Grip psychosis - getting the right grip size

I love the way MCC+4s feel on Dynamic Gold's, but I play mostly ProjectX, which I've read don't taper at the handle like Dynamic Golds. Is that correct? I don't have calipers to measure the diameter at the bottom hand. I wear a medium glove and I've played MCC and Tour Velvet Standard, 1, 2, 3 extra wraps under the double-sided tape and also midsize. The TV are 1/16 smaller diameter than MCC. MCC Midsize are too large. I played them on irons and wedges for a year. Could someone recommend how I could replicate the exact diameter of MCC+4 on a Dynamic Gold with either a an MCC or MCC+4 on a ProjectX? Should I build up the right hand more using MCC?

That's a decent solution including a lot more trial and error. I'm hoping that some of the experts in this site who know what they're doing can help me here.

Trial and error? You know the grip you like and the shaft you like the grip on.

 

measure the shaft + tape on the DG and then recreate the size on the Project X.

 

size will be identical. No trial and error.

Agree with the above - I use aldlia shafts which have a constant taper rather than a parrallel section at the top. The difference between the Aldila driver shaft and the dynamic gold in the bottom hand when measured using calipers was equivalent to 4 wraps different which you can definitely feel.

I measured the thickness of the grip tape I use, and then it takes me 20 seconds to work out if I need to to any extra (or less wraps) from my standard 4 all the way on a dynamic gold.

If you're anal about the diameter of the grips, you're also going to be anal about the difference in feel between a built up MCC vs an MCC+4 that hasn't been built up - adding lots of tape makes grips way firmer, and the MCC is already firmer than the +4

As for your original question, you first need to figure out if the butt section of a PX shaft is the same all the way down the length of the grip as a DG. I don't have any handy but all someone would need is a shaft without a grip and calipers....be carefuly because stiffer shafts tend to have bigger butt sections...probably easier just to do it yourself once and then you know for sure

The reason I say trial and error is the question about diameter on the bottom (right hand) of ProjectX vs Dynamic Gold. If the right hand of PX is bigger, I can't use an MCC+4, so I'd need to build up an MCC at different levels for left and right hand. 1/16 isn't a big difference, but I can definitely feel 1/8 difference in diameter. I'm not an experienced club builder or frankly even that handy so without being able to measure bottom hand diameters of grips, I'm not sure how great a job I'd do. Trying to minimize my mistakes.

The grip area is average 10" inch long from the butt and down, and there is NO OTHER WAYS than using a caliper to measure it, since both BBGM and actual play length will make a difference for how much there is left of the strait butt section. Dynamic Gold S series has about 5 inch left, so we are over the steps with about half the grip, but we should build up those steps to make a strait butt section thats 10 inch long before we add the grip.

You should buy that caliper who is already mentioned above here, its no way around it if we want to make this right.
