Back up October plan for Bandon. Flying into North Bend and it seems crazy high priced!

Have a trip planned to Ireland for early October, but just in case We have to cancel I was thinking about a back up plan to Bandon. Last time I went it was super easy and inexpensive to fly into North Bend. Now there isn’t even a direct flight from Portland to North Bend. Anybody know when that changed?

looks like it. you do know there is a pandemic going on? or that 80% of all flights have been cancelled? or that Bandon has been closed for a while now? if not...then can't help you much more!

North Bend is a PITA to fly into and flights there are commonly canceled. Fly to Eugene, make the easy drive. Save time and hassle.

If you read carefully, you will notice, I said a backup trip for OCTOBER.... And considering the resort is opening next week there are flights available. Before you make a smart comment, read and think. If you don’t have anything positive to add, just ignore the post. Thank you.

Yeas it is, but I can’t believe the only airport that has a direct flight to North Bend is SFO.

Seasonally Denver has it or at least did. My house is bigger than that airport* so it isn't surprising that they have very few commercial flights.

*Note-Not actually true or at least I don't think it is. Just saying, that airport is tiny.

Short answer. Locals drive there, and the airlines have decided it's easier to send planes to SFO and connect with regionals to OTH than to fly direct from PDX with a 2/3 empty aircraft.

Anytime Ive looked into flying to North Bend from Boston over the years avg RT was 800-875 now with fewer fights etc Im guessing over a 1000

I read everything carefully and saw OCTOBER! Your ONLY question was "....when that changed" - in regards to no flights. I answered that question. The flights were all cancelled due to the pandemic and the closing of Bandon! PERIOD. Maybe you should read your own question before making a smart comment!

North Bend has only had the one United commercial flight in and out (the SFO one) for a few years now. United offers a second flight in and out of Denver during the summer season.

I want to say the commuter Portland flights by PenAir ended back in 2017 when they filed for Chapter 11.

So the short answer is, the airport exists in its current state to service at the most, two flights a day during the summer, and one the rest of the year regardless of the global pandemic.

Eugene is a nice small regional airport.

3 hour drive if you head straight west thru Florence.

About 20 mins shorter if you go thru Reedsport.

Real nice drive along the coast.

Or fly into Portland and it will be about a 4 hour drive.

No flights from Portland to Bend has ZERO to do with the pandemic. That flight route was canceled a few years ago. SFO is your only bet. I am sure that the DEN flight is extinct. Now I will say that I could see the SFO flight getting whacked as a result of the pandemic. My ultimate fear is the pandemic could create a SERIOUS issue for some destination golf resorts.

I’d pay more money to fly to Eugene and not deal with North Bend. I’ve had multiple friends get stuck in North Bend due to fog in SFO. The one time I used it I found it to be a PITA. Every other time I’ve used Eugene and found it a better option.

United Flies direct from Denver and if you catch the right days you can get it for $275/$300 RT. The one thing is flying into North Bend the rental car fee seems crazy. A standard / full size is around $800-1000 for 4 days. If you have 4 going and SUV is way more.

Given how cheap it is to fly into Portland and rental difference we just plan it to drive and hit part of the coast on the way down. Yea 4 hr drive roughly but can save a decent amount that can be used for an extra round or two.

I got stranded in Eugene basically a full extra day coming home from Bandon for what essentially amounted to a flat tire on the plane. I guess they had to fly a new tire in from Seattle. The bottom line is that if you aren't flying into/out of a major airport you are at the mercy of a lot of different factors. When I go to Bandon again, I may just fly into Portland to avoid the extra layover and potential delay hassle.

Portland and Eugene aren’t significantly different from an airport connection standpoint. North Bend is.
