Can HS Boys beat LPGA Pros?

Recommended Posts

And this is the real answer to the question. The reason the LPGA professional will beat the high school boy more often than not is because the women's misses are a lot smaller and 3-jack is not in their vocabulary.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Yup. Their misses were all within 3 feet of the fairway and they almost always recovered. Nothing off the planet. No 3 jacks. People do not understand how good they are. They just look at the distance and think they would be unable to keep up. You just have to watch them play to realize how crazy that is

Man! Glad I made a cup of coffee to read through these comments. HH is in need of a serious reality check!

You guys crack me up. Really in denial. Nothing like a hacker that can't comprehend the best High School players are going to shoot well under par from 7000 yards. Put them on an easy LPGA set up, at the same yardages with a Par of 72, and they will all shoot 68 or better.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Re-read your discussion topic and then re-read your post I commented on. You're trying to change the goal post or are somewhat ambiguous. Any teenager is HS age, whether they're in HS or graduated. You posted the top 200 HS boy golfers. That's a bit different than a 17 or 18 year old collegiate golfer who's as old as a HS golfer. Even 19 could, in some instances, be considered HS age. Clarify your point instead of being so vague.

Way to resort to name calling when you're argument is no way defendable. The only way is to arrange a tournament with the top 200 ranked HS golfers in the US and have them play an LPGA touring pro. How many LPGA pros can we add? Everyone in the top 10, maybe the top 20? Excellent! Why don't you arrange such a tournament because unless you or someone does any comment is pure conjecture. Its opinion. Which means there is no factual basis, and comparing AJGA course statistics to LPGA tour course statistics is pure nonsense. Players are compared by score playing the same course and same conditions. Period.

I'm not sure what golf you play but Golf competition is based on a level playing field. Good luck proving your theory. And for the record maybe we're not the one in denial. Take the high road and show the board some respect for our opinion after all you asked the board for our opinion in the first place. Just because you don't like what most of us are saying doesn't mean you get to act out against anyone commenting. Just my 2 cents before this useless thread gets locked up.

I wonder if HH has ever attended an LPGA tournament. I have way back on the early 90s ('90 and '91) in Wilmington, DE. These were the LPGA golfers of Lopez, Alcott, Stacy, Sheehan, Bradley, King, Daniel, Mochrie (Pepper) ..... you know, the nobody touring pros. One thing I took from them was that they were really good, accurate and had decent short games and could putt. I played the course they played at The McDonald Championship (DuPont Country Club) several times. I played all the way back and could hit the ball farther but my best was even par (71) during non-tournament conditions. I was scratch at the time. The LPGA pros were posting -4, -5, -6. The LPGA touring pros today, just like the PGA touring pros, are light years ahead of their contemporaries back in the 80s and 90s. They're better all around and longer.

My point is unless someone watched the LPGA in tournament action how can they compare them to anyone? So HH, have you ever been to an LPGA tournament?

I may be wrong but I think the OP’s point is that (seemingly) every year or few years, there is a new HS age phenom that can WIN on the LPGA tour. This would never happen on the men’s tour. If the the best HS boy is typically better than the best HS girl, it stands to reason, that he might be good enough to beat LPGA players. Whether that’s on a consistent basis, I’m not sure but distance must play a role.

Your one post was a bit vague. Some of us read top 200 high school age golfers. That could be interpreted as anyone 14-18 (maybe 19 in rare cases)

Let's deal in some facts here. There is a specific LPGA player who has been reference here so let's use her as an example. In 2018 that player posted 16 rounds of 75 or higher with a few at 79. She played 95 tournament rounds. On a percentage basis, that means 16.8% of the time she shot 75 or higher. So is it possible that a high schooler or even a 4HDCP could beat her if they had their best day and she has a day when she shot 79, sure. It's possible. Am I going to Vegas and betting on the HS kid, no.

That is fine that you believe it, but don't give others a hard time because they don't.

Have you played golf with an LPGA professional? As I have said, I witnessed an LPGA professional play against accomplished adult golfers. It's not even close. At 14 I watched her take down an adult male +1 from the same tees. These girls are good.

ps: our club champion four years running played golf with us last year and he was shocked at how good she was. He said he thought he was good, but instead got quite the wake up call.

Well then, in that case.......I'll take Sean2's friend and you can take your son.

Pros are looking for stiff competition with this tournament hiatus.

Exactly. If you put the top HS aged boys in an LPGA tournament, I think the scores would look something like this ignoring the writing and axis. Some of the boys would beat some of the women. The mean score of the women would be less than the mean score of the boys. The worst woman would beat the worst boy. The best woman would beat the best boy. You can play around with how you think the distributions overlap.

I played 9 holes with a PGAer and another good stick a couple years ago in Monterey.

I got KP on a par 3 for an easy par, so that must mean if we played on a fully par 3 course - me as an 8 index would at least 1/2 the match and possibly win! I love this logic.
