Any good golf apps on apple watch?

I too have an Apple Watch 4 and sold my Garmin S20 watch because I obviously didn't need it.

I originally started with the Hole 19 Golf App because it had good reviews on the free version and integrated nicely on the watch. I ran into problems with the app not loading or the yardages being way way off.

Then I switched to Golfshot and couldn't be happier. I also decided to pay the yearly fee of $30 or whatever it costs because you also get a view of the hole with yardages on your phone. Perfect to know how far it is to a bunker, etc.

I also have a laser with slope too.

  • 2 weeks later...

I used the grint for the first time today on my Apple Watch 5 and it worked well. Didn’t see where i could keep track of putts but it must be there somewhere. All the rest seemed better than Hole 19 which I used for almost 2 years until the Apple 13 update a couple of weeks ago and it stopped finding the locations. Assuming it doesn’t rain tomorrow will use again.

Arccos is pretty good. I switched over from Hole 19 when I got the sensors for free.

From what my friends say that own Apple watches, they have to charge it nearly every night. That was reason enough for me NOT to consider it. Maybe the latest Apple version has improved that aspect, but its golf functionality, as I hear, is 3rd party adding cost, which may or may not be a problem.

Anyhow, I went with Garmin Fenix 5X and it's blended companion golf iPhone app. By pushing a button on the watch, I can use the watch only or the iPhone app or both. I was quite surprised at how accurate the GPS is and at the end of the round, all golf round data is transferred to the Garmin golf iPhone app, which permits editing. But the most satisfying part, on a full charge, after playing 18 holes using Garmin Golf GPS and HRM, I still have 3/4 of a charge left, that's about two weeks if I don't play more golf.

I won't detail all its sports functionality just that I can play 3 rds of golf, clearly see distance to and cover yardage of hazards, count fairways, and putts, etc, receive alerts, calendar appt reminders, see four time zones, control my Bluetooth speaker or Bose headset, weather and accept or reject phone calls just can't talk on it as a phone extension, which is fine for me. If I don't use golf GP one charge lasts 3-4 weeks and it charges quickly. The amount of usable sports data and information is amazing. Since buying a few dressy watch bands for it, my expensive watches are collecting dust in the watch draw. lol

Good luck with your decision.

But will it call the police if you get hit in the head with a golf ball and fall down unconscious? Actually the 3 party apps for the Apple Watch pretty much function as you describe your garmin and aren’t too bad. Could be better. I find the yardages accurate. But yes, you do have to charge every night but I do you my Apple Watch even if not golfing.

No, not the police. lol There's a function when configured in the Garmin Connect iPhone companion app (no-charge) that works with Fenix 5x GPS in an emergency. It marks my GPS coordinates and via satellite notify's a stated person where I am using my coordinates. Its a valued function that I only recently discovered. Considering I am a road cyclist, hiker, and mountaineer, hunter, and skier it has great value, etc.

I have a number of high-end watches but wear my Garmin Fenix 5x 24/7. Like Apple, some aftermarket manufacturers have come out with a series of great looking watch bands. I have "4" so dress it up or down for the occasion. It not only accurately tracks HR for the last 4hrs which I use during golf but tracks the quality of my sleep monitors my stress level plus provides other pertinent functions like provides three time zones used when traveling. Today I will use the Elliptical, treadmill and strength training apps and tomorrow indoor cycling app. I charged it before playing golf last Saturday and right now have 52%+ battery left. LOL, can you tell I like it?

Awesome! Yeah I'd totally get a Fenix if I did all those activities. Love the battery life and GPS accuracy. But for me the Samsung Active2 was the better choice since I don't do any "real" exercises and it's good enough. Battery life can last for two days, better than Apple watch. Opted more for regular day to day use, and will have to see how that works out. Still might go for Garmin later who knows. Really wanted the S60 but the screen isn't as nice and I feel there should be a new version coming right out.

The only way I know to edit our scorecard is download the Garmin Golf app.  It's a pretty nice app and provides a handicap and other data.

At the end of the Round, you hit SAVE on the Garmin Fenix watch; it automatically syncs into the Garmin Connect app and simultaneously to the Garmin Golf app.  If some holes were missed or need editing that's what the Garmin Golf app is for. Also, reason I keep my iPhone within 30' for me during golf rounds.

Open the golf app, and you can edit each hole. Once you're done modifying each hole, it then simultaneously syncs the update back to Garmin Connect App.  Unfortunately, it won't update the Round that shows in the widget on the Fenix watch.

I played a course the other day, where some holes were really close to one another, and others were redirected. Consequently, the satellite was either discombobulated from those holes, or the golf hole score wasn't inputted and saved correctly before moving to the next hole. Hit'em straight.

Not Apple but may be helpful. Garmin Fenix watch has a very sophisticated built-in GPS system so it doesn't need my phone for any activity. It even gives the wearer the choice as to which satellite network signals to access for certain sports activities and detail. When I reach the golf course and select "Golf app" on the watch and it finds the appropriate satillite and provides the a list of nearby courses. It carries 40k golf courses. Additonally, my fenix is set to beep and tell me when it connects or disconnected from my iPhone.

I have been trialling a few golf apps on my Apple Watch, after my Tag Heuer yearly sunscription ran out last month. Now I am based in Australia, and have discovered that several of the popular apps do not work effectively here. Track My Golf just will not find a GPS signal, regardless of where I am in the country. U Swing often wont load properly and when it does the yardages are often up to I kilometer out. GolfPad was great for FMB yardages and distance tracking, buy I couldn't enter scores from the watch. 18Birdies is reasonably good with easy to read yardages & simple score entry, but once every three or so holes it refuses to give an accurate yardage and says you are 500+ mtrs away when you're only 120ish out.

So, the only two which seem to operate effectively are The Grint and Tag Heuer apps, both of which seem to give very accurate and consistent distances, and both do the score entry quite well. The Grint is better for its score entry as it's simpler and has more depth, while the Tag app gives you the benefit of a map on the watch, so you can see all hazards and get measurements to them. I don't really need these at my home course but I do find the map option very useful when travelling, as the map can reveal hazards which are not always visible to the naked eye.

I will use the Grint for a few more rounds before deciding which app to go with, for the next 12 months.
