Need information/specs on Cleveland 588 blades

Can anyone tell me the background on the clubs in the link? They are Cleveland 588 blades in satin finish.

Specifically, when were they made?

Were they sold in any great quantity?

Are they forged or cast?

If anyone has played these, I'd value your impressions. I picked up a pristine set 3-PW this afternoon.

I'm wondering if they were cast because, damn they look almost brand new.

They set up perfectly. I've never seen a club that looked any better at address.

Iron 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 PW

Loft (°) 17 19 22 25 28 32 36 40 44 49

Lie (°) 57 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 64

Length (") 39.5 39 38.5 38 37.5 37 36.5 36 35.5 35.25

Can't find the offset...but I'm pretty sure it's a minimal constant vs. progressive.

They are cast carbon steel - 8620 - same as the 588 wedges.

Came in the satin you have, rtg, chrome, melonite and BeCu - with Square Groove options in all sets.

Also some tour issue stuff floating around out there w/out the diamonds on the faces and/or "588" "sq. groove" stampings on the backs.

1989-1995

Melonite and chrome versions command a bit of a premium....BeCu seems to be the rarest. I have no numbers to back this up - just personal observation.

Shafts were Cleveland Het's - a graphite version of some sort - S400's....and I think S300's? For sure S400's though.

49* PW....the way it's supposed to be!!!!

Wow, thanks very much. Do you happen to know anything about the H.E.T. shaft? I'm guessing it's stiff, but there are no markings on the shaft band regarding flex.

These will be fun to take to the range. Not sure if they are great performers, but they sure look nice,,,,and for 50 bucks for the whole set in9/10 condition, I said what the heck. Why not?

No idea about those shafts - never play'd them.

I have a set of the satin blades I re-shafted with 6.0's....but now am playing the p's in rtg w/ s400's thanks to a stellar trade here on the wrx.

The two sets were set up to mix and match/make yourself a split set....so they are very similar (blade vs. P) in offset, etc. P version being slightly more forgiving.....

I personally found the satin blades w/ 6.0's to be a bit clicky....but deadly accurate. Unforgiving as well...but in the short irons - surgical tools. Impressive with a steady hand. Long irons were pretty much a lost cause.

Playing s400's in the rtg's now. I like them. Coming off x100's w/sensicore. Seeing a higher ball flight and a little more versatility in the short irons (1/2, 3/4 shots seem easier, etc.)

Visually, some people don't digg the offset in the lower irons. Admittedly it does look a touch awkward....but you get over it after a couple swings (i did). Now I'm digging it.

Run a search for 588p on here - you'll find all you want to know

I am playing a set of the 588/588p RTG in a combo set with rifle flighted 6.0's and have been for 4 years or so. I also own a set of 588 melonite blades. I have been playing the 588 melonite wedges exclusively for the last 8-10 years and have multiple sets as backups for rotation in as they wear out. I really love these clubs. i have a set of tour issue ta1ff satins that I have brought out a few times, but keep gaoing back to the 588's (although I haven't given the ta1ff much of a chance.

I ended up buying a set of melonite 588P womens set with graphite shafts for my wife a few years ago and she loves them too.

I played a full set of the 588p RTG for a short while and just didn't like the thicker sole and the offset in the shorter irons to the 588's are perfect!

Cleveland started to sell them in 1988.

Roger Cleveland used a very straight-forward system for model numbers: "588" means that it is the fifth model of irons that he designed and they were introduced in 1988.

There was also a 588P (cavity back) and Cleveland offered mixed 588 sets of the blades and cavity backs.

You may have also seen the Cleveland 792's (which I think were introduced after Roger sold the company to Rossignol)

This is an old thread but I have a set of the 588 3-PW in melonite that are about and 8-8.5/10. Does anyone know if the lie angles can be bent on these? I read that they can crack.
[/quote]

Hi McCleery, I have these in the satin. I have bent the SW (which is essentially just a 56º 588 wedge) back and forth a few times. All that happened was the finish chipped off at the pressure point but no cracking or snapping disasters, thus far. I am in the middle of stripping the finish off the 3-PW in order to torch finish and add an oil can effect. Will post pics when complete if anyone is interested!
