To be beloved or respected?

The classic Arnie v Jack argument, which I'm sure has been done to death on this forum. But in golf, or your career or whatever category you chose to apply to:

Is it better to be the most beloved or the best?

It’s not a classic Arnold vs. Jack argument, that has never been an argument, unless you think people ever failed in any sense to respect Arnold Palmer (which is stupid). Jack taking longer to be more of a perceived fan favorite in some ways, maybe. Respect for either? Come on.

Edit: the rest just isn't that important. Let's try a little harder and not insult either of the icons of the game just to have another "topic".

Usually if you are loved, you are respected too. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

I'm using those two as an example. Arnold was clearly the most beloved golfer ever and Jack was the better player. No one is saying Arnold wasn't respected. I remember during Arnold's funeral Jack saying: 'everyone loved Arnold more than us and we all knew it.'

Once again publish the "take" and change the goalposts. You used the word "respect" in juxtaposition.

Now it's "beloved vs. better player"? There is NEVER any argument about Jack's on course record vs. Arnold and never has been on here. Folks here, like most knowledgeable golf and sports fans respect and appreciate both of their accomplishments on and off the course - this isn't 1962.

They both smoked so we know you would consider them "riff raff" and want them out of the way on your executive 9.

Shoot Hawk back in our growing up days everyone smoked or at least everyone I was around did. I never did but dip and chew to this very day. Now I do enjoy a cigar on the course from time to time. And just like in a few minutes I will be on the patio on my new course with a cigar and coffee and hand watching the sun come up. Yep unfiltered Camels and Chesterfields go right along with Persimmon woods, blades and ----- real metal spikes clanging on the cart paths------ Actually I liked a lot of the early stars growing up---- The 1986 Masters the last round was hard for me because I liked both Jack and Seve

That being said(hahaha, you know me, I always gotta say somethin?), I have no qualms about contributing THE GREATEST pic that this thread will ever see(please remember that it is not bragging if it’s true, it’s merely stating fact?), and I would also put forward that if we were to do a mutually exclusive/either-or comparison, these two Gents would be a much better choice??

I’d normally say “respected,” IF they were mutually exclusive, however in this case, man-love? wins out.
