Ping iron opinion

Okay. Ping iron loyalist here. I learned on EYE 2's (zz stiff shafts) I've had i-5s i-10s i15and I'm currently in i-20s with KBS tour stiff. Looking at i210s. My typical miss is a little off the toe and I play a draw. If anything I would like a little more trajectory as I tend to be a lower ball player. I definitely prefer the KBS to any true temper or rifle shaft I've tried. I don't know my iron swing speed but I hit my eight iron 155. Based on this information will I like the i210s? If so should I stay with the KBS tour or look at other shaft options to try to get more trajectory?

You should hit the i210 irons higher than i20. The i210 is a really forgiving head with high launch and slightly lower spin rate. They will definitely feel softer than your old irons also. I don’t think you cloud go wrong using the same shaft you have before, but really you should get fit to see your best option.

I wouldn’t change shafts on the KBS if they’re working for you, they’re good shafts to begin with and launch a touch higher than TT or Px.

The Modus 120 might give you similar launch to the KBS but a different feel can throw your swing off.

If your really pressed for more height, you can drop down to the 105 weight range, but I would see what your current launch numbers are to begin with?

For all you know, you could be launching the ball at the right launch angle and spin rate.

Ive played all above mentioned shafts in the past and currently on Px Rifles and LZ in my two sets.

My mishits are toe side as well and the the i210 are forgiving enough.

What I was sold on was one, the feel was surprisingly soft and the launch numbers were true but more importantly also consistent.

My other set are 2018 Callaway Apex MP which I reference off for feel.

OP, try the Mizuno shaft optimizer for some suggestions for shafts. Great fitting tool. Ping now has a new Web-Fit up on their site. A lot better than the old one! Again, nothing beats getting fit by a good fitter! Even a ball can influence ball flight.

Your 6 iron swing speed is likely in the mid-upper 80's.

i210's are awesome. About as forgiving as an iron of it's size can be. I think you would be safe to order some with the KBS Tour shafts. PX LZ shafts might also be worth a try since they are a no cost option and have similar weight and trajectory characteristics. They feel quite different from conventional PX shafts so don't let the name put you off.

In terms of "go get fitted" is concerned, it seems to me that your long past history of using i series Ping's is enough to put you in i210's safely. Shafts are mostly about weight and feel. Some demo's in a hitting stall so you can judge feel for yourself should provide reasonable assurance for an order.

Unfortunately, the relationship between iron swingspeed and driver swingspeed can vary from golfer to golfer. Two players can have the same driver swingspeed, yet have different iron swingspeed.

Another golf forumite and I discovered this at an outing in 2002. He and I had similar distance off the tee, but he was longer with irons. Chatting about it, we found that our 5 iron speed was 8-10 mph different, while our driver speed was identical.

Just another reason we can't fit our iron shaft choices based on driver swingspeeds.

From Maltby -

The MPF on the i210 is 338 points, putting it in the Classic category. The numbers will be posted online by the end of the day. Basically, the ratings are a result of high vertical cg locations and shorter blade lengths.

On the surface, 338 is close to bizarrely low for any cavity-back iron. The reason appears to be that Ping raised the CG from the i200 to give them a lower trajectory and therefore more distance, which was the general complaint in the earlier version. As a lower trajectory player who seems to prefer tip-stiff shafts, I’d be significantly hesitant in a blind purchase.

I'm a low ball hitter w/ low spin, and I was fit with the i200's (Retro lofts 2 degrees weak) with TT XP95 shafts. The XP95 is a high launching shaft with high spin. I previously played KBS Tour and Nippon 950GH's, and the TT stacks up well against them. I hit my 8 iron 155 yds (total).

As noted, the i210 is a little lower launching than the i200s. Perhaps you should consider the i200s. 'Very little difference in feel IMO. The i210s may be a tad softer.

While I usually am in agreement with your observations, throwing out the MPF for a particular iron based on one individual’s experience is exactly contrary to why MPF is of value. If you hit down on the ball generally, the high CG either won’t be a factor at all, or may be an advantage. On the other hand, if you’re a sweeper or otherwise tend to miss thin, a CG as high as the i210’s can really mess you up. A CG higher than the mid-point of the face is almost unique. It’s not a universally targeted iron.

