Best way to disinfect a new arrival?

I'm expecting a used rac ht 3iron in the next few days. In order to bring it in the house, I'll need to disinfect it, or the Mrs. will insist it stay outside for who knows how long. I want to use something on it that won't mess up the grip. Thanks, and I hope you're all staying safe and sane (well...let's start with safe).??

I'd say just wear gloves and scrub it with hot, soapy water from grip to head. Do it long enough to appease the Mrs. and you're good to go.

The Mrs. should know there's no reason to disinfect anything. It's a respiratory virus going around, not a bacteria... community transmission isn't a thing with this virus and you're not going to catch anything from a package.

If she insists, then douse the box with Lysol spray until she's happy enough to bring it inside.

From reports I've read, tests show the ability of the virus to last for 72-96 hours on a hard surface, like steel; shorter on more porous surfaces like a grip.

If it's been in transit for at least that long there should be no chance of infection.

That said it can't hurt to use a disinfectant on it.

I'd clean the grip, shaft and clubhead for sure with hot water and soap.

A heavy dose of soap and water on the shaft and club head. Rubbing alcohol to disinfect the grip.

Hot soapy water with a sponge (maybe a nail brush on the grip) should do the job, you could leave it out in the sun to dry too.

While you probably don't have much to worry about, community spread is 100% occurring in this outbreak. Please get good information.

The virus can also live on surfaces, just like flu and other viruses. That said, the VAST majority of transmission is through respiratory droplets... meaning you breath in what someone breathes/coughs/sneezes etc. out. It does NOT, however, appear to be "airborne" like measles (a virus) or tuberculosis (a bacterium) are. Those can hang in the air without much support from mucus/water aerosol droplets. Hence, the whole N95 mask hoarding is a bit absurd, as we only use those on actual "airborne" threats; which this (and all currently known) coronaviruses are not.

If you must (or your wife forces) you to disinfect, the BOX is probably more likely to have the virus on it than the item. It is handled by multiple people including your delivery driver. So maybe use gloves, unbox it outside, and toss the box in the trash. If you feel the need to disinfect beyond that, the metal surfaces are more likely to harbor live virus than the grip, but using a clorox wipe on the club would do the trick.

Coming from someone who will be a doctor in 1 month upon graduation from medical school... and our microbiology teacher gave a seminar on COVID-19 to us recently... she happens to have written and edited the most popular medical textbook on infectious disease and microbiology.

We have a whole box of latex gloves (related to something else), so I'll ditch the box and all the wrappers. Then, I'll probably give it a good dose of alcohol and leave it outside for a while. Normally, I'm pretty careless about this stuff, but I fit into three high risk groups (over 60, high blood pressure, and I've had lung cancer). Given how lucky I was with the cancer, it would truly suck to blow all that good fortune on a mess like this.

Makes sense to have concern, especially if you are high risk. Latex gloves are fine. Just toss them with the box after and wash up well. Keep your hands off your face until some soap and warm water.

If the virus were actually on a surface, you would have to touch it and then touch your face/nose/mouth to contract it. Alcohol (70% isopropanol or higher) will do the trick. No need to leave it outside after; the alcohol destroys the molecular integrity of the viral outer coating, but if it gives you piece of kind, go for it.

You don’t need a mask while cleaning, but if you feel like it would give you piece of mind, no need for an N95 as it’s not an airborne virus from what we understand.

‘I’ve seen estimates of 18-72hrs with infectivity on cardboard, maybe longer on steel or rubber, so those are the only concerns. Toss the box, it gets handled the most!

My replacement driver from CPO has taken a US tour thanks to UPS scr3wing up (TX to PA, then to Vegas, CA, back to PA should be here tomorrow).

 

100 balls on the driving range is the only cleaning it really needs, but with any used club I wipe them down, wash/replace the grip. Alcohol wipes, or my go to of CBC Brake Cleaner (good for getting goo off the shafts from stickers) does a nice job :D

I have been extremely fortunate to have been rotating in an NYC hospital when this all started. I saw and heard a shocking amount of rumor and misinformation; masks being hoarded; supplies taken home. Just fear.

My team ruled out roughly 10 patients with suspected COVID prior to my rotation’s end. Our first case arrived my last day, and I’m glad it was on another unit, less for myself and more for the fact I have older family at home.

We need to respect the issues and pull together. Good info is paramount.

It's done! Went through three pairs of gloves and two generous alcohol wipes.

I've been putting together a half bag of stuff new to me. I had gotten a rac ht 6iron and love it. From driver to lob wedge, I've got ten degrees between each club. Been playing with the rest and it's kind have rejuvenated my game. Now that my half set is complete, I'm very excited to play (if I could just get rid of this tickle in my throat).
