Tourstriker Planemate

Recommended Posts

I'm having the toughest time transitioning to full swings. When I slow down and do the protocols contact is crisp and rotation is good. I've been working with the full swing band lately and when I practice in my basement with foam balls I don't get tied up with the band and I don't shank.

As soon as I step outside or in a simulator I go back to all my old habits. I come over the top, get steep, and get stuck in transition. The results are awful---just awful.

I realize it will just take time but any tips or suggestions for helping me translate the protocols to my full swing? The only thing I can think of is to slow everything down...when I try a full swing it just feels like everything happens so fast as soon as I reach the top. I've captured myself on video and it's pretty clear to see the difference between the protocol swings and full swings. I have watched all of the advanced protocols as well.

Thanks,

I messed around with a friend's planemate and it's OK I suppose but I'm wondering if it is identifying a flaw or has the potential to ingrain bad habits. For me, the backswing was not much changed, no big deal. However, the band slackened as I rotated open on my downswing and approach impact due to my rt hip getting closer to the shaft and rt arm bent. To keep tension and "correct" this I would have to not rotate or press the club away from me/ straighten my rt arm which seems like a really bad set of compensations. Anyone else go slack at hip high approaching? Is this what is "supposed to happen? I think the band is slacking here when this gentleman reaches this position?2g9tlugt64nm.png

I finally got one. Ive done only day 1 and 2 protocols so far. But man has it helped already. It was definitely eye opening.

I know what you mean - you’re essentially doing what GG calls “no throws” - your arms are connected to your body as you rotate through the ball and you feel like a T-Rex and there’s no speed with it. Those drills can be good to break early release/flip habits so that you can turn through the shot, but eventually you have to “release” the club as you say. I’d suggest going back to protocol 1 in this case and work on the finishing form. Knowing where you are now, if you’re turning through properly, if you go back now and incorporate the finishing form, it should all make more sense.

So I've had one of these and been working with it for about a month now. And I can say with 100% certainty is has helped me make vast improvements with my swing.

I was already working on shallowing in my transition thanks to lessons with Monte and I'd give him more credit on that tip than I would this. But the thing it's helped me with the absolute most is turning through the swing. Which I always thought I ... well, did. But working through the protocols, I learned I didn't.

Do I think one can achieve those improvements without it? Of course. For some, maybe just watching the protocols and applying them with just a club-in-hand could be a tremendous help. But it really has helped with my turn through the ball. It's helped me think of the swing in a different way than I ever did previously. Like, I really understand the use of the hips and shoulders that is always talked about and I coulda sworn I was doing ... but I wasn't.

Definitely don't regret picking this up one bit.

Had one of those rounds where you feel like you are one physically and spiritually connected to your irons.

Been going hard on PlaneMate (also employing the wedge techniques from Gareth Raflewski) lately trying to really not be as flat so I can shallow the club and rotate better. I used to be super flat and let myself get back there when I let PlaneMate go idle for a month after doing so much to shake it the first time last October.

Still have issue with driver consistency, but when you have no fear you can get up and down from anywhere it’s truly liberating.

While the PM is easily the best “winter gains” training aid in existence, I’m learning you still have to find a way to lug it out to the range.

I’ve had the PM for 6 months now, and essentially had only been using it at the house the last month or so for rehearsal swings.

irons ball striking has become my main strength as of late, so much so that I was focusing on woods and short game to try and give myself a chance at a spring peak.

Out of nowhere I couldn’t find the bottom of my swing. Fat, thin, heel, toe, all over the map... two rounds in a row, with PM work at the house inbetween... but couldn’t figure it out!

So, back to the range with the PM actually hitting balls with it and instantly back to purina. Whew! Warmed up with it before a round (haven’t done that in quite awhile either) and went out and missed shooting a PB by a stroke.

It’s looking like I might be a lifelong user, but at least I have something to go back to and find my ideal feels. Might have to buy a few of these to keep on hand for the long haul!

This planemate while I still question whether its helping me (I already get way under plane) has been keeping my sanity during our "shelter in place"

Anybody in the Quad City area that has one and would be willing to loan out (for an appropriate fee of course)? Over the past 6-9 months, I have developed a really bad OTT transition. Done a lot of video taping and can see a lot of the issues, but really struggling to correct it and get the proper feel. Irons used to be my strength, but once I get anything bigger than an 8 iron in my hand, everything is becoming a hard fade/slice.

Recently starting focusing on feeling like I am dropping the club behind me in transition, which has helped some, but it seems like the Planemate would really help ingrain the proper movement pattern.

Definitely took me a good day or so to get used to the full band. You really have to work through the different positions and feels, from start to finish, with the long green band the same way that you do with the short band. I took a lot of three quarter swings to get the feeling, and continued to while taking full swings.

Such a great training aid. After several months of regular use I broke one of the metal clips and they sent out 3 beefier clips for me to swap out. I diligently went through all the protocols over and over again and its something I see myself using long-term. The face control and consistency gained is great. I'm still on the steep side of things on the way down and so getting a few degrees flatter along with a bit more side bend and opening the hips a bit more through impact are a long-term work in progress however the improvements made in 3 months have been awesome.

arms need to be in synch with pivot. People who use their arms out of synch with pivot can feel that the like their arms are fast - typically cause the pivot stalls to let the arms catchup. When the arms are in synch if you are used to the stall then the arms can feel “slow”. That p6 to p8 is where the speed is generated via a synched pivot and arms release.

here is a view of the difference between body stall and in synch pivot
