Dustin Johnson out of the Olympics..

I don't blame him. I don't even think Rose's win is that awesome. We are so used to seeing golf hype up the majors, and talk down on the FedEx championship, that the new Olympics isn't that awesome and it only happens every four years. Let's not pretend like most of us sports fans wait anxiously every 4 years for this to happen. Yes it's a sometimes fun event with a lot going on, and many great amateur athletes who trained years for this, but only a few sports like football/soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, badminton?, table tennis?, that are popular sports people watch normally. Also didn't help that the Rio Olympics was a mess in and of itself.

I'd like to see the Olympics be run like a college or high school event. Teams of 4 and you can either do match play or stroke play. But what they have right now is boring and part of the reason why no one wants to play it.

There are some things I like about golf in the Olympics but it doesn't make sense for a tour pro.

Its in a weird spot on the schedule, the format isn't any different from the norm, the field isn't that strong, there isn't high money involved, a trip to Japan seems exhausting in the middle of the season, and there's not really any huge honor in the golf world to winning a gold medal. At least, I feel like winning the Fed-Ex cup or Memorial has more prestige than a gold medal.

If I was DJ, I wouldn't go either.

Don't think golf will ever be that big of a deal in the O's. If it does become important to the top players...it will be after this generation has retired . Maybe by 2035 it might become more exciting/important? I can enjoy the winter O's/skiing ...for some reason but, most people I know don't even watch much at all anymore. Think the last time I cared about watching, Bob Knight was still coaching college basketball players...ahhhh those were the days.

Drug testing, clean or on something whatever it may be, the bigger issue is letting the IOC and WADA know your constant whereabouts is probably a big turnoff in itself.

I am not going to sit and assume anything about DJ, or Tiger, or anyone that has made 60+ million dollars that flies in private jets and enjoys time in the middle of the ocean wherever they end up. I wouldn't want to give someone a call and tell them wherever I am going when I'm going off the radar for a while. You do all that stuff to disappear not allow some drug testing agency show up and test you.

With the note to distinguish between PEDs and recreational whatever’s..

I’ll add I really don’t care about the recreational stuff. I don’t expect any athlete to be a saint. But it’s ongoing madness for golf to NOT test randomly for PEDs and beta blockers etc.. as someone who has had their problems with the yips, I definitely see the appeal.

100% he plays if he qualifies. He stated it's a goal/somethinghe wants to do.

Tiger the greatest to ever play the game. The olympics would be the a nice, new, scalp, he's won everything else, 3 career grand slams, most PGA Tours wins, but an olympic gold would be dope to wear down to Starbucks.

Plus theres thousands of the finest (aka smokeshow) female athletes running around day and night.

I understand some think Jack's the greatest. It's all perspective and I understand both sides. Mine is more in line with this guy....

Q. Tell me I'm wrong. Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer who has ever lived. You're not wrong. He has not won as many majors as Jack, but he is going to win the most PGA Tour events. He might still surpass Jack's major total, but I think in the history of our game, nobody has played better golf than Tiger Woods. In 2000-2001 that whole stretch, no one has played the calibre of golf he played then. That's why I think he's the best who ever lived. No one ever reached the levels that he did. I think it's the relentlessness. Back then it would be nine wins, then the next year eight wins, then ten wins. It was year after year of relentless excellence. I think his 82 PGA Tour events he's won is nearly more impressive than the 15 majors he's won. The motivation to get up every morning and say I am going to keep on this journey and keep dominating people... and he's still doing it, and he's going to turn 44 in a few weeks. -Rory Mcilroy, December 2019

I don't think he's using PED's. I think he's using blow. Like probably some of the other folks in this thread thought.

this. Olympic golf doesnt move the needle for me at all. Most other individual sports i care about because we dont see any kind of international tournament (or any tournament really) for these sports unless you are avery specific niche fan. Golf we see the best in the world week in and week out and are all relatively easy to consume so who cares. like d1bound said give me some kind of different format and i can see getting into especially from a country aspect. i love the idea of it being a team event and i dont see why they dont do it and have both team and individual medals.

Bingo. I had no idea this was a thing.  Blank that.  I spend too much time alone without being accounted for to ever give that up willingly.

How ironic is it that some here are accusing DJ of not going due to unsavory habits ...... when the very testing agency wears the crown for king of the kingdom of unsavory habits.

the Olympic committee calling you a cheat is like Richard Nixon calling you a paranoid , two faced liar.   Just doesn’t fly far.

https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/31420322/ioc-president-thomas-bach-cancels-japan-trip-virus-cases

TOKYO -- IOC president Thomas Bach has canceled a trip to Japan because of surging cases of COVID-19 in the country, the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee said Monday in a statement.

Bach was to visit Hiroshima next Monday and meet the torch relay and then probably travel to Tokyo.

Organizing committee president Seiko Hashimoto said last week that the trip would be "tough" for Bach to make, which was interpreted in Japan as meaning it was canceled.

The trip was made impossible because of a state of emergency in Tokyo and other parts of the country that has been extended until May 31. The state of emergency was to have ended on Tuesday.

The statement said Bach's visit would be made "as soon a possible."

The postponement is an embarrassment to the IOC and local organizers with the Olympics opening in just over 10 weeks. Organizers and the IOC have repeatedly said the Olympics will not be canceled, and will be "safe and secure."

You guys are blaming it on drugs when the real issue is they don't want to deal with Japan and CV19 restrictions.

Rahm said he's going, but there were a lot of hoops to jump through including staying at the olympic village (1-2 hour drive from the course) and not being able to attend any other events.  It sounds like they will be stuck in their rooms until the golf begins and then they will be able to stay at a hotel near the course.

Nixon could've been a very good president if he wasn't a paranoid SOB ~ tiderider's father, in 1987 ...

yep ... DJ doesn't want to deal with the cronies/time commitment/covid restrictions, so everyone brings up the substance attacks ... 'merica! ... hope he wins the week after they are held ... they've been a shiite show for 40 years, now ... i wouldn't want anything to do with them ...

It's been said before but bears repeating.  Lots of the appeal of the Olympics is lost if you are confined to *your* own room.
