College Recruiting

Recommended Posts

I tend to agree with this. In January was feeling the pressure of getting more involved with AJGA. In April I am not feeling that pressure at all. I think more kids will be playing close to home and the class of 2023 will benefit greatly from the hot mess the NCAA is stirring up.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

The articles I have read the Universities are complaining. Keeping the kid another year doesn't give them more scholarship money and the Conferences/Colleges have to figure out how to pay for it.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/30/sports/ncaa-spring-sports-eligibility.html

“In our world, those are dollars we don’t have,” said Andy Fee, the athletic director at Long Beach State, warning that some colleges might drop certain sports. “I caution people that think they’re going to put Humpty Dumpty back together again that there are heavy conversations down the road. I think it’s going to be happening across the country.”

“There’s going to be some tough discussions,” Fee said. “A coach is going to say, ‘I appreciate what you did, but we don’t have a scholarship for you.’”

@golf.placement.services (Brendan Ryan) had a great IG story this morning on college recruiting. Touches on the realities of COVID adding a year of eligibility as well. My favorite part was him talking about recruiting services and saying they are a con (he even runs one!)... they put out misleading information to make you feel like you don't know what's going on and provide an overabundance of options which actually makes it more difficult to choose.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Not sure if this was posted, but University of Wisconsin won't bring back seniors in all spring sports. Wisconsin: No extra spring season for our seniors

""UW Athletics places tremendous emphasis on its student-athletes earning an undergraduate degree and having a great competitive experience," Wisconsin officials said in the statement. "In the case of the UW spring student-athletes to which the NCAA's waiver would apply, a substantial percentage of the student-athletes are scheduled to earn their degrees before next spring. In spite of today's uncertainties, we will do everything possible to support our student-athletes as they work toward those degrees."

Here is a graphic showing the financials for LSU for the '17-'18 season. Only 3 sports actually profit; Men's football, Men's baseball, and Men's basketball. It is absolutely factual that "the Football program funds every other sport" at this particular school and many other schools like it

Note - this is only 1 school and 1 season, and every school will be different. LSU would be considered one of the largest sports schools in terms of budget, revenue, expenses, etc

I played golf at a medium-large state school and our budget was the lowest or second lowest of any sport, but I imagine our revenue was as well. That's just how it goes

I hope there are minimal impacts on college golf programs

But.... if college golfers are able to graduate on time (online classes via Zoom), what benefit would an additional year of eligibility do for them? Unless they'd want to stay in school just to play 1 more year of college golf? Maybe the high end players at the top schools (thinking of chances of going pro), but all the lower tier schools/players, do you think they'd take that offer?

There is a golfer at the University of Iowa (Alex Schaake) that is coming back for another year. He is a top player on the team and 2019 B1G Player of the Year. Like any golfer, his ultimate goal is the PGA Tour. He also wants to win the Nebraska (his home state) amateur title for a record 5 times in a row. He is being offered the opportunity for free practice facilities, free tournament experience and free coaching for another year. I don't know his graduation status. However, seems like it would be hard to pass up another year of college golf if it was offered to you (and you aren't the all-world beating Tiger Woods level player).

Brendan is correct about the recruiting services being a con. However, I don’t think he is a con. I know him a bit and I don’t believe he tries to con anyone. I think he is totally honest and even when my kid reached out and needed some advice about and injury a few weeks before school, he was really cool and gave great insight, and advice.

One time while walking with him he gave me the 411 on college camps. It wasn’t a great surprise, but it wasn’t great news.

He is a connection for maybe 90 percent of the college coaches. The guys knows just about everybody.

From what I know, if someone was to use his services, he is the most qualified and honest of any service.

If a kid is too lazy to their own legwork in regards to contacting and maintaining relationships with colleges and coaches, and needs to use a service then I would think Brendan is the guy to go to.
