Except that the majority of the field could be confirmed:-

Previous Champions;Winners of selected tournaments going back a certain number of years - The Open (10 yers), The Masters, US Open and PGA (5 years), The Players and BMW PGA (3 Years), Argentina Open, Japan Open, Diamond Cup (whatever that is) and the Senior Open (1 year)Top 10 and ties from last year.Top 50 in the OWGR as of Week 21 (the OWGR is currently paused and is likely to be for a good little while yet).Top 30 from the previous season Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup, Top 2 from Japanese Tour and the winner of the Australasian and Sunshine Tours.Top 5 on the Euro and PGA Tour (within the Top 20 if not already exempt).Selected Amateur Champs so long as they are still AM’s.These guys have all already qualified. That’s not an invitational event. There is no one on that list that has been invited, they have earned their spot and I would be more than happy to watch a field of these guys compete.

I hope they set the example for the USGA, and that the USGA then influences Fred Ridely (former USGA Amateur Champion and President) as the Chairman of ANGC.

Hahahahahaha - I'm so dumb. I have said previously they'd stick with St. Andrews next year because it's the 150th if they cancelled.

Of course, the next one will still be the 149th, lol, and with St. Andrews in 2022 it will be the 150th.

Duh.

I'm sorry for anyone who was hoping to see The Open contested, especially in person, and I sure was hoping to be up all night as usual watching this year, but purely selfish for me that it is much more likely I can make the trip for the 150th in 2022 vs. 2021. And we were seriously considering next year.

While I'm sad that this year's Open Championship has been canceled, I'm excited that next year will still feature Royal St. Georges. It's a great venue that is always enjoyable as a viewed. But even more important - that region will still benefit from the revenues generated during the Open, albeit a year later than normal. Probably the best decision all-around - canceling this year, but then still sticking with RSG in 2021 before returning to the Old Course for the 150th in 2022.

To be fair Hawk, I was in the same boat with that line of thinking that somehow next year was still the 150th. Once I saw the announcement, it all kind of clicked and became a "duh" moment for me.

I'm with you, being able to go in 2022 is more likely for me, as well, than it is in 2021, especially as we move out of the current situation.

Rather sad that The Open bites the bullet but all three US majors are still going ahead. Did the US offer the R&A a sweetener? Just hope the European Tour appears in some form before the summer ends.

Just 4 days ago they insisted it wasn't cancelled. Smart move to cancel for the year. Things should be safe by summer 2021.

Would have been nice to see this moved to a later date rather than cancelled. Whatever. Everything is cancelled anyhow, new normal.

The Open's insurance policy requires a cancellation by a certain date for those of you thinking this is out of the morality of the RA v USGA

I wonder if the insurance coverage includes any venue guaranteed payouts. Would certainly be good if some of the coverage could help out the course as it's going to be hurt by this initial closure and won't see any help from the championship until next year.Someone else stated that earlier in the thread, it hasn't been lost on everyone.

A partially closed Open is not an Open. ‘Tis the right decision. In reality the same problem with the PGA and US Open. Qualifying would be way off of normal. The qualifying for the Masters on the other hand was well decided..........

I’ll wager that the only major put on this year if any will be the Masters.
