My first custom Byron -- order placed 6/30/2016

Soft dish detergent and soft rag. Humidity changes the finish, and none end up the same. It's actually a patina, not rust, as best I can tell.

Did you have the blue oil put on a satin (bead blasted) stainless putter? The blue oil looks different depending on the underlying state of the stainless steel. I had it on a satin GS DH89 and the colors never really popped. I also got little dark spots (looked like rust) that were a by-product of the heating process, per Byron.

 

no, it was matte finish, not bead blasted on the top. high polish on neck/sole/face.

The blue oil finish changes over time and with usage. I had a longneck blue oil that I was the 2nd or 3rd owner of and it had the discoloration you speak of. There's plenty of talk on Puttertalk in the Byron section about this finish changing over time, and quickly, and how it can be "brought back" a little bit, but for the most part it will fade.

It has a patina to it now. The blues are still there, but it's not really blue any longer.

it's just not what I ordered. I tried to make it work but every time I used it, looked at it or thought about it, I pissed me off it's not what I wanted.

lol well - i ordered a trisole and got a rounded sole. eddie even agreed with me after sending him pics that it wasn't a trisole at all. also, the whole finish thing has made me do personal work of my own - polishing the neck to all silver, polishing the sole and re-doing the finish.

 

also, despite supplying pictures for the milling, apparently what i was clarifying was one milling was actually another, and didn't get the milling i wanted, even though the milling is incredible on this putter.

I've enjoyed reading about your roller coaster ride of an experience. If you have the means to keep the putter, I would like to see you hold onto it for a while before you sell it. Unless you're just trying to hype it up for a sale, it sounds like you really love how this putter plays and the part that you hate is that it's a custom putter that didn't arrive to your exact specifications. Maybe this is a case of getting what you needed instead of what you wanted? Just would hate to see you sell it and regret it. However, I can understand why you would want to sell now, especially with the gift giving season nearly upon us.

Shades -- in all honesty it's not about hype. it really is one of the top 3 putters I've ever had in terms of performance. there's just something about knowing that it's not what I wanted that is driving me crazy. yes, it's beautiful and I get a ton of compliments on it...and I putt very well with it; but if I hold onto it, it'll just keep grindin my gears.

 

not only the fact above but, you're also right -- I could use some cash for Christmas.

I know this feeling. I don't mind it when things are random chance (had this with ordering a car recently and it all worked out) but when things are completely custom and supposed to be that way it's really hard. I read through this thread and quite frankly, your experience is why I like to have others do the work and then buy the putter once I can see it. I have never been artistic and able to accurately describe what I'm trying to do so it feels like I would run in to the exact same stuff you did.

I have a backup TEI3 newport longneck that is never going anywhere -- but the gamer right now is my custom slighter notchback (have a thread on that one too). greens are slowing this time of year so, no need for a deep mill. I like using deep mills when greens are ice, and firmer feeling, less milled putters when greens are slow.

 

don't know why there are so few but, after talking to Slighter, Byron, Lajosi, Machine, Xenon -- they're out there if you a) have the funds to pay for a custom option if it's not available, b) ask nicely c) they're not too busy.

I think that Byron you had made looks fantastic. The two tone long neck and finish look great.

 

I think there are a few types of people. 1) for the price of a custom, this better be exactly what I ordered. 2) I'm getting a custom that will be unique. The two tone neck is a beauty mark.

 

I'm the latter. I've had customs not go 100% as planned but that's what makes them unique. It's still a 1/1 made for me.

 

All that being said...I can see how a long, drawn out process can put a bad taste in your mouth. I totally undeestand why you can feel that way.

I'll preface this by saying I LOVE Byon putters...Love them.

 

That being said, I can understand the OP's pain. You're dropping a lot of coin, and as this thread indicates, the OP put a lot of time and thought into what he wanted. If it's a finish issue, particularly if it's with the blue oil, that someone's unhappy with...well, that's a crapshoot, and you get what you get. However, a rounded sole when a tri-sole was ordered? That's a big mixup, and something I feel would make the putter play entirely differently.

 

One of the reasons Byron putters are so in demand is the craftsmanship, and personally, I've had great dealings with him in the past. But the level of communication is not the same as, say, Tom Slighter (who I swear does not sleep). Likely a personal style choice, and not a knock on Byron, but when there's a discrepancy between the order and the final product as big as the sole issue referenced herein, then there is a problem.
