Hilton Head in June?

Recommended Posts

Will be going to Hilton Head in June. Have time for one or two rounds. Harbor Town, Atlantic Dunes, and Heron Point are all out due to aerification. Does anyone have any recommendations for other courses in the area? I’ll be playing as a single and prefer to go out early in the morning. This is my first time participating on the site, and I would really appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!

The issue you are going to have is that almost every course aerates in June. Peak golf season is March-May. You can check with Jones at PD, Oyster Reef and Bear Creek in HHP or HHN off island. Avoid Shipyard and Port Royal. Played the Golden Bear in Indigo Run for the first time this past week and while in good shape, pace of play was brutal. Still not a bad track for the $$

Why not play at highly discounted rates right after aeration? I bet somewhere like Harbor Town does a great job aerating and you will get 98% of the experience for like 60% of the cost.

Honestly this is one of my favorite tricks to save money and have done it at Kiawah, Arcadia Bluffs, and Sawgrass. Sawgrass was the only course that it even impacted play and just because the greens were slow not bumpy.

I'm a local and as HackerDave sad earlier, most courses here punch in June so the best thing to do is call every course you want to play and ask them what their conditions are. I also ask them how long it's been since they punched. If it's been a couple weeks or more they're usually very playable.

Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto Dunes is one of my favorite for conditions. Of course it is well below Harbour Town and Atlantic Dunes. If you are going there and don’t know when you might go back, I would still be willing to play Harbour Town. One of the best layouts you will find that will challenge every part of your game. Be sure and walk the course with a caddie. Very walkable. We go every year the Tuesday after the Heritage.

I've played Oyster Reef, Golden Bear and Dolphin Head several times either the first week in April or the week after Christmas and they were usually in pretty good shape and I enjoyed them all. Shipyard charges double of any of those on GolfNow and it is always in worse shape and not quite as entertaining. Either way, not a good value. I played all 3 Palmetto Dunes, the Arthur HIlls course was totally forgetable, the RTJ was interesting. Unfortunately the signature hole is the only one on the ocean. I played Atlantic Dunes last April and it was in fantastic shape. It is what I imagine the course conditions are for touring pros. Unfortunately I had to play it on the weekend so it cost me but I did definitely enjoy it. I played Hilton Head National last December and I'll definitely go back there again too.

For what it’s worth - and this won’t have any bearing on a trip in June - Old South was very hit or miss in terms of conditioning when I played it today. Some greens were fine, others had significant areas that were bald or patchy. Conditioning on the course varied widely.

I enjoyed HH National quite a bit when I played there in November. Shipyard in December was just ok, didn’t really like the course that much, but it was fine.

Not sure where I will be playing tomorrow and Tuesday yet, but i will post a quick update.

Hey SoILgolfer - I'm in the same boat as you. We were originally scheduled to go to HHI in May but have pushed it back to June 13-20, hoping things are back up and running by then.

We are staying in Sea Pines and the original plan was to play Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point. Unfortunately all of the Sea Pines courses have aerification notices during this time but are not showing any discounted rates online.

It appears that Palmetto Dunes has updated their aerification schedule. RTJ is now listed as April 27 - May 1.

As of now, I am leaning towards RTJ one morning and Old South another morning. Will also be playing as a single in the early AM.
