The Open, or Wentworth PGA are very substantial crowds. Never heard a ‘mashed potato’ yet, and I get to one or other every year..

 

conversely, Augusta fans police themselves. Better class of customer. If the pga doesn’t care about the yobbery showcased for a worldwide audience week in week out.. up to them.

When I watch that video, sound of impact happens at same time as you see him hit the ball.

Went to the PGA at Wentworth last year. Absolute respect from the fans on an extremely wet day.

It was absolutely rammed with fans.

You just don't get the same nonsense from the crowds at tournaments in Europe.

All that 'mashed potato' or 'knock the white off it' nonsense. Lunacy. I am not sure they realise how pathetic they sound. Quite apart from the aggressive an inconsiderate behaviour.

On the speaking English subject, you see it a lot in MLB with the Japanese players that have come over. They speak pretty decent English often times, but prefer to do interviews with an interpreter. Being in the Seattle market, we saw it with Ichiro. Everyone in the clubhouse said he spoke English pretty well with them, but he wasn't comfortable using it in formal interviews. Could be a respect thing, with the Japanese anyway. They may feel that they would butcher the language and avoid the whole issue. Ichiro was so meticulous with his routine that he probably wouldn't speak English in an interview unless/until he felt he was proficient enough to do so.

As far as the sound/people yelling in the backswing thing. There are mics all over the place. Every green has at least 1. I have no doubt that the network uses sound from different mics while showing the video feed of someone teeing off. On one of those great shots that they show over and over again so we can hear the "roar" of the crowd, the camera shot showed a small smattering of people in the stands right there. There was no way that roar came from that small group of people. There were more empty seats than people. I bet they married sound from a couple different mics around the green complex.

Next thing you know they'll be borrowing piping in audio from other shows. Perhaps the sound of an intensive love making scene, while Im tries to make a tricky 6 footer for par.
