Kevin Na vs WRX

For some reason the mods don’t like us bickering about some subjects more than others. But your claim that “Most amateur players I see who are rockin blades aren’t being held back by them” is likely not true. They may not be held back significantly but if the guy sitting at 29th in the all time money list realizes he is aided by some more forgiveness in irons it is more than likely the amateur would be as well. Na gets paid by the stroke. If the amateur gets more enjoyment playing blades than shooting the best possible score so be it. But it is unlikely he scores as well on average.

I don't get the debate. When I thin a cavity back it goes about as far as a thinned blade. When I chunk a cavity back it goes about as far as a chunked blade ( nowhere). The idea that one makes up for a less than perfect swing is pretty silly really. It's off the tee, chipping and putting that really affect my scores. Iron play cavity back vs blade = very little difference in score. One just might leave you with a slightly longer chip shot. ;)

Na's remarks need to be taken in context. He makes a living playing golf. If you gave him a set of Apex MB's and an hour on the range and went out and played with him you'd probably say he plays blades just fine. But for him the difference between blades and cavity backs could mean a 25 place difference in his proximity to the hole from 150 yds ranking or something similar. As ThinkingPlus said, "he plays what makes him money".

You play what works, end of story. If Tiger switched to cavity backs and his strokes gained stat fell, then everyone would say he should switch back to his blades. No one on this board, or Kevin Na for that matter, knows more about the games of the big names on tour that play blades than they do.

Combo sets are really where it’s at, but the players you’re talking about are the absolutely elite ball strikers. They don’t miss middle more than a very small percentage of the time. Even most of them (aside from tiger) play a more forgiving and higher launching long iron or two. A lot of other guys on tour hit close to dead centre most of the time but not quite. A good example is Cameron Smith. It’s easy to see because he plays black AP2/t100 but he’s got a wear spot like a lot of elite amateurs I see. Some golfers have great swings but spread strike just a touch more. They might have other parts of their game that are very high in strokes gained. For a really good player, I don’t think the differences between club types show up until you get to the long end of the bag. Most average golfers would be okay up to an 8 or a 9 with blades. Combo sets are the real answer. You can have your cake and eat it too.

What makes it ironic, to me at least, is that for a fair number of blades and players CBs, there really isn't much difference. MOI is the measure of resistance to twisting, which is the point of perimeter weighting. When you look at the MOI numbers for some sets, it's not that stark. In some cases, it's negligible.

Srixon 700 series vs 900 series are a good example. Difference between 765 and 965 is about 120 pts. Personally, I don't find that significant, it's about 5%. The MP-63 might be a better example, was a thread here on WRX about them recently. MOI of the 63's is almost identical to that of the MP-4, MP-5, MP-18, etc.

Different story when looking at Ping G series irons in comparison, especially the G400 and forward.

I will say that it is interesting that most of the top world golf ranked players and the best iron players ever use blade irons, it does kinda make me want to play a set tbh. There must be a reason they do, personally I think it's the precision, turf contact and flight they can provide them. These guys also hate flyers

I fall into this category. Switched to blades a couple years ago and my overall scoring has improved / gotten more consistent. Iron game has always been my strong suit but I can get wild off the tee and my putting for sure is buns. Started playing blades because I always wanted to and loved the look and feel they provided. Control and consistency are what I'd prioritize in my irons, these tick those boxes while looking real nice. Haven't really seen the negative to playing them or any difference in forgiveness vs my previous players CBs. Bad swings = bad (possibly lucky) results, the scorecard doesn't ask questions. Play what makes you want to play.

I think all of the guys in the entire world that play blades post in the equipment section of this very forum LOL. There's 40 guys or so with indexes under 5 at my club and only 1 used blades but recently switched, i've played in a bunch of tournaments and can only recall being paired with 1-2 guys that used them. I guess they are out there, but i hardly run into them

I don't care what people use, people should play what they want to play if it makes them happy. I'm not going to tell someone they shouldnt drive a sports car or whatever, so i'm not going to tell someone not to play blades.

I just chuckle a bit at the reasons some give not to play SGI or GI clubs, like "they force you not to concentrate" or "you get crazy fliers" ....

When i read those i assume it's just an image thing, because you're trying to convince yourself you need them.

Someone who likes playing blades and is a stick will just say they prefer blades because they like the look and the trajectory they get, or something like that. Not "i play blades because they force me to concentrate". Imagine a pro saying that . "Man put a set of GI clubs in my hand and i just mentally check out" LOL. And if you get fliers with SGI's mathematically i'm due for 50,000 fliers in a row

I love these debates, they are always good for some chuckles.

Who cares what Kevin NA says, who cares what I say or anyone else says. Play what you like and what you feel good with.

That being said In the last two months (we still have walking golf in Georgia) I have played with three different guys that their games are seriously hurt by playing blades, and one who absolutely wasn't.

Hurt - All three shared these issues

I watched mis-hit 4-7 irons come up 20+ yards short of greens. They did not make solid contact and were almost always short of pin high except with the 9 iron downNot Hurt

I watched a guy make solid contact all day long, but his angle of path and clubface were both all over the place. (Cavities don't fix that)He stayed pin high pretty much all day long. The hurt guys when I asked about their irons (the reason I asked was one was playing VR blades, which I love, the other two were playing Mizuno's, which I played as a college player, and I asked if they minded if I took a swing). Each of them without me asking said, well I like the blade because I like to work the ball. They were 7-14 handicappers, and the only time I saw them work the ball was a left to left or a right to right miss, that's not working the ball. Um, path angle and face angle are what allow you to work the ball, the ball could care less whether or not it was a blade. Sure maybe a blade makes it spin a tad more in one direction, but it doesn't stop you from working the ball. None of them hit more than 5 greens that round.

The guy that wasn't hurt by playing blades is a 10 handicap and if he could chip and putt he would be a 4.

All that being said, did I say a word to the three guys absolutely being hurt by their blades? Of course not, because in the end play what makes you happy, plus that's three less people I have to worry about in most tournaments. People see my scores and that I average 3.5 birdies or better per round, think I am playing some super players irons. However most people see my bag and that I have three Cobra Speed Zone long irons in my bag, and play Cobra forged tour mid to short irons. They probably think I am a hack because of that setup, but I couldn't care less because I take their money and I play what I like. I just like winning more than looking pretty, some people do not.

I don't know i'd call them "GI" but i know Furyk was using the Srixon players cavities some time ago.

Some of those micro-cavities are not that different from blades. Especially some of the newer bigger blades

This is really the point. The guy is 29th all time in money with over $32 million earned. The guys saying he is a short knocker or has carded high scores are actually hilarious. Blades feel and look better. They're also easier to clean. Most + HC I know all play a cavity of some sort.

I played MP-14 in college for a year. Went back to cavities. Considering the rounds I have played in my life, and they have 95% been played with cavities I am due for the 50,000 "fliers" really soon too. I expect my 9 iron to start going 175 here really soon.

Play what you want, who cares what others play?

Seems in reviewing PGA Pro's WITB, many play hybrids, CB, more forgivable 'driving irons' etc. IIRC, or close, isn't it something like 20% (maybe less) Pros play MBs?

Each to their own, if works for you go with that....it's how many, not how, after all.
