Callaway Super Hybrid, no video reviews?

I've been resisting updating my equipment because despite A LOT of practice and effort, my game had not been improving. My dad got some new clubs, so I took most of his old clubs off his hands. I had been playing Ping G5 hybrids (19 and 23) circa about 2006. These things were barely hybrids. If you look at the shape, they kind of just look like chunky super game improvement irons compared to modern hybrids that have a more fairway wood shaped head. So I took my dad's 19 degree taylormade rocketballz hybrid, and suddenly I have a much more playable reliable hybrid. I've found I've been using it a ton. I've also finally made some progress with my game, so I'm more open to updating my equipment. I was thinking about getting fitted, but due to covid, those plans are on hold, even though my local fitter is open for business.

I was most interested in the Callaway Super Hybrid, especially as a 3w replacement. However, even though it's been out a while, I can't find a single non-promo video review. Does anyone know of any reviews? Are any of y'all gaming a super hybrid as a wood replacement with good results?

Thanks!

I had the 20* with stock pro orange 80 shaft. It was a solid performer but for a very specific shot. Think of it more as long iron flight wise. Mid height, low spin. Not a hybrid I had success with in terms of hitting it to a number, but if I needed a 230 yard fairway finder off the tee this club did that job very very well. Stupid easy to pinch it off the turf or out of the rough, but limited control on distance and how far it runs when it lands.

I switched to a PXG 19* gen 2 with tensei pro blue. Flies higher, spins more, and I have more control over hitting one high to land it on 220 exactly, or I can play a mid flight draw that runs out to 240. It’s a better fit for my game, but the super hybrid is one of the best clubs Callaway has ever made if it fits the shot/flight you need.

You mention that you struggle some with your current hybrids, but how do you get along with fairway woods?

The Super Hybrid is a fantastic club. Depends on your game, but for me it is better as wood replacement or a max distance club on 2nd shots on long par 5s where you are just looking to advance the ball as far as possible. Not something you necessarily want in higher lofts to be hitting into greens constantly. That's why I like the 20 and especially the 17 degree option, where you can replace a 3/4/5 wood. At 23 degrees, I am looking for something with more spin and height to hold greens and to hit reliable distance numbers.

About 6 months ago now, I swapped out my 4W at 17*, for the Adams Super Xtd Ti hybrid in the same loft. It's probably the closest thing to the Callaway Super Hybrid model. My contact is just much more consistent with the hybrid than it was with the 4 wood. Shaft is shorter, turf interaction is better, and besides losing some height, I'm really not sacrificing any distance. Especially considering that a miss hit now is a slight pull going 240, whereas with the 4 wood a mishit would sometimes be a topped ball that was lucky to go 50 yards.

I struggled a lot with my old hybrids. Google a Ping G5 hybrid and you'll see what I'm talking about. It looks worlds away from the rocketballz I game now, which isn't a particularly new club itself. I'm hitting the rocketballz hyrbid very well, but it's really a 200 yard club for me at best. Realistically, no matter how good the lie or clean the contact, if it's not downhill, it's a 180-200 club depending on roll and conditions.

I carry an old 3w that I really never hit. I think I hit it once on vacation in the Outer Banks last year. I had about 200 in, and I rolled it right up on the green. But really, it's much harder to hit than my current hybrid, and I don't get much more out of it because I'm afraid of bad contact on a full swing. I have never hit it as reliably as my driver, so I don't use it off the tee either. Right now, I really only use my driver, and the next club down is my TM rocketballz 19 hyrbid. I'm thinking that the super hybrid could be a 3w replacement that I would actually use, ideally off the tee and as a second shot on long holes. I need something to fill the gap between my driver and current hybrid.

Sounds like you could be a good candidate for a lower lofted hybrid to replace a wood. Just keep in mind that hybrids are obviously smaller than woods. The center of gravity will not be as far back, so they will not launch as high. The shorter shaft is going to result in a slower swing speed, which also reduces the launch. So if you have a slower swing speed, you are likely to be giving up some yards with a low lofted hybrid. For me, the pros outweigh the cons.

You could also look at the Srixon H85, which comes in a 16 degree and has a pretty good price on it right now.

I just picked up a 17° and have played once. The wind was blowing quite hard hurting either into my face or across; I found the Super Hybrid to play very long and easy to control. Straight to a slight fade when I normally worry about a hook. My driver speed is between 100-105 mph and my Epic Flash 3 wood at 13.5° off the tee will carry 230...off the deck, who knows, but mostly a long slicing shot when I need a draw is typical. I even played the Super Hybrid from 190 with a little 3/4 swing with a cross wind and was pin high off the green by <5 yards, which is the planned miss because of the water left. I ordered the 23° before I left the course. The PO shaft in stiff really feels whippy, but I don't have any issues with controlled it at all...plus I like the little fade. The ball goes very, very high but I am getting amazing distance, even into the wind. I did hit a couple balls WAY out on the toe from the tee...I didn't miss the face, but certainly 1/2 ball or more from the sweet spot. Those shots looked like a duck hook only to the right (duck slice?) that were about 15' off the ground...they were right of my intended target by 15 yards but almost full distance...that shot with a 3 or 5 wood would have been very short and in the trees. For me, this club works just like Callaway said it would- I will be taking my fairways out of the bag. Now...if I could just get it down to 14 or 15° I would probably only play my driver 2 or 3 times per round.
