Let the rusting begin!

While waiting to get my X-tour wedges shafted with a couple of Black Golds, I decided to run down to my favorite antique metal refinishing place and have them strip my formerly chrome 60° PM. After 20 or so minutes and a new found respect for commercial grade paint strip, here is the final product. :)

If you've played raw or unfinished clubs, there is a noticeable difference in feel once you hit something with a durable chrome finish. Even though Callaway puts a layer of nickel underneath, it still feels pretty harsh as compared to my vintage 54°.

What was the impact on the swing weight?

Go to local grocery store, buy large bottle of Coca Cola or pepsi, leave heads in overnight to soak, et voila, raw finish!! Worked perfectly on my old Mizuno Raw ox wedges.

2 things:

 

1. coke (or pepsi) won't do jack to remove chrome

 

and

 

2. if you were really looking save money, any generic cola will work ;-)

doesn't the cola just remove the rust? kinda like putting an old penny in ketchup for a few minutes and then it comes out shiny.

Quite noticeably softer....almost night and day! I cannot honestly say the spin was affected given the wedge is fairly new and the RPMs were exceptionally high even with the chrome finish.

D5 when I got it...D1.5 before I added a tip weight and a little tungsten powder.

All the wedges I had the chrome removed on wound up being heel heavy due to the amount of weight I needed to put back on the club to offset the amount chrome weighs. This lead to some shots going dead left---particularly out of the rough that tends to grab the hosel anyway. The best example of how much chrome adds to the overall weight are the forged CBs that the pros are playing for Cobra. They actually machine lead or tungsten plugs across the sole to spread the weight addition across the club.

Correct...vintage models are raw.

wont the wedge lose its grooves faster, because it is now softer, so it will lose its spin quicker

Groove wear is directly related to use amount and I'm UP to 1 round a month. But you are correct...the softer the metal, the easier it is to wear down.
