Unsolicited, on course advice

I was a single and joined the young man for 5 holes. Then he went home. The 5 holes I played with him I went double, birdie, birdie, double, birdie. First time I ever broke 70 with a volatile 69. But the course rating is 61 which is -7 so it's not doing anything good for my estimated handicap. Not going to count any penalty strokes.

Hasn't happened to me in a while......until this morning.

I was on the chipping green at my club and was practicing chip shots from 30-35 ft, with all but 2 or 3 ending up inside a 2-foot radius....was feeling good with my distance control. Unsolicited, this older fella goes out of his way to come over and tell me that I just had to move the ball further back (I mean way back) in my stance. I looked at him and politely said that what I was doing seems to be working pretty well....but he was insistent that I alter my technique. So giving up, I just said, "Yes, sir. I'll give it a try."......and went back to what I was doing before. Not sure if I just enabled bad behavior, but I didn't have it in me to tell the guy to p*ss off.

I don't do it as a rule, but one day I was playing with a gal who was a terrible putter. After every bad putt, she would whine & complain & wonder (outloud) what was she doing wrong. Somewhere along the middle of the back nine I finally had heard enough & told her that her whole body, & especially her head, was moving with every single putt, and that she might try just holding her head STILL over the ball, & maybe the rest of her body would stay still also. Well, guess what, it worked (of course), it's pretty basic. So she was thrilled. Will she continue to do it, who knows. I really do not care to play with her, as she whines about every bad shot (& she's a 35 hdcp) so she hits a lot of bad shots. If someone asks for advice I try to give them very simple basic things, like watch the club hit the ball. That way nothing I tell them is bad for their game.

That's funny. After the round yesterday, one of buds who had been playing ok but came on strong at the end told me that he was trying to emulate my swing the last few holes and that's why he played better those holes. Something about compactness but I zoned him out and didn't want to hear any analysis of my swing. What it feels like to and what it looks like are two totally different things. And I don't want to think about it.

I only mention anything, to one buddy. He has asked me to key on on things like when he's rushing or off balance. Those are things I can see. I'm not attuned enough to offer swing advice. and no one should be dumb enough to want it from me

The only times I give advice are if I am asked by my one good buddy what he did wrong. I generally keep it simple.

And with my wife and my girls who are just getting into the game. None of them want to take a lesson and they are super athletic. I mimic my swing thought with them, I tell them 1 or 2 things to concentrate on and then I say “be an athlete”.

I really had to restrain myself yesterday from giving unsolicited advice. I played with a co worker and his swing was pretty bad. A few lessons though and I think he would get much better. He plays a couple of times a week so I assume we wants to get better, but I thought of this thread and said nothing...

Generally people comment my ball flight is too high, and yet I outdrive them by 70 yards. It's hilarious, and I've learned to ignore it.

As for me giving advice on course, no. There aren't quick fixes in golf, so it's pointless. And the average player isn't intelligent, and if I give them genuine advice, they'll shrug it off once something more glittery comes along. I stay away from poor players. I'll advise better players, because they listen. Anyone above 5 hdcp I just don't bother with.

I wanted to jump in with the obvious answer that you never do it and never should, but in reality with some of my very close golf friends we do do it on very rare occasions. Keep in mind these are guys we have played 1000+ rounds with and know very well and know their game inside and out and know when to speak and when to keep your mouth shut.

It is typically some thing like "that is not your usual chipping tempo" or it "looks like you are taking a peak on your putts".

And when I say "typically" we play 100 rounds a year together and it might happen 1-4 times per year. It is rare enough of an occurrence that I can actually recall times that it happen in the last 5 years. When make it partially memorable is the advice helped me when it came.

Most golfers, especially casual ones, still don't realize that high launch with low spin are the keys to distance.

I guess they're also not watching the bombers hitters on TV either. Or they just don't realize how high the pros, most of them anyway, are driving it now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

McIlroy hits it upwards of 124 feet apex with driver with his draw pattern, and I've seen him hit a fade with 143 feet apex. Mine doesn't go 320, it's just over 275 at most, and probably apexes at 95 feet. The average 220 yard drive is probably optimally at 70 feet apex, but I'm guessing on that. High launch low spin is also generally vauge, imo. The reason you hit up on driver is because when you speed up your swing, the spinrate increases. To counter it we use 9 degree drivers instead of 11, and hit more up. But it will always go higher the longer you are, and there's only so much you can do to get the backspin down.
