Handicaps 10 - 18 - What type of irons are you playing?

Just curious what the majority of mid-handicap golfers are playing in terms of golf irons. Do you gravitate towards players, distance, game improvement or super game improvement.

I know the lines between the types of golf irons has kind of blurred and in my particular case, I play what you would probably consider distance irons (Callaway Apex CF19's), but I probably should be looking at some game improvement because of my age (72). How about you?

I was playing i15s that came from a much better players bag. Played them a for a few years and got OK with them but I wanted the switch. I have a weird attack angle and slower swing speed so I was in need of some distance. I really fell for the Haywoods and was ready to buy. I emailed them and they told me I should compare to the G410s or G700s for my fitting. I tried both and just couldn't. Something about them was off and I couldn't get a clean shot off of them. The fitter was trying to find a way to meet the online stats but they weren't working. I tried the 210's and they hit very well. We adjusted the shaft into a Ctaper for better results. Then I hit the i500s for same grouping, but now a full club longer. Saved that idea and dabbled with a few other clubs outside of the Ping family but nothing produced the numbers the i500s did. So that's what I walked out with. A Players Distance iron.

 

My only disappointment was that I didn't look at the Sub70 699s first. Also Haywood is releasing a less offset more compact version of their current line up. I got 4 rounds in on grass with the i500s and I'm down a full HCP point. I also have the chance to play a lot of virtual courses. Not the same, I know, but they've done me quite well.

Was playing a hybrid set of JPX-825 Pro 4-7 and MP-54 8-PW. Went to a full set of MP-54 in December.

My miss is left, bordering on a hook. GI irons have too much offset for me, and I like knowing when I missed the sweet spot.

Sending the JPX-825 Pros up north to reside with family, so I have a set up there and don't have to travel with my clubs.

I used to play players everything but I've learned to just play what makes the game easier. Currently playing 919 HM's.

Right now it's a set of Cobra Amp Cells (~2013 GI) but I am in the process of upgrading. Need more spin on the ball, as I'm way below the desired range for spin metrics mainly. Pro thinks I could pick up some distance with improvement there. Driver too.

Coming from Cobra Tour Forged and just ordered a set of PXG 0211's. I tend to like a little bit more of a players iron than game improvement. Ball striking of the irons is better than my handicap would lead you to believe - let please not talk about my short game and putting...

I have gone from 6 to 11. I probably spend 10 times more time hitting irons than I do on my short game, so my iron (and driver) striking is pretty good. I play Titleist T100's, 3 iron to pitching wedge. I also have a Titleist U510 1 iron, which I really like.

I have been thinking about my game and as soon as I'm allowed to, I'll try to make that a 50/50 balance. The main trouble is that the practice facilities at my club are pretty crappy and the driving range is the best part.

I’m playing Z765 currently. Played AP2 for a while before but really love the way the Srixon cuts spin and cuts through the turf. Irons are my strength of my game.

Actually, it’s a toss up and could be either the PING g410 dg105 stiff vs Callaway Apex CF19 $-taper 125 stiff soft stepped.

I’m still hanging on to my PING g25 DG XP s300 and Adams Pro Gold with steelfiber i95 stiff.

Just got a set of Cobra Forged Tec players distance irons and so far I really like them. I came from hitting Callaway Razr X MB’s or a set of MP-54’s that I still hit well when I swing well, but needed the extra distance with a bit slower swing speeds as I get older.

13 hi. Played Cobra F9s last year (without a fitting). Nice clubs---long, fairly accurate. But trajectory was very low. Was just fitted for Callaway Mavriks---longer, straighter, higher on the launch monitor. Looking forward to them in the event the we ever get back to golf.
