No Team at My Son's High School

Recommended Posts

So, my son will be going to a small charter high school starting next school year. I looked all over and there are zero options for him to play an another high school. There are a few agreements in the region between schools but none available per his school of choice. So, has anybody else dealt with this and what would you suggest for options in competition? I'm thinking focusing on 1st Tee, US Kids (do they go that old?), etc. But, I don't know and would appreciate input.

I was looking forward to helping coach a high school team. Not to be, as I'll have a 1-member team now. I could try to organize a team at his school. Would probably only be good for unofficial matches with other schools. And, doubtful I could find the golfers there.

Thanks...

AJGA, of course, is an option.

What about looking at younger age groups that feed into that school? Perhaps with a small group of 7th & 8th graders, you could get a team together, and at least have some exhibition matches. Over time, those kids will improve their games and age into the high school. You could look to having those matches against other school's JV teams. Especially if you have a club willing to host your team, I can't imagine a coach of another school receiving an invitation that says "we'd like a friendly exhibition match against your JV team, we'll host it at Bushwood CC at a time convenient for you, and there's no cost to you ... we're just trying to develop a program for the future" turning it down, or at least calling back to dicsuss.

Why not from his school? Age? School not participating in sports? Talk with their AD and see if she/he are up to it or have available funding. You should have other schools in district/region. I know it is a long shot, but that should not keep you from trying.

Part of a lot of Charter Schools agreements with local school systems is that they will not offer high school sports. When this happens the local public high schools will allow those kids to play there. As well, if the Charter doesn’t offer a sport, a kid would still be eligible to play for the local public high school. This is at least how it works in Florida. Heck, in Florida they would probably be eligible to play for a private school as well. I would do some more checking and even call to your states High School Association.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Might be a blessing to be honest. My son loves it, but I feel like its 2 months of prime season gone.

My daughters coach is a younger and constantly wants to give (unneeded) swing advice. I asked her to please run it by our LPGA pro. While I understand she gives on course instruction. "Safe play here is right of the flag." Two different people in your ear isn't good.

If our school didn't have teams I wouldn't be heartbroken.

Thanks. But, I've gone down that path extensively and we're in a bind. No agreements exist that we can use. We happen to live in a district that refuses to acknowledge charter schools at all. That's the main problem. We're going into a charter that's outside our district...a charter with zero agreements in an adjacent district with zero agreements. Zero options on this. Nothing. But, have been looking into 1st tee tourneys and it looks great for this region. So many kids homeschooling here now that they probably flood that system.

Can confirm.

Even though a charter is a private business, it is overseen by the districts County Office of Education, and therefore, falls under the district. So your son is eligible to play at ANY public school in his district.

Furthermore, you may want to check the operational agreement and guidelines for the charter school. The majority are required to provide a stipend for extra curricular activities, within reason.

In the state of California charters have an authorizing entity, that could be the school district the charter operates in or county office for the county in which the charter operates. A charter must submit a petition to the school district first, if approved by the governing board of the school district they are the authorizer, if the school district denies it, they can appeal to the county office if approved the county office will become the authorizer. Sports teams or arrangements with school districts for kids to play for their teams must be outlined in the petition. I work for a county office, we have 7 charters that we have authorized, one of which is our own charter. It’s a career tech ed charter with no sports teams or arrangements with a school district to allow our kids to play sports.
