Best Public Courses Near Newport, RI?

I'll be in Newport, RI for a week this September and am starting to scout out the courses nearby.

Any recommendations as far as public courses go? I'd be willing to drive up to an hour or so away, so the course doesn't have to be right in/around Newport.

Lake of Isles

Pinehills on the cape is also worth the drive.

Newport National is always in nice shape and is a pretty fun track. Montaup has some good holes and nice views of the bay if you don’t want to leave Aquidneck Island.

Meadowbrook and Newport National are at the head of the class when it comes to public golf. While Meadowbrook is the better course, it is close to an hour drive from Newport. Pinehills is well over an hour drive from Newport. I’d say play Newport National if you are staying on the east side of the bay; play Meadowbrook if you are on the west side (or on Jamestown island).

One thing to check out as you get closer to September is availability at some of the privates. Last year you could get on Agawam Hunt or Metacomet or Pawtucket. You may be able to do that this year as well.

Do you live here? You one of those that has to pack an overnight bag to go across the bay? ;)

To those not familiar with RI and directions.... we don't mention "MIles" to get anywhere. It's always based on the time it takes. Since there's this big body of water in the way from one side to the other side of the state, times can vary. Add in construction, and limited routes to various places, and time is a factor more than miles. I would still pick Meadow Brook over Newport National. But I would put Pinehills over any on the list. It's "about an hour" (just a little over).

Newport National: 17 Min

Meadow Brook: 40 Min

Lake of Isles: 1h 6m

Pinehills: 1h 18m

Agawam Hunt: 52 Min

Pawtucket: 56 Min

FYI - Pinehills is in Plymouth, not on the Cape - so at least you don't have to worry about bridge traffic! But seems a long drive from Newport