I don't know if this helps but when I was fitted for my i200's my final choice on shafts was between the KBS and TT DG300s. I went with the TT because I've had them previously with good success but honestly I spent hours on the range hitting 7 irons with one of each that my pro set me up with, going back and forth, and I loved them both. I truly almost bought two sets because I couldn't decide which I liked better.

Even now a couple of years later remembering this, I'm laughing as during the test I said "this is the one" on each shaft at least a dozen times.

If you like KBS shafts, I'm pretty sure you'll love the i210's with them.

Worrying about MPF is a waste of time. In all my years of being here I've never read about anyone complaining that any of the Ping i-series clubs hit the ball to low so I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about that either. Look at MOI which is the gauge of forgiveness. Overall the i200 and i210 are a coin flip so the suggestion to go with the older set might be a good one if you can save a few bucks.

Try out the i210 model. As others have said, a fitting will help you find the right shaft.
Remember that Ping offers a variety of stock shafts with its irons. If a KBS shaft is a bit low-launching with i210, you might try the AWT 2.0 in Stiff. The "ascending weight technology" means the longer iron shafts weigh less than the shorter iron shafts. This would help with launch in the longer irons - where most golfers need it - without ballooning the ball in the shorter irons.
You might also try the i700 and i710 models. I tried the i710 at the golf expo with lighter shafts and didn't really like it - not much feel. I wrote about my ideas. Two single-digit HDCP Wrx-ers responded they loved the clubs, although they had more robust shafts than I had hit. Evidently i710 is a bit more "shaft sensitive" than some models.
Also, have you tried any of the PX LZ shafts? They had good feel for me, but I couldn't get much distance out of them. (I'm almost 70 and do better with sub-100 gram shafts).@Nessism said: "Worrying about MPF is a waste of time. I find MPF to be a good initial guide, but in the case of the i200 I agree. As per reviews and MPF the i200 should have been too much for me, but with the AWT 2.0 shafts I did just fine - like, I could hit a 4i off the deck!

I agree with this. MPF is a series of measurements with some getting far greater value in determining the “rating.” It does not seem to account for thin faced or hollow irons that definitely launch higher. Some of my favorite clubs had abysmal MPF numbers and some of the really highly rated ones feel so horrible I would stop playing golf before I would play them. I trust Ping’s engineers far more than I do MPF. Any even decent ball striker can play the i210 in my opinion.

I'd love a two hour fitting, my fitter is closed during the virus and it appears our Ping van is laying low until later this summer. I am really leaning on just ordering the KBS tour stiff to my existing spec as I really loved them (still due) after switching in 2013.

I just want to feel/ notice a net positive from my i20s. I am okay with my tradjectory currently but can afford to lose any. Some extra height would be a bonus. Have any of you compared these vs the i20 in general?

Also who ever mentioned the ball thing is spot on. I was a prov1x guy for years and found Tour grade Callaway and Bridgestone balls help me so much more!!!

Thanks guys for all the information this is awesome as I am not much of a forum guy!

Well, I can't speak to the i210s, but if you want more trajectory, try a TP5x ball. I was shocked at how much higher they launched than the prov1 I play.

I can hardly tell a difference in flight between the various premium balls except the tp5x. I swear the TP5x was a solid 20 feet higher flying on my 7 iron. It was crazy, too high for me to play.

Could just be my particular swing tho.

Played Ping irons for about 30 years, most recently i200 with Accra shafts. Earlier this year demoed the i210 and i500, but purchased Honma TW X forged irons. Best iron I tested, feel and turf interaction are exceptional. With this said, you can never go wrong with PIng!

Interesting you mentioned this ball. I had a sleeve from an outing and played really well with them, I remember thinking the ball felt heavy. Especially off my driver and hybrid. Not hard, but heavy, and I didn't care for that sensation. However I might have to revisit those. I don't love the feel of the current Bridgestones I am gaming. (I do love how long they are with my driver... Hmm)

Update. Had a fitting today. Loved the i210. Ordered them with the same KBS tour stiff. Definitely softer feeling. Similar tradjectory and spin to my i20s. Tighter dispersion which I was really hoping for. Hit the blueprints. Unquestionably the best feeling Ping. Better feeling than any Titleist forged that I have hit. Mizuno mp60 are the only irons I could say we're 100% softer (pretty sure I hit those back in '98.) If you're a low enough handicap to hit those little blades I strongly consider the blueprint. My best three shots and my worst three shots at my fitting were with the blueprint.
