Maltby TS2

It is a very solid club. Has great feel. Fantastic out of the tee box and very reliable out of the rough. Will not tend to hook lile many of the hybrids today. For me the traditional iron style hybrid is the way to go. This one gets the job done. I use it at least 2-3 times a round.

It also has my preferred low trajectory. Near impossible to hit a balloon ball.

Mine is a 3. Above it I have the 4 Ke4 TC fw. Below it i have a TS-2 5 iron. Seems to fill the gap just right.

Also I have built 4 for other players and every one is still in play.

That describes my iron play perfectly. Unfortunately the type of iron triggers my mind to either swing easy (blade end of spectrum-lower bounce) or let it go (more GI type). It's a mental fear or worry of burying the leading edge early. I know the friendlier sole will allow me some margin of error and it frees me up much more.

@OrangeGravy the TS series soles are as friendly as a y sole out there. They call it a 4way sole grind. It like a V sole. Even it wet fairways it let's you get away with heavy contact.
I love playing the players blade style irons like the MMB but man,, I had better be in the right type of turf. They are great at a fancy country club where they glide through. The TS series, more so the TS-2, they allow you to be confident in any turf.

Question to the Maltbyites in the house. Anyone using Maltby wedges? If so, which ones?

Wanting to implement a new SW for this season. The Maltby lineup is a bit confusing, a number of options. However, the DBM models are apparently a non-starter. My spec is typically 2* up and that's beyond the recommended bending range. Plus, I prefer to hit some balls and observe before adjusting. The FGT doesn't have a 54* (or 58*). The backordered TSW appears to be my only option, but obviously no feedback yet. They do seem to match up aesthetically with the TS-1's I'm playing.

Have been using a Cleveland 56* RTX-3 for 1.5 seasons. Really good out of sand, not so much from everywhere else. Not all that enamored with the V-sole for non-sand shots. Plus, the stock "wedge" shaft now feels ponderous when transitioning from the significantly lighter weight graphites in the TS-1's. Been demoing OEM wedges over the winter and the apparent winner is the Cleveland CBX 2. A head type that is not in the GW lineup. Already have a suitable wedge shaft in inventory, waiting to be redeployed. So there is the cost savings factor (~ $100) with trying a Maltby wedge head. Furthermore, been looking to move away from "bladey" wedges.

The TSW seems to be more of the same. IDK, for $50 (head, ferrule, delivered), may be worth a try. And who knows when these may show up, thought I read they have been pushed back until April. Dislike making a choice in the blind. Played my first golf of the season the other day (9 holes), ready to make a move. Any commentary offered would be appreciated.

Have 3 and love them

50° M series + tour sole

54° M series + mid sole

60° MG Tour

Played a couple months last summer with the 50 and 54 and love the feel and control I get. Havnt played on course with the 60° yet but I can tell from inside play that it is going to be a keeper.

Hit alot of big box wedges at the big boxes and 2nd swing and I found nothing that compares in feel and value. You cant go wrong.

I'm not a huge fan of chrome so the DBM finish clubs really stood out to me for my irons and wedges, but I'm seriously considering buying a set of ts1 irons. The TS wegdes to match look to be equally as nice.

The M+ wedge series seem to have a seat for every behind. I have the M+ midsole after years of playing the MGTour or other similar OEMs I realized I needed more help in the sole.

I know the golfworks can bend the DBM head somewhat but maybe not to your usual 2°. The new TSW looks like a great option and that can be bent any way you like.

For the 50/wedge you can buy three for the cost of one Vokey or the equivalent. Kind of a no brainer.

As for the weight of the wedge shaft. I like to go about 10 grams heavier than the rest of my iron set. The standard wedge shafts are fairly stout and it can feel awkward coming from some of the lighter option iron sets.

M+ midsole, KBS wedge shaft which I believe is 125 g, 35 3/4", golf pride decade +4 standard grip. It comes in as a D8. I like a heavy wedge as I rarely take a full swing with one. But this shaft is heavier than I usually do. I had them left over and threw them together.

I have found the M+ to cover up my biggest fault which is to hit a wedge fat. With the extended sole it's been a huge change for my game.

Thanks guys for your wedge comments. Confirming my thoughts that the most viable option from GW is the TSW wedge. Bendability after the build and testing (DBM is a non-starter), 54* option, a modernist sole design. NTM, a significant cost savings compared to OEM. Especially since I already have a suitable shaft.

Popeye's comment about sole width caused further comparison. The M+ mid is listed as 1.05", TSW as 1.07" (56*). Ostensibly the same. But the TSW has the "Dual Sole Grind", and if I'm interrupting correctly, would offer enhanced versatility. There's also a significant head weight difference (308g v. 295g) between the two. A plus for swing weighting as I build to a 36.25" SW due to stature. Also, the bounce of the TSW (10*) is just about right for lusher course conditions I typically encountered.

The shaft weight thing is something I've really have been noticing of late. As a more seasoned golfer, increased sensitivity to shaft weight and by extension overall club weight. Stock wedge shafts in the usual suspects feel to heavy and ponderous for deft partial swing shots. The Cleveland wedge used currently is fine out of sand. But 95% of my SW usage is from non-sand lies. Where some finesse is required. And the heaviness in hand becomes problematic. The steel shaft that would be installed is ~95g, not quite a 10g increment from the TS-1's, but close enough. Currently in an older Maltby M-Series Forged 53* wedge. The shaft weight feels suitable in limited on course usage, the head I'm not enamored with.

What the heck, I've spent more than $50 on implements that didn't quite work out as anticipated. No brainer? Perhaps so. Although believe I'll wait until I see availability before ordering.

I have a couple Maltby Design 60* wedges, IIRC they were the largely same design as the current M-Series+, without the DBM treatment. I tend to like a lot of bounce, having had a surprising amount of success with a couple 14* bounce 58* wedges over the last couple of years. I'm moderately steep, it seems.

I went with the mid sole in both of my 60's, have liked them quite a bit. The wider sole has played well in the heavier sand conditions at my course, as well as the firm to soft conditions toggling that happens in an area with clay based soil. Not to much bounce when it's dry and firm, and enough bounce when it's wetter and soft.

May play quite a bit with a 56* or 58* as my highest loft wedge, depending on the sets I'm using; plan is for a fair bit of retro golf. In spite of having several older wedges in the 56* range, I'm giving serious thought to picking up a Maltby, either an M+ or the newer TSW. Would prefer the M+ as I like them on the heavy side, and while I go a bit overlength, I'm fortunate that I don't have to go as long as Brother Fellaheen. I'd also need a 65* lie, which they can apparently do with the M+.

Love the options available.

  • 1 month later...

Is this just the quarantine talking or should I get into trying out some Maltby irons?

Really like the PTMs and thinking about giving them a try. TS1 or TS2 would be next on the list to try. Coming from a Ping i210 but just like to mess around with different clubs

Read most of this thread and talked to a few people and thinking about giving them a try...........ugh hoing ways are taking over lol

The other day I tested a new Xcaliber Rapid Taper 95g iron shaft in a PTM 6 iron head. No one had ever hit that shaft yet. After three balls I dropped the club to make a phone call because I couldn't believe the level of feel I got with the set up. Breathtaking is about the only way I could describe it. Straight as an arrow. Highish flight and just a perfect feeling coming down and through the ball. Watch out for these when they become available.

The middle one is the 95 g.
