Best Deep Face 3 Wood as a Tee Club

Looking to possibly pick up a deep faced 3 wood to mainly use off the tee. My driver has been on the fritz lately and I'm looking for a low lofted 3 wood with a deep face to take its spot until i can get it worked out. Just curious if anyone had any thoughts or recommendations.

Not sure it qualifies as deep faced, but I have a rbz 13* that I love off the tee. It can be a challenge for me to hit off some tight (meaning the grass is sparse) fairway lies, though.

Cleveland Classic XL 14* 3 Wood. Cheap experiment for you. Useful off the fairway too.

I still use a 15.5* one. Think it's a 2013MY club.

X Hot 3Deep is a good shout, but I wasn't good enough to get it working off the deck well enough.

Until a couple of weeks ago I would've said Taylormade RBZ or RBZ2 3WD. I have a buddy who had a similar situation and he tried a few models before discovering the Tour Edge Exotics CBX T3 13*. He bought one with a Hazardous Black 75 and all I can say is WOW! This thing is a low bullet hammer that hits stingers off the tee and is still serviceable off the deck.

I see a lot of people throwing out random clubs but more importantly, a good shaft would be ideal for a great 3 wood to tee off with. I played a proforce 96g stiff shaft in my 3 wood for a long time and loved it off the tee box. It was like a missle, nearly as long as my driver but super consistent and easy to keep in the fairway.

So consider a slightly heavier shaft (and lower trajectory) than you would "normally play" if looking for a great 3 wood off the tee box.

The Mizuno ST190 is pretty deep faced; great off the tee and the deck. If it's tee only, go with a Mini Driver.

Black Tie 7M3.1 is not a bad one (I don't get on with the Red Tie or White Tie).

 

I like these larger face and "larger head" tee fairways (185 cc) as they inspire more confidence off the tee.

I found the x2 hot 3deep to seem small enough that I wasn't as confident with it.

YMMV, but using it as a tee club, I don't worry much about off the deck performance (using mainly hybrids for off the deck shots).

Other key for me has been to cut down the fairways to 42.5-42.75 or so, and put some lead tape on the head to feel the head in the swing.

And like another poster said above, go up in shaft weight to 70 g range to maintain club balance at shorter length.

Interestingly enough, I also use the G410 LST 3 wood off the tee a lot but it certainly isn’t deep faced, could be the most shallow faced I’ve hit. Gotta tee her low but it WORKS!

yeah, I think with todays drivers a deep face is not really all the beneficial. They are all so good that you just lose playability but do not gain off the tee.

 

That being said, if you want something semi dedicated off the tee. Take a look at the Cobra big tour fairway. It is a little deeper and works well of the tee. It is a bit stronger lofted at 13.5 standard.

If you can find one, the Long Tom 2 wood circa 2012. Nice deep face. Although (as the name suggests) technically not a 3 wood it's a great club to mainly hit off the tee which is what I think you're looking for. I used it that way for a few months & to my surprise it was easy of the deck as well which surprised me again because the loft is 12.5 degrees. Off the tee it was nearly as long as my driver. Never seemed to get much love on this forum though.

The only negative is that it is driver length at 45" but for some reason it worked for me. It could be trimmed down but you would have to add swing weight back on. I think there was actually a port for hot melt if I recall correctly. Not sure why I quit playing it. Still have it because of the uniqueness of it I guess.

also consider using a 13.5* driver as a second driver. 43.5" shaft at 80-95 grams

A driver head will be almost double the size of a 3w in terms of cc, lots more room for operator error

And if you are crafty you can configure the second driver to work in the opposite direction of your "longer" driver

I bought a wishon 919THI in a high loft 14* for shorter nine on my league course.

Yes, the 460 cc head gives max forgiveness, especially when rolling from the office to the teebox for evening league.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I build to 42.5-43 for this driver with a 70'ish g shaft (Matrix 7M3 or Accra Tour Z ST 75 or Aldila Rogue Silver 70)

I played this game in the past. Callaway 3 Deep was the best I found at the time. I have hit some newer versions like the mini driver or Cobra's Speedzone big tour with decent results. But honestly, for me, nothing beat choking way up on the driver and swinging smooth. Bunt swing with the driver Sure its acceptable to be 30 yards shorter than playing partners with the 3 wood and with the driver its an ego check, but the bigger head is going to be more forgiving. Works great on off days, or on a particular hole where the fairway is tight. Doesnt waste a spot in the bag either with 2 clubs you cant hit off the deck.

The KZG RBT fairways were pretty deep, titanium, and they made a 13 degree. But you might also snag one of their drivers -- the PFT was 300cc and the RBT came in 325, 360, and 400, I think. They had 12 and 14 egree models. They pop up on EBay often enough -- might be able to snag one for $50 shipped or thereabouts. But another vote for the original Rapture, which was a lot of fun to hit.

I've found the SIM rocket 3w turned all the way down has worked exceptionally well. I paired it with a D+ 80x and I've seen 280yds+ off the tee... This club is phenomenal.
