nope, but there are folks who say it's not worth it and go spend the cash on 4,5 and 8 or even go to mid pines or dormie or tobacco. not buying it.

Note that Dormie/Mid Pines/Pine Needles / Tobacco are 50-60% less then No.2. All the courses you listed are excellent tracks Plus if you ask the pro shop for repeat round at those courses you normally get a replay rate. No.2 they do not discount it regardless.

For me I like spending a couple days on the property. Get in 3 or 4 rounds. Then it’s a total world class golf experience. You just “get into it”. If you get a full package the numbers get a bit better. You can’t just say “is this worth x dollars”. I’ve said before It’s a lot of dollars but at the same time it’s excellent value.

What can be said that hasn't already been said about Ross' finest work of art in #2? I can tell you this much, no picture or video or painting can do it justice if you haven't seen it for yourself. It is like stepping back in time and playing something that is out of a golf course design museum.

Conditions were a perfect 10 and as one caddie said, it is US Open ready right now. So much has been said about the greens and rightfully so, they are unlike anything you have ever seen. When you miss and you will miss(or not hold) a green, your chip shot will be hit with no perspective for distance, It will inevitably be up hill without sight of the hole and off a tight lie. It is something to behold.

Tee to green is fair but the fairways are on the tighter side and a miss will be left to fate in the copious amounts of sand and wire grass where you will undoubtedly find your ball but be praying for a good lie while looking.

This is a course that demands precision and short games will be exposed. Still no matter the score, the more you reflect on it, the more you will love it. It is an experience akin to the Old Course, Muirfield, Pebble, etc. It is a must -do and one you will want to do again. No trip to Pinehurst is complete without a visit here.

After your round, you will sit on the veranda, cocktail in hand and watch this beauty as the sun sets and the pines cast their shadows across the landscape. You will reflect on shots made and missed, then yearn to walk it again,

Last year I played #2, Pine Needles, Dormie Club, and Tobacco Road.

I thought Pine Needles was harder than #2, and if I ever return to NC I would play Tobacco Road again.

Dont think he was saying it cost him that... just that if will be extra if you do. I walked it with push cart.. IT IS FLAT so an easy walk.

Unless you've played there before I would recommend getting a caddie unless you're on a tight budget. Just standing on the first tee you look down the fairway and wonder where to aim as all you see is sand. My caddie watched me hit balls on the range and quickly learned my yardages. This became helpful during the round. But a caddie is priceless when reading the greens. I'm a decent golfer and like to think I can read a green but at #2 its difficult (understatement). Its a nasty course to score on. Getting near the green in regulation is not that difficult but staying on is another matter.

i took it as that's his suggestion and only option. As far as apples to apples comparison to MP or TR, those are all normal rates without caddies. So yeah, it would cost 200 bucks extra to play. Now if you value the convenience of a cart and think it's added value compared to no.2 then that's on you. a cart would do you no good on no.2 either way.

Agree a cart would not as it is path only. I think Pine Needles is a stronger course overall, No.2 greens for sure are tougher. I am glad I played it to check it off the list but not sure i would do it again unless it was part of a package deal

I didn't say that. I merely indicated that when you want to figure out the expense, you'd better add in the caddie fees, which are substantial. Personally, I walked, and I didn't think I lost too much by not having a caddie. Most of the course is right there in front of you.

The expense is 400 or so. If you want A caddy then you may pay more. It is not mandatory. Therefore why would I include it in the final rack rate when I’m trying to compare rack rate with other clubs that don’t include caddies ?

In a word, no. Go play #8. It's only worth it to cross it off your collect list.

It is not surprising that some think it is worth it and others don't - it's completely subjective. I played it 2 years ago (along with #8 and #9) and I thought it was one of the best golfing experiences I've had. We had a beautiful day, the course was in perfect condition, our caddies were great and I was with my brother and good friends. And we can't wait to do it again in September (playing #2, #4 and #8). I will add I rarely spend that kind of money on greens fees/caddies and don't think I would do it regularly, meaning several times each year. But once per year or every other year, if you can afford it doesn't seem excessive to me for the experience. YMMV.

Pinehurst is one of my favorite places. I love going to the clubhouse, eating at the Deuce, and just soaking up the atmosphere. That being said, I doubt I’ll ever pay to play #2. For me, that’s just too much to spend on golf. I might pay to play Pebble, but that is a much more scenic course. #2 really isn’t much to look at.

Agreed. Ironically #2 is probably the least attractive course of the nine but is full of history. The original location of the golf hall of fame, the Donald Ross house, the Payne Stewart statue, etc. In the clubhouse are trophies of the Championships played there (Men's US Open, Women's US Open, PGA, Ryder Cup, US Amateur, Senior Men's US Open). As I said in an earlier post if you go down for a couple of days you melt right into the atmosphere. Everything is first rate - the golf, the dining, lodging, the staff. When something is truly memorable that's what counts. The extra money spent is long forgotten.

I am heading down to Pinehurst in two weeks. Staying off the resort and have rounds planned at Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Dormie and Tobacco Road. Debating whether or not to add #2 this trip or wait for a return trip that includes a stay and package at Pinehurst Resort.

A young guy that I know, that plays at my course won the North-South a couple of years ago, so I got to see his name on the wall the last time down . That was very cool!

More cost effective for No.2-8-4 if you stay at the resort. The rota you have set is what I did my first time down and you can not go wrong with it...!! All great tracks

depends on your financial situation... what is "worth" something to me may not be "worth" it to you.. but its your money... spend it how you like

Would you pay $5,000 for a super bowl ticket? If the answer is yes, then play it. If the answer is no, wait until the fall when the rates go down. If you appreciate golf and it's history, the course is a must play. Like the old course in St Andrews or Pebble Beach. As to the competition question, that area is loaded with good golf courses. But there is only one #2. They don't play US Opens on #8 or #4, both are outstanding. The girls play an Open at Pine Needles just down the road, great golf course. It's not #2.

If it's on your bucket list, do it. Otherwise skip it and play some other options. You can always drive to the clubhouse for a snack and some swag.

I like Pine Needles as a different option. It's one of my favorite courses and has a lot of history from hosting a few US Women's opens. In some ways it's a little more scenic and fun than #2. I booked a 36 day hole at Mid Pines and Pine Needles in late July and the cost of those two combined is less than playing #4.

If you know a member and can finagle your way into CCNC the Dogwood course there is great as well (Cardinal too, but a little lesser than Dogwood).
