Average 150 Club?

Recommended Posts

I have Mizuno MP 67’s with DG X100 shafts and I have to step on a 9 to get it there, but I am in the market for new sticks so I tried out the MP 20HMB and I can’t confirm a 150 distance with them because I only hit a 7 iron and a 4 iron, but the 7 and 4 iron were both a full club longer than my Mp67’s.

I don’t play as much as I used to, and I’m getting older, so I was looking for something a bit more softer feeling than the DG X100 and a bit more forgiving. I hit the Mizuno Mp20 HMB with the Modus 120 shaft and they fit both my criteria. A full club longer with the 2 clubs I hit, so it’s all relative to swing speed, quality of strike and loft I suppose. Not all irons have the same loft to match the number on the club, even among companies

5 iron, but im working on my swing and flip to get it to a consistent 6 iron.

Then when i can hit it with a 7 iron, i am happy with my distances.

im 38, 6 feet. played basketball all my life. It has puzzled me my lack of distance other than just not ball striking properly. Ball goes straight as an arrow most of the time.

If it's a level lie and all carry, it's a smooth 35* 8 iron (TaylorMade 2017 M1 - Nippon 950GH stiff shaft).

Stock 150 at the flag would be my 46 degree Z765 pw. If I had to carry 150 I’d do a smooth 9 to get around 155/157 out of the club. Stock 9 is 163 at the moment.

It might be an 8 or choke down 6(with an open stance) - I recently realized almost all of the irons I had Golsmith make for me were 1/2 - 3/4 shorter than standard on ave. and I've fixed that but have as yet to take it on the course. I don't have access to a trackman either.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

If it is a calm day, level to the green and out of the fairway, either an 8 iron if the pin is towards the front, or a hard 9 iron if the pin is towards the back. We've had enough sun that the greens are fast again, but the rough hasn't dried out yet so long is dead. JPX-900F, about a club longer than my last set.
