Verifying putter face alignment

Recently, I’ve been slightly obsessing over my putting. I want to work on making sure that the putter face is properly aimed at the target to the nth degree. I don’t want to shell out hundreds of dollars for an expensive laser. What did they use before we had lasers? What are some other methods and tricks that work?

Simple magnet with a pointer and a line on the ground

That seems like a great solution to get an accurate idea of what a square putter face looks like at address. A chalk line is an extension of the target line. Any ideas on how to DYI the magnet and pointer?

Should be able to find magnets at any hardware store and just cut the head off a nail and make the cut part smooth and flat

Thanks. I was able to cobble together a perfect no-cost solution from your comments in about 5 minutes of looking around the house. I found an old name tag with some small powerful magnets. I left the head on the nail. It should be square enough for my purposes. Perhaps I should patent this and go into full production asap. lol

Just curious if it is possible make a homemade laser aid.

I purchased a cheap laser from Home Depot. It worked fine but the laser was too weak. I just bit the bullet and purchased the Laser Optics v.lll from Wright Putting Dynamics. http://www.wrightputtingdynamics.com/laser-optics.html

A little pricey but should be worth the investment.

Go get fit for an Edel. $375 for a fully custom putter and you know you are dead on your line on those slick downhill 5 footers . Best money I have ever spent on golf equipment period. Seeing yourself aim wrong on their laser/mirror over and over with you current gamer is quite the eye opener and once you know you have the best alignment aid/s for your eyes it takes a lot of the guesswork out inside 10'. If you are perfect with your current putter they won't try to sell you one but odds are you are not. No affiliation with the company I just feel they have a great system that is ignored by 99% of golfers when it makes so much sense.

Was just reading from Edel's website. That looks like a very thorough fitting process they use. I'm definitely going to schedule an appointment next time I'm in Austin. Did you get your's at the Headquarters?
