Really struggled with the 2020 AVX yesterday.

Ist round out yesterday for my league and was really having a hard time with my yardages. The new AVX launches really low now comparing it to the 2019 model. I spent the past few weeks hitting balls in the driveway into a net with the Mevo and I had a good idea what my yardages were in a static environment. I was seeing a good 2 clubs longer and good 5-8 degrees less launch on the course. The big problem is the lack of spin with the low launch angle. I found my self on a few holes in the 130 yard range and hit 2 pitching wedges to the back of the greens which lasered 150 yards. One ball checked and the other released off the green. Had another 100 yard approach and hit lob wedge into the green and was still over the flag and 15 yards long leaving me a terrible downhill putt. Last 3 holes I switched to the 2020 Prov1x and my wedge game was restored but the iron shots were towering very high and very spinny and short. One of my last 130 approach shots was with a PW again and was 5 yards short on what I considered a clean strike. Im very conflicted with the AVX because I have played it since it came out and now find it to be unplayable. Its now too soft off the driver, mid irons are explosive to say the least and very long, short irons are too low and not enough spin. I have not played the 2020 Prov1 yet but it maybe the ball I play this year if its a compromise between the AVX and Prov1X. I spent alot of time on the Launch monitor and my 7 iron LA is always around 20 degrees with last years AVX and the 2020 has to be around 16-17 degrees. Crazy long I will say for sure but would have to be in the 4-5k spin from my estimates. Prov1x feels great but doesn't work well with the AP2's in my past experience.

Sorry, can't read a 12 line "run on" sentence.

So I'm not sure this comment is pertinent but I don't see a whole lot of difference between the previous generation and the new one other than the flight does seem to have gotten a bit lower..

In my opinion, The 2020 AVX is drastically different ball in the short irons and is a very energetic now. Last years AVX and even the ProV1x never really surprise me and seemed very linear to play. 2020 AVX is like playing with a Superbounce ball now.

The AVX is what I call an ‘unbalanced’ ball. It’s a distance ball that attempts to maintain adequate short game response by its cover. What that makes it, unfortunately to my thinking, is essentially a light switch; it’s either ON or OFF. Golf clubs and individual swings, on the other hand, are close to effectively infinite, so instead of getting an appropriate level of response, we get a switch.

Some balls are radically better at ‘following’ the user’s input.

V1 - the most consistent trajectory profile in the game.

TP5 - the multi layer construction is intended to do exactly as stated above, and is easily the best at discriminating between clubs.

V1x left dash - kind of in between those two. The driver response will be closer to the AVX.

Left Dash V1X might be worth a try, but it's going to feel like a rock in comparison to the AVX. It will definitely get launch up from the AVX and should hopefully give you a touch more spin on those shorter irons/wedges. The caveat is it's a FIRM ball. It's probably the firmest feeling ball I've played but if you can get over that it may be what you're looking for.

Looking back at my Flight scope numbers, The 2020 AVX is on average 2 degrees less launch than the previous years ball hitting into a net. On the course the launch is alot lower but looking at the PGA Trackman data it might actually be inline on where I should be. Yesterday I was 154 yards into a net with no warmup just to test out the AVX and get a benchmark. Im really thinking the spin numbers off the CCE mat are 1-2k rpm higher than what I saw off the grass on Tuesdays round. It was raining off and on so might of been a variable of wet ball/wet club reducing spin. The additional yardage was a added welcome and maybe I need a adjustment period to adapt to the ball. Im going to buy a sleeve of prov1's to compare numbers with. All my golf partners said the same thing, "take the added distance" and adjusted your game to play it.

Well if the ball was wet or club face then you are 100% going to get different results. I play AVX and alternate the TP5 in there to just simply see how AVX performs. They’re both very nice and maybe a little more consistency with TP5 with greenside spin. But if you’re playing in wet conditions then the ball will react different.

Played 9 tonight in my league with the ProV1 and shot my worse round in 2 years through 6 holes. Brutal conditions again being 49* and 15-20mph winds. ProV1 I didnt like any aspect of it. Too much spin and I actually thought it feels firmer then the ProV1x off the irons. I played the AVX the last 3 holes and I am starting to think its shorter off the driver then both models of the Prov’s. The extra club to club and half distance off the irons is the trade off. Reflecting on all 3 balls now the AVX might just stay in the bag. Im going to need a few more rounds to settle in with it.
