Charlotte Country Clubs

Most of the threads on here about country clubs in Charlotte are pretty dated. I'm looking for some new info...

I live near Myers Park, work at the airport, however I'm budget limited for pretty much anything close by, I can't afford a 5 digit initiation. I'm still under 35, so I'm eligible for most young professional memberships.

My goal would be for a club that is walkable, not snaked though neighborhoods with OB on every hole, and has a decent relaxed membership.

I am usually an off-peak golfer during the week, around a 7 handicap at the moment.

Cedarwood in Pineville has peaked my interest, as has Pine Lake in Mint Hill, however I can't get anyone there to return my calls or emails.

Any other good gouge on memberships in Charlotte?

I think Cedarwood is very crowded. Pine Lake is going to be a hassle to get to. Pine Island is near the airport, and I assume pretty inexpensive to join.

Sounds like Pine Island is perfect for you. It's a fun course, great walk, near the airport, and definitely affordable. The junior membership is 2K to join and dues are 215 for a single.

I agree with the idea of Pine Island. Everything there is new. They re-did the course and built a new clubhouse and pool in the past few years. Pine Lake is a great walking course although it's location would be a minus. You might consider Carolina. It's close to the airport and is a remodeled Donald Ross course. I have no idea about the fees involved. I would guess they have a decent number of younger members.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, when we get a stretch of good weather I'll go check out Pine Island as well. Pricing wise, it's right up my alley.
They totally screwed up Carolina's Donald Ross design a few years back. My friend and his family were members there for over 40 years now they are over at Pine Island. I like Pine Island myself and it is very walkable my friend and his daughters walk it all the time. And yes the clubhouse is great and the restaurant faculities are outstanding
Who did the renovation? If it was who I think it was, he has absolutely butchered some Ross courses. I played Carolina several times back in the 80s, and I thought it was a great course. It wasn't very fancy, and conditions were ok, but it had a lot of character. Forsyth Country Club here in Winston-Salem was restored to the "original" Ross design, and it has greens like I've never seen at any Ross course. It was a good, fun course, and the screwed it up.

Any update, which clubs did you like or dislike ?

Have you made a decision ?

My wife and I are considering joining a club.

I'm focusing on Pine Island right now, they seem to offer the best deals for what I am looking for. The weather hasn't worked out for me to go play it yet, but I did a few drive-bys and I liked the look of the layout and facilities. I'm looking to make a final decision around late February early March in time for Spring.

I looked at Raintree, cost was ok, but the course was exactly what I am not really looking for (houses and OB on every hole). Cedarwood seems to be very crowded (a little more expensive) but the layout looks good, and I think I'd like to take a serious look at it before I make a final decision as we do find ourselves down in Pineville more often than up by Mt. Holly.

I played one of the Raintree courses this winter ( dont remember which one ) It was a nice layout but yes houses and OB on most holes. Conditions were good for how wet it was.

I haven't had the chance to play any other private courses.

I figured I'd follow up on this thread, I ended up joining Pine Island about a month ago. It was exactly what I was looking for in terms of price, course, and overall feel. Very happy with the condition of the course and facilities as well.

Piper Glen has fallen on really hard times....serious financial issues and no longer well taken care of. It use to be a really solid club and still has great bones/layout but today it would be considered in the lowest tier of Private Clubs in Charlotte.

interesting - how is the membership? are there a bunch of young members there and regular games to be found?

Anybody live in Charlotte have information about Raintree Country Club? My wife and I (both in our mid 30s) recently moved to the south charlotte area and are looking at joining a club. I saw there are other clubs in the area (Cedarwood, Providence, etc) but with 36 holes it seemed like a no brainer relative to the other clubs with only 18 holes. However in looking at some prices online, it seems that Raintree is the also the most affordable (monthly dues and initation) relative to the other two mentioned. I called Raintree recently and confirmed they do not have a wait list. Anybody "in the know" about Charlotte country clubs have any more information on Raintree or recommendations on other clubs?

Raintree is decent. Cedarwood is a much better layout especially if walking matters to you. The Raintree courses are pretty spread out and I can't imagine walking either. That said I have a number of friends down there - some decent and very good players (played in college) and they enjoy it. It is definitely one of the most affordable private clubs in Charlotte. If you reach out to their membership director I'm sure you could get out for a tour and a round.
