Hybrid instead of 3wood??????

Hybrids are the work of the devil and have no place in any golfers bag.

Man up and get yourself a 12 degree loft driver and use that off the deck.

In fact any wood in your bag higher than a 3 wood is an indication that you don't really play golf. You game. You are a gamer not a golfer.

Hybrids are to golf what asparagus and brussels sprouts are to vegetables. Ugly, disgusting, and the sign of a sick mind. You think they're healthy but in fact they are killing you.

I have never been able to hit a Hybrid. Never more than 2-3 feet above the ground if lucky Distance has always been iffy with hybrids. Sometimes I hit them far but most of the time, it's much shorter. Just switched back to my 13 degree 3 wood.(orlimar). Went from titleist 16 degree combo 3/4. Hit it usually better but way way shorter. Tried 3 Hybrid and 5 hybrid and neither worked well. 3 hybrid was worm burner with once in while up in air and 5 hybrid was about 5 iron length but 5I was further, higher, stopped better and overall consistency way better.

Tried tons of others with usually success of low screamers. Never anythiing very high at all. and all had tendency to duck hook since my basic shot is draw/hook/pull hook.

I did this 2 years ago, except replacing a Callaway 4w with Adams 2h, 3h. I'm a few yards shorter, 5-10 yds shorter, but much more accurate and consistent. I rarely hit the 2h from the fairway (only if PERFECT lie), and use broken tee to tee it at top of grass on the tee. It works much better for me.

dropped my 3 wood for a 17 degree adams super xtd hybrid. only played a few rounds and either club is not something i hit alot, but so far the results have been good. mostly just hitting from good lies as second shots on par 5s. give up some distance but is more accurate. safer play when you are generally laying up on par 5s. I am not completely committed to it yet, but I could see why the idea would benefit some people. short shaft is going to be easier to make solid contact.

Had a Mizuno CLK 16* lofted doen to 14*. Very good off the tee.....so I sold it. Hahahaha. Loving my Callayway Apex19 23* at the moment, and I've noticed they have a tour only 16*.........

Hybrids are the best thing since sliced bread. Drivers are too big to hit with reserve and woods are only good for the best of lies. Every bag should start with a 2 hybrid... Mine will once I break both my drivers and 3 wood ?.

My current ideal set: 2,4 and 6 hybrids; 7i, 9i, 50o, 60o and putter, all in a light carry bag..

I'm currently using an old 16* Tour Edge Exotics XCG with a Proforce V2 shaft. Its an oldie but goodie, with a titanium cup face etc. In real world play, it is absolutely as long as any 3-wood I have ever played (which are many, including various TEE fairways with similar technology). I know that with a perfect lie and perfect strike, I should get 10-15 more yards from a 3W with similar technology. But, on average, I just make better contact with the 41" hybrid than I do with a 42.5" or 43" fairway wood. This lets me swing hard, with confidence. Even if I am giving up 0.1 strokes per round by giving up that bit of yardage, I know I am gaining more than that back because the hybrid is easier to hit, and more versatile.

I really enjoy hitting hybrids and hit them more consistent then fairway woods or long irons. Once things get back to normal I'm going to try this. I rarely use a 3 wood and when I do only off the tee. The Callaway super hybrid has peaked my intrest.

Love it. 818 H2 turned down to 16* is a cannon! Despite the shorter heavier shaft it’s only about 5 yards less than my 3 wood since thanks to much much better spin reduction.

Moved into a Super Hybrid 17° (Cally) this year. Shafted with an old school 104g Hybrid Shaft and cut at 42 1/2" .....

My back and neck have been a bit iffy but I got to hit a few with it. Carrying it right on 260, finishing around 275.

The Fairway Wood is gone!

Interesting discussion. I played driver, then 17 degree hybrid for years (followed by 4 iron). Due to my ongoing ho’ing, I ended up with a 13.5 degree Callaway subzero 3 wood. Wanted more power from the fairway.

