Bunker rakes and you...

Recommended Posts

Lol. I’d venture a guess you either have very flat bunkers with no face. Or you are mistaken on the process. No in between. The outside faces of the traps must be raked. I don’t need to travel to know that. I have years at that job. If you don’t rake the faces , you leave ball marks and fat foot print “ caves” for balls to end up in. No bueno if an international flair is required.

the curved shaft doesn’t bother me . But also looks like a gimmick that will increase cost and give little to no help for a non existent issue. The vast majority of balls vs rakes issues I’ve had included the head of the rake. Usually due to a rake Half inside the trap . So if you move the rake the ball will move. I’d have no issue replacing worn out rakes with curved ones. But I wouldn’t vote to replace all at once just for the curve.

I certainly wasn't trying to defend the reasonableness of the "rake in the bunker" side of the issue. I was just pointing out an argument that I have heard.

I am staunchly an "out of the bunker" proponent. That argument carries more weight with me.

@Mr. Bean this is a pretty good video showing what I’m saying. They are using 2 guys to do the job. But in my experience most only use 1. Or 2 guy teams and 2 machines. Either way someone is hand raking.
Also notice from the still beginning pic . How long does the guys arm need to be to reach the ground ? 4/5 ft from shoulder to ground is my guess . So only way to get to ground From seated position is extreme Lateral bending . Extreme

This is what we do, apologies for state of bunker but this was taken on a frosty day.

The ball would only get trapped by the rake on the flat part of the bunker. We have had a bit of an education trying to get members to replace the bunkers as they found them, but it seems to work.

In Finland, where I am, where everyone walks with a pull cart, courses should just fasten rakes to the pull carts and off you go. Same for courses with carts, put a rake on the cart.

Now, doing the faces of the bunkers, yes recommended as often as possible, not required when there is need for speed. Sometimes we do just faces. Also, very hard to bend off the trike and grab a rake. Bent shaft or no bent shaft.

From a maintenance perspective, out of bunkers, because bunkers are done once every day/2 days, roughs are done weekly. If you ask nicely, the bunker guys will even put the rakes in the bunkers for the rough mowers on the day of the week the roughs are going to be done.

From a players perspective, I know about the ball leaning up against rake thing. On the other hand, I don't personally know anyone who has ever had it come up. It's very, very seldom. It's so seldom I would almost venture to say there wouldn't be a lot of harm in letting the player push the ball into the sand so it stays put were he to move the rake, or, gasp! let him play from wherever it comes to rest were he to drop/place it and see it move. Even if, (supergasp!) that spot were closer to the hole.

Lol don’t ever change Bean. Still running around starting fires. It’s hilarious to me that you are the pot calling me , the kettle , black. I can admit that , can you ?

I took a self imposed hiatus from this section for a couple months. It’s no shock to me that the same guy is still running about letting everyone know how wrong they are. Trouble Is. this subject doesn’t have anything to do with memorizing the rule book , or a fast google finger. It’s pretty simple common sense. So the only recourse is to then resort to some nonsensical personal attack. Which is pointless. I’ve had it all slung at me. Whoopie.

and for what ? You’re actually trying to argue that a sand pro operator can do their entire Job without leaving the seat . And the point of that is to somehow show me that rakes inside saves time ? Or that curved rakes somehow save time ? This to rebut my point which was that the only way to save any time outside of eliminating rakes is to have the rough mowers and trap rakers work together. By having each moving them once , instead of both moving them twice. It’s that simple. No need for the blown up tirades like “ glad you know it all and don’t want to learn “ . Nonsense. I took the curved rake info and “ learned it “ with no pushback. Lol. Doesn’t solve the issue though. It helps the issue of ball interference. But I never posted about that.

Fortunately our members are apparently more enlightened.

It has the added benefit of giving a defined place for the rake to be placed, eliminating the need from advice from the starter or notices etc.

if most members/players are that lazy then the question of where rakes should be is moot.

'the curved shaft doesn’t bother me . But also looks like a gimmick that will increase cost and give little to no help for a non existent issue.'

It is that bolded part that made me write what I wrote. You wrote that you had never seen a rake with a curved shaft. Then you wrote that a such a rake increases costs and give little to no help. How on earth can you tell as you have no experience on the issue whatsoever??

Isn't it astonishing that in some parts of the world certain things are used for the benefit of them and in other parts of the world people refuse to even try them because they believe their system is better? We used to have rakes with straight shafts for decades until someone realized a curved shaft stops only a fraction of the balls a straight shaft does (AND is easier to pick up). Well, I guess we are in the wrong here and you are just so much smarter. So be it. But I have no doubt that we will continue using those curved things.

Liking the other answers for outside.

Inside, it’s difficult to move the rake if the ball is resting on it with hard packed sand as after a rain. While outside, there’s a better chance it’s sitting on the grass and not leaning against the rake. I’d only base this statement upon a standard sized bunker that has a concave shape to it.

There are bunkers that are over an acre and a few stories high where it makes no difference anyway, but err on normal sized bunkers.

As far as I am aware in the UK rakes always go in the bunker, I found it strange in USA to actually put them in the bunker.

To me it makes way more sense to be in the bunker but I am conditioned that way.

Lol. Have you contacted your local sand pro operator for a video tutorial showing us the “ stay on the seat “ method?

let’s just agree that I don’t know anything about curved rakes , and you don’t know anything about maintaining a sand trap or mowing rough. Deal ?

I have never played a club in the UK that the rake has not been in the bunker.

Last year I played-

Royal Aberdeen

Cruden Bay

Trump Aberdeen

Turnberry

The Old Course

The New Course

Jubilee Course

The Dukes Course

Culter Golf Club

Deeside Golf Club

When I was in Houston golfing with my dad he commented how weird it was not putting the rakes in the bunker.

That is an impressive list of good links courses in Scotland.

However there are 550 more in Scotland, 1,872 courses in England, 145 in Wales and many, many fine courses in Northern Ireland and I can assure you that not all have rakes in bunkers. There are all the various ways of placing under rakes in these courses as there are in the rest of the world. The one exception is rakes on carts as I have never played or know of a ‘cart only’ course in the UK.

Fair enough!

yes I was lucky to play a lot of good courses last year - only got 35 rounds at Royal Aberdeen, least I have played there in years.
