Thinking of Joining Club in Bay Area

Hi All,

I am under 35, live in San Mateo area and am thinking about joining a club if the price is right.

I currently play 1-2 rounds a week and practice maybe 2-3 times a week. I think it would make sense financially as well as join a community to meet some people (I usually play golf by myself) with a quality course. I am looking for something laid back where the focus is around golf and less about the social aspects.

Any recommendations?

Take a look at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward. I used to belong there but the distance for me got too much but for someone in San Mateo it is a simple cross on 92. Good practice facility, great course, good members - and I bet you can still get a "young professional" deal for under 40 years old.

The commute to Stonebrae will be a killer on weekdays. Im a member there and the course is great and the range is excellent. That being said, I live 5 minutes from the club. San Mateo you are looking at at least 45 minutes to get there. Not ideal when you just want a range session.

That's what I was basically dealing with at Stonebrae coming from Redwood City. Love the course though. When I left they were just talking about breaking ground on a new building just between the parking lot and the 18th green. Has anything happened to that space yet?

nothing yet. still open ground. Not sure the last time you were up there but they built houses at the end of the range and all along the first fairway. Not sure why anyone would buy those houses. I already put a few balls in their backyard.

We're probably also a little far being down in the South Bay, but Silver Creek Valley CC is actively accepting new members.

I was a little bit worried about the commute. I do live in Foster City and use Mariners Point a lot. Once summer comes in hopefully it will be easier for me to get there in weekdays (or early mornings). I was a little bit worried about the commute. My last round as a member was when they were breaking ground for those houses at the end of the range...I've hooked a few in that area for sure!

Greenhills country club in Burlingame. McKenzie design and close to San Mateo. Slips my mind whether their range looks like though.

The range at Green Hills is narrow. Up at the top of the hill, I can only assume it was an afterthought to the design.

Thats unfortunate. I was only there to review the wedding venue years ago so I wasn’t able to play/practice there. The course looked great however!

I would recommend Green Hills CC, which is technically in Millbrae. They have a MacKenzie membership (https://www.greenhillscc.com/Membership) which could be helpful when looking at costs but limits your rounds per year. Also, you should look into the downtown membership for the Olympic Club. It allows you to use the golf facilities/range (Daly City) and if you are OK waiting 16 months to get in, it would be my top recommendation.

Lake Merced is a nice option with a great practice area. The golf course is excellent as well.
