Stroke Lab Users - Distance Control?

Recommended Posts

I have a Double Wide with about 6 rounds on it. It works very well from ~10 feet and in. Outside of 20 feet though is pretty much a crap shoot. The heavy feel just removes too much of the subtlety of response, and most shots end up short, since have little feel for distance.

Do you have any of this difficulty? Is this something that you can effectively adapt to over time?

I have about 6 rounds with my #1 and have not putted better on a variety of greens and green speeds. The only greens I am really having trouble are those here in Central Ohio that haven't been rolled or mowed - very shaggy and bumpy. And I'm not really concerned about those - yet.

So i just got a tripletrack10 to use without the ttball because i dont use lines anyway. This also has the new microhinge star insert. Harsher then the previous strokelab insert in a good way however, it still feels deadish imo. I played yesterday for first time. The greens werent the best. Had grass on them but very bumpy. Ball would hop 6 7 times going to the hole and also slow greens from wettness. A few times i thought i experienced what your saying about longer putts but its too hard to say given the greens i was on. Im typically a pretty good putter so we shall see. This april should be able to tell.

I have owned at least 2 Spider putters and they were so close to being right. Only long putts were a problem due to the insert. If I played on faster greens they would have been perfect. What's the opinion on the triple track 10 s as far as a firm face vs the Spider or Spider X? I love my blade putters but I certainly could use the advanced aiming options.

I am in complete agreement with you about the Spider X. Nothing feels more right than the X, but when I went to a course with slowish greens, I could NOT get the ball to the hole.

I have the Stroke Lab 7, and it is really working well for me at this point from all distances. I have found it easy to get the feel for distance, but that could change in the next 5 minutes :-).

I played with a stranger a week or two ago who had just picked up the triple track 10 the day of the tournament. I swear he made everything he looked at until the 17th hole. He definitely had no problem from any range that day. FWIW, I tried one at a local shop and did not like the feel compared to the X.

That is want I was afraid of hearing. For some reason many don't like the feel of the triple track. On very long putts I have even seen pros come up short with the X. I wish it was just a little more firm. Back to looking at mallets from everyone.

I did have a stroke lab shaft and I changed it to a Putter Lounge PVD TT shaft. I am not sold on a part metal, part graphite shafts.

  • 3 weeks later...

I had a triple track 10 for a week and returned it for a spider x. If you think putting from distance with spider x is difficult.. which i dont, ive putted really well from long distance on slow greens with it. Leaving it 2 3 4 5 feet away... triple 10 i was coming up sooo short on slow greens. A 25 ft putt id get stuck with a 12 footer. Opposite was true for short putts. It would over hit them by 2 3 feet. Terrible distance control. Switched to spider x and all problems have gone away. What a difference. The distance controll, feel, alignment are phenomenal. Well worth the price if you can afford imo. Everybody prefers theyre own feel though becuase we're all different.

Instead of dropping it immediately, I continued to play the Stroke Lab to see how well I might adapt.

I believe -

There are two general tendencies/methods to create putter head speed.

One is that you take the club back, then accelerate it similarly to how you approach a chip shot, which is to accelerate through impact. In this case you’re putting the ball further by accelerating more.

The other is the idea of taking the club back further to hit further. ‘Take back equals follow through’ is the standard saying.

The heavier and/or higher swing weight putter naturally resist acceleration. Those who are used to lighter blade models (original Anser in my case) are likely going to have more difficulty achieving distance control, and have more putts come up short. Those who have longer strokes, or already play mallets and heavier units, may find the balance and weight intuitive.

You "had me" until this "A 25 ft putt id get stuck with a 12 footer".

NO combination of putter and ball can cause that. That my friend is you. But you already know that. LOL

But a lot of what you say I've found to be true.

I've been putting in the store with the Spider-X pretty much since it came out and finally pulled the trigger about 3 months ago. Shortly thereafter found myself really liking the #7 Stroke Lab. So I bought one of those as well and have used them both over my last 10 rounds.

In order of softest (and therefore shortest) to firmest FACE, AFAICT, is "10" Stroke Lab, Spider-X, '19 #7 SL.

However, I've found that the most consistent of the 3 distance-wise is the Spider-X.

I have myself finding that I tend to like the #7 SL slightly more than the Spider-X and find it does get to the hole a little more often than the Spider. Accuracy and feel are so close it's a toss up.

More testing to be done,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if I ever get to play again,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I knew someone would say that lol. This would be true if i wasnt as good of a putter as i am... not trying to sound cocky. At what point is the truth just the truth and not cockyness? Lol... i rarely rarley leave putts that short unless i am putting with something my feel doesnt like and the 10 although not bad just wasnt like the spider x at all to me. The spider x rolls true. What you put in is what you get from it. Is it no wonder rory dj rahm day and more use this thing. Im very sure others would be using if not for brand deals. I will say this though. Every company has a putter that can easily go in my bag. I love odyseey ive only played odyssey up untill now. I have a o works r line and wow what a putter that is as well. The spider x hits all the marks for me though.
