Quarantine Nostalgia Fun -- What's Been In The Bag

Recommended Posts

I saw a post on Facebook where you searched through Google to find and post photos of all of the cars you have owned in your life. I thought it might be fun with iron sets and it took a bit of hard thinking for me to remember back. I started golfing at 19 years old in 1996 and miss the days of the independent golf shops with miles of used iron sets held together in dusty back rooms with rubber bands. There was always endless trade potential and it was super easy to try new sets, (though having golfed since 1996 I have only amassed a total of 8 different iron sets over the years). For me the independent shop of choice was Bob Martin's Golf and Fashions in London Ontario Canada and occasionally we would make a trip a bit further south to Fore Golfers Only in St Thomas Ontario. (I still take a day off work every spring to go to the Fore Golfers Only massive yearly blow out sale)!

Here are my beauties in order of appearance through the years.

Tommy Armour T-Line (bought a complete set used because I was poor and they were cheap and I just got a job at the local club and needed to learn how to golf)

Mizuno MSX 2-SW (bought used from the club I worked at. I'm pretty sure Maxfli stole this design for the Revolution Iron)

Taylormade LCG (bought new while working in the proshop of my local club)

Taylormade Firesole Tour (bought used because they looked so cool)

Taylormade 300 Forged (bought used because Mike Weir! 'Go Canada')

Cobra Carbon CB (bought used after a frustrating Ontario Betterball Qualifier where I hit it sideways and clearly needed a change!)

Adams Idea Pro Black MB (Bought new with a work bonus because DAMN THEY LOOKED SEXY, and I missed the feeling of a forged iron. Also.... the Cobra Carbon CBs were clearly a mistake)

Adams Idea CMB (bought used because I wasn't playing nearly as much with kids and wanted something more forgiving. The lofts were stronger than the MBs, they still feel like butter and are a club longer)

From time to time I wander through the big box stores and look at irons thinking it would be nice to have a new set, but can't justify the cost given how well the CMBs still perform.....how much better are the $1700 irons....I'm betting not much.

So what have you guys had in the bag over the years?

I did not pick the game up full time until after high school in 1996. Was huge into baseball. However, once I started I had wished I played at an earlier age. Immediately fell in love with all of the aspects of the game, especially equipment. I borrowed a set of black Powerbilt's from a friend's dad until I was able to get my first bag. Agree with above poster about the independent golf shop. That is exactly how I was able to get the clubs I had for a fraction of the cost.

From there I went:

975D driver

Callaway Bobby Jones 3 wood with a steel shaft

Titleist 962B irons

Cobra trusty rusty wedges, man I loved those wedges

Scotty Cameron Teryllium which I found in a random bin for cheap

From the 962B I went to Mizuno mp 14 that completely changed my though process on irons and how they feel. Two years later my entire golf bag was stolen from me. Makes me depressed just thinking about it. Would love to still have those clubs to take out from time to time.
