What's Your Longest Streak w/o Shanking It?

Recommended Posts

Yea, super pronounced on wedges. that was mostly in jest but the premise remains true...

most am’s I have played with stand close to the ball, compact, and hands close to body. It cause a lot of heel/hosel strikes at worst, at best they come out to in and stand up a bit thru the swing and that has produced some regular shanks/poor contact.

I still say if u have a miss that’s creeping into you swing process and thoughts regularly, have someone you trust show you some good counter measures. Shanks can be a fairly short fix relative to a lot of other issues. Here is a pic of my dirty but newish wedge I Just took.the finish wears off near the toe because I stand decently distance from ball, decent upright posture and hands have space to come in to out path. I started doing this on some advice from a pro when he saw me shanking chips, so thankful for him. never looked back. Lw-driver, I make sure those principles still in place.

hope this helps, good luck man the shanks suck

I have only shanked it one time on a course. Was 13 or 14 playing with my grandpa and his friends. I was visiting from out of state and since he lived right on the course, he gave me a backup set of clubs to use, and took me out. I had played a bit of golf at my local par 3 course over the few summers leading up to this, but had never played a full 18 hole course. I had never swung anything longer than a 7 wood in my life. And of course on the first tee, I stripe a drive right down the middle. I think the group got a little too much confidence, and the other cart pulled up ahead of me on the right side before my second shot. I proceed to brutally shank a 4 iron, the ball flew right at the cart 3 or 4 feet in the air, hit my grandpa's friends's hand as he was going to bite an apple. He dropped it and starting wincing in pain. I was mortified and apologized over and over. He couldn't regroup and ended up leaving for the day. Our threesome was pretty quiet after that and everyone kept a safe distance. Never got a follow up story if the old man's hand was broken or not. Maybe he played the next day, maybe he never played again. Oops.

So that was my one shank 20 years ago. However, on the range, I shank them all the time, but I also try stupid stuff that I would never try on the course. For some reason my mind is good at drawing flight patterns like Bubba Watson, except I cannot hit any of them.

I think you and I have collectively had posts like this over the years. Dude, I'm saying it and maybe it's not right, but I don't think they'll ever stop for us. It's chronic and likely mental as much physical. I paid for two lessons in the last week where I couldn't even produce a shanked shot to show the instructor and then as soon as he's gone I proceed to let one heel shot turn into a necked one and then boom.....

They go into remission for guys like us, but they don't go away. Sad, but true.

You are right, but... we are gonna get this figured out. (I'm in sales, one thing that makes me good is I'm persistent, or as my wife (and Monte might agree with her) calls it -stubborn as a mule.) Some nights I'm just going about my merry way hitting balls, and voila - there she blows, showing up for no good reason out of no where,, mostly for shorter shots. My current fix is - firmer grip than what I'm used to, make sure I turn right hip behind, even for shorter shots. My issue is my right hip really fires and pushes my right arm out. So try that.I get lazy from hitting too many balls and stop turning, I Just start lifting my arms. Don't give up, you'll find a way.

One other idea I heard from Jake Hutt and Monte's live instagram- (i have stayed away from doing this due to the horror show that might enfold, but it's time to put aside my fears) try video'ing when you get a chance. Maybe you'll "get Lucky" and hit a shank on video and can figure out what was the cause. Can only hope!

I hope you do. I read enough and talked to some people and determined it's more than I want to tackle to "fix". I think it's a mental block sort of thing and that's more than I can realistically fix. The fear will always be there for me which means I'll always be at risk to start necking it. I'm hoping this legal separation from golf somehow miraculously cures me or allows me to walk away from it and find other things to do with my time. I spend a ton of money and time on golf so the rational part of my brain hopes it makes me want to walk away for good. The kid in me knows I don't have any other "sport" or hobbies and hopes I'll wake up cured one day. Life is pretty boring without sports.

I think I see the problem... you are trying to rationalize all of this!! Give Extra's stuff a the top of this page a try, like the sound of what he's espousing. One of these days you'll be free of these. Then something else will pop up, putter or driver will go astray.

Like I said, trying to bring a rational mind to all this could drive us all nuts!!
