I was stationed at Camp Pendleton and was looping at Torrey Pines on the weekends. My golfers teed off @ 7:00 and we finished by 11:30. I grabbed a burger and a beer from the grill for the half hour drive to where I was living near Tamarack Beach and saw Jack birdie #9. I made it to the house in time to see Jack tee off on 11 and I didn't miss a second of it after that. It was dramatic golf at it's finest.

I was on the cusp of my 5th birthday.

Skateboarding (16 yrs old). Pretty sure the only golfers I was aware of were Arnie from the Penzoil commercials and Lee Trevino. I'm sure I knew who Jack was, maybe. That was also probably around the first time I swung a golf club. I had one outing with the Boy Scouts and can still remember the first time I hit it flush that day. At some point my dad got me some 5 iron at a flea market I used to hit around the school yard. I can still picture hitting lasers across the field with that thing, no clue what it was. Oh, I also ripped a persimmon into my buddy's teeth on a backswing in his yard one day. It was flush as well.

The first tournament I ever watched, and which hooked me, was the Skins in 1993 or so on a Thanksgiving trip. Spent the whole weekend watching that thing.

I was at the tournament that day. When you are at the Masters on any Sunday the most exciting part of the final rounds are the types of cheers and watching the leaderboard. I have experienced this many times. The day that Jack won was unlike any other. The cheers were different that day. Watching Jack here and there that day and seeing the dramatic changes on the leaderboard were riveting to say the least. There was pure joy with the fans as this all unfolded. When Jack finally won Augusta exploded with cheers and excitement. That day remains my favorite day at Augusta. The icing on the cake for me was being behind the cabin that Jack was in watching on TV the final groups finish. When Norman missed his putt to tie on 18 Jack left this cabin to head over to Butler Cabin I happened to be there when he left. I can still see him coming out grinning ear to ear then I reached out and got to pat him on his back. I knew I had just witnessed history. It was just a really cool day!

I was almost the ripe old age of 11 and was probably heading to baseball practice. I used to laugh at my dad when he’s go play golf as he has those old school brogues with the giant lace protecting flap. But 86 is when I first started to be intrigued by golf as my dad would take me on occasion to the course. I was more intrigued by driving the cart then but Something about the sound of those metal spikes was magical then....even in those fugly shoes.

If I remember correctly, Dan Jenkins wrote they article and his lead was something about “the arm”. It being one of the scoreboard operators pumping his arm at the top of the board. Something like that. I think I still have it as well, I’ll have to go look.

I had just gotten married two weekends prior and we were back in our hometown for the weekend, and getting ready to head back to college. There was a winter storm predicted for our area and we had a five hour drive back to school. I wouldn’t leave until it finished and my father in law was getting madder by the minute that we weren’t getting on the road.

Masters Sunday in '86 April 13th was my 14th birthday and I can tell you for sure I was not watching golf but, my dad probably was.

I was a kid in southern California, spending all day every day riding my bike all over town because my mom didn't want me in the house.

Bored and channel surfing and came across Jack battling Seve Tom and Greg. I wasn’t a golfer yet but after the ‘86 Masters, I was hooked for life. Now 59 and a 7 hdp and loving yhe game more than ever because FINALLY!!! Swing nirvana. It only took 34 years.

This is strange because just yesterday I was wanted to post this 12 second video of Jack's swing on the 13th hole in 1986.

Didn't start playing till 1987...there was a nine-hole course (college) right outside our housing that cost a whopping 50 cents to play for students.  My roommate was a real golfer (dad belonged to Connecticut Golf Club...underrated, and really difficult, hidden gem), borrowed a set and would play almost every day.

 

I can only recall a couple golf telecasts prior to that year...I recall the 84 Open at WF, and the 86 Open at Shinnecock and PGA...Norman was involved in all of them...and not in a good way!  I missed the 1986 Masters...can't recall why...I was probably golfing or drinking!

New to this thread and only read the last page...when I saw the thread title I thought it was about Norman, not Jack.  I was in the last year of my 20’s and just really getting into golf. Joined my first club in ‘87. I had watched a lot of golf as a kid but by 1986 the new guard of pros had taken over except in this little get together in April.

I'd imagine I was crashing around the house like a small little drunk man while my Dad watched Jack do his thing on the TV.  Wish I could be living the golf years I am now back then, though.  The game sure seems like it was a lot more interesting then than it is now.

I was on the bridge of the US navy ship I was stationed on. Luckly we were in port at the time. Watched with the QMC on a 19 inch TV with a coathanger for a antenna. Greatest few hours of TV in my life, was a Norman fan a little but when he hit it right on 18 everyone watching yelled like crazy.
