Any excessive amount of repetition will eventually due damage, and hearing about Tiger I'm betting he did go to 'excess'.

Witness my brother, who did a few Ironman events, numerous triathlons, marathons, etc., by age 35 his knees were toast, couldn't be related to the 150+ miles a week of bike training, Lord knows how much running.....YMMV, but I agree with Tiger (who also probably has access to the best Orthopedic MDs on the planet)

Hell yes Tiger has an easily addicted personality! Women, prescription drugs, winning, running, whatever. Without that he wouldn't be the arguably GOAT golfer we know him as. Addictive+Most Talented = greatest ever. The best never just do it on talent alone, and definitely don't just go through the motions on practice. The fields are too competitive for that.

I'm also surprised to hear that running on sand is stressful for the body, but it totally makes sense since it's a) very hard to do b) causes your body to exert a lot more motion than normal, despite the soft sand being shock dispersing.

soft sand is crazy hard (ie Florida Panhandle)

Packed down sand like on the East in Myrtle Beach and Daytona etc is very easy in running shoes. The beaches are also wide there and flat

I don't like running on the beach due to the banking angle. With a crowned road (that isn't busy) you can switch sides every few minutes, but with an out-and-back beach run I can't stand the long periods of time with the same bank.

Interesting story. A few years ago I had tendinitis in my right elbow. Too many gates hit skiing plus golf drove me to an orthopedic specialist. He was the department head at UNM. He looked at my elbow and said there were 4 options. First was PT. Second was corticosteroid injections. Third was prolotherapy. Fourth, of course, was surgery. I was familiar with all approaches, but #3. He told me that prolotherapy was injections of saline into the affected area. Being somewhat skeptical I asked what good would salt water do in my elbow. He said no one really knew, but the speculation was that simply poking holes in the affected area allowed more nutrient flow making it easier for the body to heal itself. Furthermore, some folks believed that was all that steroid injections did as well with the additional bad side effects of the corticosteroids. I chose PT and left muttering witch doctor, quacks, grrr... . You won't see many medical majors switching to physics for sure.

Thats nuts. I hope it worked out, though.

 

I will say this. Doctors can actually be true miracle workers , almost gods, in a way.

 

For example, we had a big scare with my mother a few years ago. They thought after a lot of very extensive tests, that we were looking at the worst of the worst.

 

And I got to see how big Surgeons, in this case, liver/pancreas/biliary system, are absolute Rock Stars. I mean, they walk the halls surrounded by residents and all the other doctors and medical professionals are pretty much deferential, almost in awe of them.

 

Fortunately, between the surgeon and this highly experienced radiologist, they determined that it was a benign situation they had never seen before quite like this. And these guys had dealt with hundreds of these types of cases. Only my mom could stump the experts!

Not only running but any form of exercise done in excess. Mine was rowing using the concept 2 machine. I became addicted and obsessed with this beast of a machine. I was averaging one million KM a month at high intensity. I did this for over 10 years. Now my tendons are pretty much wrecked. I think it comes down to personality I am type A and I am looking for my next challenge and I think I have found it in Golf.

Too many of the running variety here don't want to acknowledge the proven injury that results from prolonged, high-impact joint jarring, regardless of form. I've seen smokers live illness free into their 80's, smoking away like they did as a teen, but that won't convince me that lung cancer isn't an inevitability for the other 99% of the "lifers"....

Too bad he didn't ride a bike instead of running. That an all his gym work would have been plenty good in keeping him in shape and building endurance.