Cranked that puppy up and down, then found a brand new Muzuno s180 5 wood. Did a lot of fiddling around and now I play the 5 wood at 16 degrees and the 3 wood is in the garage. However, as soon as I can get to a driving range, I need to test a newer 16 or 17 degree with adjustable settings. I feel the hybrid was much more of a reliable go to club, both off the tee and from the fairway.

Will keep an eye on this thread.

For me, off the tee boxes modern 3-woods go nearly as far as a driver, so I figure why carry both a driver and 3-wood ?

From the ground anything less than a flat, ideal lie, modern 3-woods have too long a shaft and too large a head for reliable shot making.

The above reasons are I think why lots of players have opted to remove 3-woods from the bag in favor of 5-woods and, or, strong lofted hybrids.

Exactly. I don't play "less than driver" off a lot of Par 4 and 5 tees, but when I do, it's usually because I want LESS than driver. And the 2nd point is spot on as well.

I did literally the exact same thing. I replaced my 3 wood with the Adams super hybrid xtd at 17°. I got it for basically 2 shots a round or to use off the tee if driver is off or I want to do some different course management.

Yep. Although... I haven't carried a three wood for years because of the reasons Fairway14 and DaveGoodrich pointed out above. I haven't used a 5 wood for about the same amount of time.

I replaced the fairway woods with various species of hybrid, usually in a 2 or 3 iron loft, but they haven't been my favourite clubs to hit and I found myself using my 3 iron more often than not.

Earlier this year I ditched the hybrid for a U510 1 iron. It's a complete game-changer for me: it's so much more versatile than anything it's replaced or that it compliments. It's easy to hit straight or to move around a bit, I can get it up high or keep it down low, I can tee it up and bomb it if I need to (I had a 3 foot eagle putt on a 270 yard par 4 on one of my first outings with it), or I can tee it up and keep it way down if I need length off the tee into the wind.

I don't like/very much dislike the HZRDS Smoke shaft that it came with though (I don't know why I didn't spec it differently), and I think I'll get an EvenFlow White (do they make a hybrid version?) to match my driver. But I'm very, very happy with it and how it's plugged a distance gap while still giving me a ton of versatility.

I have!

My view on 3 woods is much the same as Fairway14 and DaveGoodrich above, and I haven’t carried one for many years. I haven’t used a 5 wood for a long time either - mostly because I don’t have space in the bag. I had replaced both traditional fairway woods with a few different species, including a 4 wood (meh) and various hybrids with 2 and 3 iron lofts. They’re good, but I’d still rather hit an iron.

So, earlier this year I bought a U510 1 iron. I made the mistake of ordering it with the HZRDS Smoke shaft, which I have never gotten along with very well in any form. That said, I love the club. It’s incredibly versatile: I can hit it off the deck - out of the rough or on the short stuff - or tee it up and bomb it. It’s easy to get up in the air and ride the breeze or keep low and run… and run. It’ll go left, or right, but it’s also easy to hit straight. On one of my first outings with it I eagled a 270 yard par 4 with a 3 foot putt - it was down wind but I wouldn’t have had a suitable club. A few holes later I hit it 200 yards off the tee on a par 3 into the same breeze. Kept it low (very low) and putted for birdie. I’m not good enough to get the same versatility from my 3 iron.

With the U510, I’ve plugged a distance and shotmaking gap. I’ll get a new shaft with it sooner or later - once I figure out what I want. Maybe the KBS prototype hybrid shaft. Dunno yet.

  • 3 months later...

Love my 3 wood but if I had a hybrid that went 250 the 3 wood will be gone.

3 wood 230 yds

17* h2 210 yds

4i SGI 185 yds

5i SGI 175 yds

I rather enjoy the 3 wood from the short tee and into par fives, hybrid sometimes reaches the par fives but that club has been such a revolving door for me since they fly soooo high. The ping seems to be better in the flat setting nice tight rope around 200 and rolls a few more, may actually move it back to standard since I don't actually hook my hybrids.
