Jordan Spieth vs Padrig Harrington

I think the only these two guys have in common is they both won three majors. They almost belong to different eras and they played together for a very short period of time. Paddy is way smarter than the rest of the field, and Jordan is one of the most talented players ever so not even the way they play can compare. Anyway, an interesting comparison in times of lockdown.

Jordan is not done yet. He still putts great but his weakness has always been off the tee. Isn’t this part of the game that is giving him fits but more so that last couple years?

Harrington to me i think of almost as either a Vijay-lite , or a suped-up Mike Weir....in that he had a nice long career with a hot streak sandwiched in there that kind of stands out as an outlier.

Spieth's hot streak could end up being basically his entire career (obviously TBD at this point)

I hope this time off will help him. His downturn started after he got mono and I wonder if he ever fully recovered. Now, he can get a lot of rest and eat good and work on his game without the travel rigors and the pressure.

The thing about majors is each ones a huge accomplishment.

Just winning one is great, two is better, so is three, so is four.

I think too much is compared to Tiger and Phil, having to have a decades long career, when really, other greats of the game had similar short windows of greatness, like a Seve or Nick Price.

 

Harrington is probably done winning majors, but Spieth or Brooks could get more. I lean more towards Brooks, I think he's more a killer and big game hunter than Spieth, but if Spieth figures it out he can get hot. I think Brooks is more like a modern Raymond Floyd, where Spieth is maybe a modern Nick Price.

Seve came to prominence in the 76 Open (2nd), and played at his peak until around 1991. He didn't have a "short window of greatness". Even his majors range across nine years.

Jordan Spieth is not like Nick Price.

It took quite a period of time for Price to be a permanent top global player.From 1988 to 2003, Price finished in the world top 50. He finished 51 in 2004. (This doesn't include the years prior to the OWGR)

Nick price had such an awesome swing. A little off topic but we’re there any years he contended in the masters? Asking since they have all the final round broadcasts and have never seen him there since he didn’t win

Nick Price was tied 2nd after 3 rounds at the 1986 Masters.

Very good question, but I think I would give it to Speef, even though I tend to love old-timers.

 

He he did it at a younger age, with much more pressure to perform, because he was the next big thing.

 

Harrington was a very good player that caught a gear

Jordan's swing was always a problem. Faldo was right when he called him a putting savant. He is now rich enough and still young enough to do a complete reconstruction and if it fails he still has a great life. As much as Leadpoison has ruined many golfers he did a great job with Faldo but it took years. Speith should take a couple of years off, put a team together, coach, physio, trainer etc, that can help straighten him out. I'm not suggesting his current team can't do that. Sometimes a good team keeps a player on the tour despite their faults. But Speith is in a rare position for a young pro where he doesn't "need" to keep playing.

Seve???? He was about 100 times the player Spieth or Harrington will ever be, and for a damn sight longer too.

It is clearly way to early to tell. Spieth could very easily have another dominant period of golf. This is comparing apples to oranges.
