Bandon Dunes Covid19 Letter

I leave in 2 weeks for my Bandon Dunes trip and just got the following letter. Thought I would share for those heading there this year. Glad to see them being proactive in dealing with the issue.

 

 

Dear Participants,

On behalf of the staff at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, we look forward to welcoming you for your upcoming visit.

The health and safety of our guests is our highest priority and we continue to monitor the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in our region.

The entire Bandon Dunes Golf Resort team considers your safety a primary concern. The following are increased sanitation measures we are implementing to mitigate risk and reduce the spread of germs at the resort:

All staffers are required to clean workstations with disinfectant in their areas throughout the day.Door handles, phones, refrigerators, handrails, cash machines, restrooms, common areas and flat surfaces are being cleaned numerous times per day.All extra blankets will be encased and placed in room closets and changed out upon check out.All linen and terry, used or not used, will be removed and changed after every guest stay.Our standard in-room beverage service will be replaced with poly wrapped single use products. Disinfecting wipes will be provided for your use throughout the resort.Our customary ‘handshake welcome’ with our guests will be replaced with a warm “hello” to limit human contact.We will continue to monitor this process vigilantly to ensure that our staff is informed and prepared. I received the same letter. Because four breakfast buffets and three dinner buffets are included in our package (we have a very large group), I asked how they were going to manage the buffets. Since during the course of a regular buffet, dozens of people handle the same serving utensils. I will be interested to see how they are going to handle that.

By the time you get there, it would be surprising to see a buffet line. The utensils can be handled with a napkin, but a sneeze on the food could be a bigger issue. Everyone’s stopped using the plexiglas cough screens.

I have never liked buffets, so this is another reason to avoid them.

Considering there are 100,000-10,000,000 viral particles per milliliter of sputum of infected persons (whether they show symptoms or not), it is easy to see how aerosolization during a sneeze or cough can contaminate a lot of nearby people/surfaces. Interesting that the viral load level for release of infected individuals must fall below 100,000 viral particles per ml (still high by my numerical standards ). It is easy to see how this spreads exponentially and it won't be mitigated until everyone takes it seriously. Unaffected individuals can still act as carriers. That means a sharp change in everyone's habits of congregating in groups, etc. The hope within healthcare is to 'flatten the curve' (of outbreak patients) because it can easily overcome healthcare providers and then there's no one left to help. So reducing transmission can reduce maximum numbers until such time mitigation efforts can 'catch up' to the disease (testing to find out what levels are really like; vaccine development?). For instance, there was a report where one infected individual treated on the west coast resulted in quarantine of 20 healthcare nurses. Healthcare providers can sustain losses at that rate. [That ends my 'public service announcement' for the day.]

Just returned Thursday from the resort. Tuesday morning we woke to find this letter tucked in to our doors. It announces that all food and beverage for the resort would be takeout only. The letter mentions limited menus, but I was able to order anything from each of the onsite restaurants. Thursday morning another letter was handed out, containing voucher cards for free lunches.

 

All tables and chairs (including outside seating and lobby couches) had been removed, though we did eat our lunch at Pacific on the deck on Wednesday.
