Tiger Mid-Swing Stops

I was watching some old Tiger highlights and every time he would stop his swing mid-downswing the announcers would go nuts and talk about how amazing a feat it was that he had stopped his swing. Is it just me or is this a little overblown? Is it really that amazing?

I think some of them were planned before the shot. Gamesmanship at its best.

He should learn to have better concentration and stay committed to the shot. He might have been a better player. As much as I like Tiger, I always felt that it was a little overly dramatic.

The only time I ever did something like that, I stopped myself from a display of anger (I was going to smack a tee marker) and stopped before I hit it. Bad choice. I tore a ligament in my thumb and missed 2 months of golf in mid-season. Learned my lesson.

try It. Intend to hit the ball and then stop coming down , it’s not that easy. Not without Just falling out of the shot so you miss the ball.

Given how much faster he is swinging than the average person, it is not easy. Looks painful actually.

It’s pretty easy if you plan to do it ahead of time. Not so easy to do suddenly in the moment

In almost all of those, you've got to be either uncertain of the shot or uncomfortable over the ball. Stopping has to be on your mind and at some point just after take-away, you decide it's all going to be bad. No way you can decide on the downswing.

Exactly what I said. Setup a test. 10 swings. During one of those swings someone blasts an air horn as you start down. You don’t know which swing. You have to try to stop on that one. That’s stilll more warning than tiger got. Hard to do.

Some of them are legit, like the Augusta bird flying by one. But most of them were either pre-planned for gamesmanship or he never felt comfortable during the takeaway on the upswing, but he still goes through the motion with a deceleration on the downswing. If he truly meant to stop at any point after the upswing, it would look like the Augusta bird video where he would have to still cross his swing path past the ball (and not hit it). The ones where the club actually stops on the downswing were preplanned or he knew as soon as he started the swing that something was off.

This guy gets it! This is exactly how I feel about it. Mainly it’s on the TV guys for acting like it was some incredible feat. It’s a little cringeworthy.

TW beat the living crap out of everyone. Won 7,8,9 tournaments a year. Other players were crying out there, they admitted that they were all playing for 2nd. And they were right, lol.

 

Stop his club for gamesmanship?

 

Ripping the hearts out of your opponents, stomping on them, and eating it while they watch.

I might be the biggest tiger fan alive I think it was more of I was just curious if the TV people were overreacting it just bugs me every time.

I think Tiger and Earl used to practice this while playing. Earl would try to distract him to work on his focus while they were paying.

I am not going to type here that it was easy but as a kid growing up in the Tiger era this was something that we would try to do and it was far from impossible. Now of course we were doing it when our friends were goofing around and not when some drunken bum was shouting “get in da hole” but it was easier to imitate Tiger that way than it was to hit it 320 yards down the fairway.

my buddies and I would do this in fun rounds, yell something obscene during each others back swing to play with distraction ...

 

I honestly think the funniest one was "ovaries" make no sense but was so random and funny to think of something funny/different/distracting after a while
