10 Handicap and Up...What irons do you use? Blades, CBs, GIs?

10 handicap

Ive played the Nike VR Pro Combos forever but needed something more forgiving since I only play about once a week now. Back then I was about a 7.

just got fitted for the Ping I500’s.....I hit the T200’s, Cobra King Forged Tec and the P790. For me the I500’s were more forgiving and the top line was more to my liking. I hope this helps.

I haven't read through all these posts, but I have noticed that GI/SGI really doesn't help a player that much unless they stuggle with distance. I see plenty of guys in the 20+ range and most of the time the iron won't save the swing. If you need the extra launch/distance due to age, that makes sense. If you are younger and truly want to get better, get a players iron to learn how to play golf

It's probably considered one of the worst things for a newbie, beginner, or high handicap golfer to do and that is to use so-called players irons instead of game improvement irons. You have to be more exact on the clubface when you strike the ball and generally blade type irons are much smaller in size. For those who are 10 handicap or above I would never suggest using your players type irons, get irons that are easy to hit that have some offset in them as well.

My post was made after too many cocktails. While I do believe that a less forgiving iron can make you a better player, there is no reason not to use all the help you can get if you want it. I use a 4 hybrid instead of an 4 iron because it is easier to hit.

10 handicap. 35 y.o. 89 mph 6i.

Miura IC-401 4i, KBS TGI 95

Miura PP-9003 5-9i, Steelfiber i110-S

I moved to a larger iron; longer sole, taller toe. My ball striking is noticeably improved from a CB-1008 iron. I wanted a hollow body, foam filled 4i because I feel my swing speeds are not fast enough to get the spin I need on lower irons. I moved to a lighter shaft, and graphite, after a health episode and now back to full strength and very happy with Steelfiber. My bag will stay this way for a long time, I would assume.

I've been ranging between 11.1 and 12.5 lately. I play Titleist T100 irons (3 to pitching) with KBS Tour 120S shafts.

I upgraded to them this year from my old Titleist 755 irons (also in a 3 to pitching set) with the same shafts (as of a few years ago, anyway - I bought them new with DGS300's) which took me from a handicap of about 18 to about 6, and back to 11-ish.

11.4 Handicap. Playing Srixon z785s with modus 120s. Ball striking with my irons is one of the stronger points in my game and I believe they offer a decent amount of forgiveness for a players iron. I’m coming from playing MP64s which to me, we’re pretty much blades and didn’t help my game at all. The srixons will be in the bag for a long time, already been over a year!

I learned to play with blades as a kid back in the 1980s but didn’t have an official handicap until 10 years ago. After putting my 3 cards in I was given a handicap of 13 (I was playing Nike Split Cavities at the time). I hovered around 12 for a while purely because I was playing regularly, then I switched to MP4s after I found a set on close out. Dropped to 10 within a couple of months and have got to the brink of single figures a couple of times. Just bought the irons in my sig because my son, who has just taken up the game, has taken to my MP4s and he hits them far better than my back upset of Mac MT Pro C CBs.

My advice would be if you can hit MBs or players clubs reasonably, it’s worth sticking with them because you will become a far better ball striker with a more grooved swing. Mishits May ‘feel’ harsher but the end results won’t be that different to your GI irons. Just think about Spieth’s 8-iron AP2 into Rae’s Creek on the 12th at Augusta. No club is going to rescue a bad swing.

I am a 14 handicap golfer and when I look at the face of my clubs from irons to fairway woods to drivers I see somewhat of an inconsistent ball-striking ability. Some hits are on the center, some are very low, some are out towards the toe. Game improvement irons deal with that kind of ball striking better than blades do. It's just simple math. If someone is taking lessons starting to get better ball striking then I could see thinking about going to a more demanding club face, but someone like that is usually below a 10 handicap or so. Many golfers use blades just to get the feeling of being a better player when they actually aren't.

That ball-striking all over the face is not going to improve with GI clubs and they are perhaps a limitation someone achieving their full potential. If you need GI that’s fair enough and I would never tell anyone that they should play a particular type of club...it’s all personal choice at the end of the day and everyone should play what they feel comfortable with.

We all learned with blades back in the day and it did readily identify those that had inherent ability versus those that perhaps didn’t. GI does give those who would have given up in the olden days a chance to play.

Personally, I don't live in the past , and it doesn't matter what happened 30 40 years ago to me. Some people still enjoy persimmon Woods but I wouldn't recommend it to a 14 handicapped individual. Do you still use persimmon Woods? I doubt it because they are much harder to hit and would change a 14 handicap into a 20 handicap. The same philosophy can be used with irons when referring to blades and game improvement pieces. Used whatever you want but I would never recommend blades for a high handicapper.

I’m about a 10 and just moved into a mixed set of MP 20’s with the LZ 5.5 shaft. I struggle with elevation and I have immediately improved going into these irons. For me the traditional or weaker lofts have been very helpful paired with the slightly softer shaft. My whole set was bent to match the blades lofts that I play from 8-p.

Right here with you.

Hypothetical question:

If you are a higher handicapper and during a fitting, you pure the blades every time. They give you confidence and a good feeling at address and therefore you are hitting better shots. Should someone still go for GI or SGI, because off center hits are bound to happen?

that's the million dollar question so play what you enjoy and get used to them, a lot of us do not give clubs a longer chance to get used to and be comfortable with....

First fitting I went to back in 1996 (!) I wanted Ping Eye 2+...after hitting them consistently left and other similar GI clubs the same and on the brink of losing a sale, the pro put some Wilson Staff Progressives in my hand. Small player CBs 2-7 iron, blades from 8-SW (when you used to get 10 irons in a set) and I thought they were well out of my league. I was probably 18-20 handicap at the time. I ended up playing with them for 12 years and regret giving them away.

Currently at 13

switched to wishon 560mc’s

from maxfli revolution black dots

similar clubhead size, slightly longer blade length

both are low offset

560mc’s might be a bit more forgiving with a deeper cavity
