Phil Mickelson Ballspeed - PGA Tour Numbers vs Callaway Video

wolvverine

Recommended Posts

The PGA Tour sells us golf. Callaway sells us Callaway. If you polled this forum and asked them would the PGA Tour or Callaway be more likely to inflate Phil Mickelson's ball speed numbers I bet the majority would say Callaway. They have a vested interest in Phil Mickelson smashing a Callaway driver in hopes that you yourself will go out and buy one. Yet in a new Callaway video titled "How to Hit BOMBS with Phil Mickelson" Phil hits a fairway finder at 160 mph ball speed and his bomb at 163 mph -

Those numbers seemed low to me so I found a ProTracer compilation for Phil and he is sitting 173 mph pretty much every drive -

Perhaps an off day from Phil when they shot the Callaway video but from a guy who was sitting 173 from the tours numbers and claims he can get up to 182 or 183 mph it seems odd that Callaway would release a "Bomb hitting" video where Phil tops out at 163 mph.

Are the tour numbers juiced? Is someone in the Callaway video department going to be out of a job? Who really knows but I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on ball speed numbers for the tour guys and how accurate we think the numbers we're told and shown on the broadcasts are.

Watched a video of a wolverine being harassed by 1000 little wooly jumping spiders this morning. It was epic. Especially since they are my favorite spiders.

Maybe he lost the ball speed when he lost the weight?

Also, it looks early in the morning and cold in the Callaway video - - would that affect ball speed numbers? You can see there is still dew on the ground. Maybe the air was particularly thick/heavy.

Overall though good catch. . . it does seem suspect.

Something is definitely off with the numbers, I would be disappointed with bomb speed being 163mph.

But after typing that, that is me out of this thread, those spiders are freaking me out.

The only number that truly counts in golf is the one recorded on the scorecard.

I found it very interesting for a while but the novelty/fascination with ball speed etc. numbers has worn off for me.

Good smokescreen for Phil though as his obsession with ball speed numbers has coincided with his game going down the toilet.

If Phil’s game is in the toilet, I’m going to be spending a lot of time searching the depths of my toilets.

No one is carrying 294 with 163 ball speed. Playing around with the trajectory optimizer the best I could get was 275 with 163 ball speed. I've hit on a top tracer next to trackman and while they can be pretty close they can also be way off.

Lol. Now I hate most spiders. I do. But. Those little guys are Not really spiders. I think probably from another world. They are like the Koala bears of bears. Same in name. But not same at all.

Cameron Champ said that when he does his fittings vs what the recorded ball speeds during a tourney will vary. He is low mid 190's at tour events but said he was up to 10mph less during fittings.

As @enfuego said above, its not a concern, its an interesting discrepancy. Is the carry distance wrong or is the ball speed wrong? Because unless it was downhill and/or downwind, you're not getting 294 carry with 163mph. 294 carry is more in line with a 175-180mph ball speed depending on launch and spin, which is where Phil was living after his increased driver speed popped up, even topping 180mph a few times.

cold would potentially reduce the speed, but the dew would not. If anything that would add a couple yards

You must have not played around enough because on second try i was able to get 290 carry from 163. 17 launch 1400 spin. If you listen to what he is saying in the video, thats exactly what he is going for high launch low spin.

that said, phils chs is around 120-124.he was always in the high teens until the last few yesrs when he has become obsessed with distance. Id say his ball speed is in the mid 170s on average, probably ticks 180 occasionally.

Yes that is possible with 1400 spin but that would be an outlier. I used down to 1800 spin. With his chs he would be extremely lucky to hit that low of spin. His shot tracers also don't normally look like he is launching at 17 either in the commercial or on tour. Most pros keep there spin between 2000-2600 because they want to launch it lower. Launching at 17 theyd be well above 125ft peak height and losing the ball all over the place. Phil isn't the most accurate but again his balls aren't launch at 17.

I tried looking for the video link. I can't remember who I was watching when it was on but the topic was about club technology. I found that comment shocking.
