There's a misconception that a downward handpath steepens the shaft and an outward handpath shallows the club. That is not always the case. A lot of world class swings combine a downward handpath with a flat shaft. Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia are good examples.

Yep, CLOCKWISE rotation of the arms triangle (assuming a right handed golfer) is what primarily flattens the shaft.

There's one of his vids, where he talks about the PGA pro who turned him around, after he spent years trying to pull club to impact with lots of lag which did not work for Mike. He likes to mention that Nicklaus said (and he worked with JN, head of his JN school) you can't release the club too soon. His method seems a work around that gets you to the right impact position. Clearly there's more than one way or feel to get there.

Malaski has two series on Youtube as well. His own channel and his regular appearances on the Be Better Golf channel. His lessons have filled in so many gaps for me. My swing and game has improved so much since I started watching him this season.

Note: He's not following the trends (swinging with the body aka rotational swings) and teaches more in line with what Nicklaus taught (hands and arms). No sliding or reverse-c, just that the body knows what to do already when you are swinging the club around the body.

There's a few videos where he discussed how he practiced on the range for hours trying to do a certain move and it didn't make him better. He also had a crappy teacher who didn't know where to stand taking pictures of his swing which made him work on things that didn't need fixing. Jack Nicklaus' practice routine was also very smart. 36 holes a day and minimal time on the range or putting green. We tend to get caught up in how the swing looks and technique and fail to put it into practice on the course where it counts.

I'm going to put on my flame suit and throw out my thoughts. I'm not an instructor, just a player who has worked through swing changes like everyone else. I think the lack of response on this from the instructors on this site is not surprising.

I think everyone gets too tied up in the interpretation of the literal details and "feels" he is describing.. of course the club does not come over the hands like he shows when he is demonstrating a "feel". When demonstrating the "feel" the club does not even get close to the ground. In the context of what you know about your swing, there is a lot of good content there if we step back and look at a bigger picture. It is not flipping, and doesn't result in a weak swing/flight. Combining some of his thoughts and ideas into my swing has me as long as I have ever been. Do I exclusively use his "move"? I doubt it, but I have gained insight about my swing and how it feels from his videos.

Could be because the Malaska move has already been discussed ad nauseam on this forum.

Malaska and GG have two completely different swing and teaching styles. You may want to consider which school of thought you want to follow. They are both legit.

Agree. The former is hand/arms drive the body, the latter is body drives the hands/arms (roughly speaking). Personally, I can't think of more than one thing during the golf swing, in particular I can either concentrate on rotating my body OR swinging my hand/arms. If I do the latter then my body gets stuck and I simply stand up instead of rotating. The former is harder on my 70-year old (come 6/1) body.

I will say this, one of the real attractions of MM is that, at least IMO, he is really good at explaining things in a soothing voice. He makes sense and appeals to those of us who feel lost relative to our golf swing. It's reassuring to be told that it's not you, it's all the crazy things you've been told to do, I have a logical approach to the swing. GG is really funny but all over the place and hard to follow, again for me. Please don't take this as dumping on Mike, his is a time-worn approach, he's marketing his product, which is fine. It's just that ultimately (to quote Raymond Massey in "Things to Come") it's either this or that. Whichever approach works is the right approach for you. Of course, if you're like me and NEITHER works, well, then............

Harry Redknapp on signing good-looking Portuguese winger Dani, he told reporters:

"My missus fancies him. Even I don't know whether to play him or f**k him."

MM doesn't teach focusing on the arms. Just recognizing that it's the arms and hands that take the lead in the swing and that the body will follow. Which is nearly the opposite of GG. I've tried to implement his teachings (via Youtube) for almost a year now with good results. He has less swing thoughts that what I get from GG and prefers not to talk about positions unlike GG. MM talks about swing path and how the body will naturally position itself to your path without really thinking about it.

Can anyone compare Mike Malaska’s program to Adam Bazelgette’s? Adam is at scratch Golf Academy. At the beginning of the season, I thought I was making progress on my swing. I now find myself completely lost, reverting to my old swing faults I had 15 years ago. I like how GG teaches, but I don’t want to commit to a year.
