight. Short of removing some of the material from the iron head itself (as Howard suggested in another thread), there isn't much I can do. My current wedges are F2. I rarely take full swings with them. I am going to be getting new wedges, hopefully I can get the SW down a bit.
