WITB: A Father and Junior Golfer's Journey Together

So this is a little different WITB as I will be showing off both my set-up and that of my 8 year old, very dedicated, junior golfing son. A little about both of us first. I am a 33 year old teacher who was also coaching but is taking a break from the coach to instead focus on teaching and spending time with my son as he dives further and further into the rabbit hole of this sport we all love so much. I was an average golfer at best but as he plays more I have seen my own game improve and I am flirting with the arena of becoming a single handicapper. My son has been playing for essentially a year and began with PGA Jr. League and soon ventured into the world of US Kids tournament play. His first tour netted a second place overall and an overall scoring average he was happy with but left him far from satisfied. Over the winter we tweaked his set up and have arrived at what you see now. He has yet to put the new driver, fairway, and hybrid into play; however, his first spring tournament achieved a new tournament best by over 6 strokes so the work is paying off! He has once a week lessons, once a week PGA Jr. League Practices, a day at the range, and we get a 9 hole walk in on Sunday afternoons.

 

Dad's Set-up:

Driver: Ping G30 with Adilia NV Reg Shaft

Fairways: Cleveland Black 3 and 7 with Bassara Lite Flex Shafts

Irons: Titleist AP 1 5-PW with DG XP90 R300 Shafts

Wedges: Cleveland RTX 3 48 degree, Cleveland RXT 2 52 degree, Titleist Vokey SM6 56 degree

Putter: TP Mills Flat T Proto (Alabama boy has to have his TP Mills!!!)

Bag: Ogio Shredder

 

Junior's Set-Up

Driver: Callaway XR16 13.5 with a Flynn Golf Shaft

Fairway: Cobra Biocell 3-5 set at 19 degrees with a Flynn Golf Shaft

Hybrid: Cobra Biocell 4-5 set at 25 degrees with a Flynn Golf Shaft

Irons: US Kids TS2 Tour Series

Wedges: US Kids TS2 Tour Series

Putter: US Kids Sandhills

Bag: Academy Sports Junior (We actually LOVE this bag)

I am telling you it has been incredible. The biggest thing is he developed a love for the game first. We never pressured him to go to the course once he started playing and now he cannot get enough and loves practicing and playing. Find a coach that truly loves working with kids like ours does!

 

I love that TP Mills headcover!

 

I have a small collection but this is by far my favorite and always gets plenty of looks at the course! We live only about 45 minutes from the TP Mills workshop so I have a special love for these putters.

I was waiting for someone to ask about those! It is a matching set (D, 3W, Hybrid) I got off eBay from a gentlemen in the Philippines. They are stormtroopers mashed up with traditional Samuari imagery. My son is a Star Wars nut so they were a natural fit for his bag. They are definitely head turners! If you do a quick search on eBay for stormtrooper headcover they come up!

Great setups man. Im 36 with a 3 year old that loves the game too. We hit foam balls in the front yard almost daily and he comes to the driving range with me once a month or so. I really hope his love for the game continues as he gets older.

He loves Pokemon, Star Wars, and Harry Potter so they all get represented!

That is a great way to get them going. I coached High School golf while mine was 5, 6, & 7 and I just slowly introduced it to him and all of the sudden he wanted to get serious so we got him involved in PGA Jr. League and USKids and it took off!

Now that brings back so many great memories. They grow up to fast. ENJOY EVERY MOMENT NOW!!!!!

My son is now 30 Going to visit and play golf in a few days can't wait!

Thank you guys for all your kind words! He is in the middle of his Spring USKids Tour and has just got PGA Junior League practice started. I will try to update the WITB with any changes we make as he continues on. We don't do the whole "prodigy" thing or try to push him to hard. This game is about him having something to focus on and have fun! These pics are from his last tournament where they played in 38 degrees with rain and driving wind. Miserable conditions and he never once complained and the practice round the day after when the weather was perfect! He asked to play the day after to fix some things he wasn't happy about at the tournament. He has really developed a love for golf!
