first time breaking 80

Recommended Posts

After being a real hacker for a long time I decided to really improve at the end of last year. I was successful. I've been a 16 index ever since I got my index a couple years ago. But, I was always capable of shooting over 100 ...haha. But, after really working on my game the past several months I've been showing real signs of improvement. with a couple low scores just recently. Yesterday I finally got to go play The Links at Rolling Hills for the first time. It's a course owned by an Indian tribe up north from us and it's a beautiful links layout over a huge patch of rolling grassland. I really liked it. Designed by John Daly. Anyway, I made the turn at 1 over. Came in with a 79, though. A couple overcooked shots helped along by a 15 mph wind from the south, a couple bad putts and one unlucky bounce into a bunker on the back 9. But I'm really happy with the round. Played the middle tees. Made the par 5 #10 in two - "really looks like I know what I'm doing", I like to say jokingly. Anyway, this is an exciting new game for me. Really, really enjoyed that course. I highly recommend it. Had something funny happen, too. At the turn I mentioned to the starter how we discovered few snakes out on the course, including a beautiful and big green racer. I asked about rattlers - we have em around where I live. He said, "Nope, we don't have those here." Then, we found one on our way to 18...after traipsing around carelessly in the hip-high grasses on several holes helping my buddies look for their wayward shots.

The work on my transition was based on two lessons with our head pro (who I would describe as a swing plane guru), and starting to work with a TPI trainer. My body is really a wreck due mainly to football. We have really improved my hip and shoulder mobility and I have taken a liking to working on better separation in my torso. Has paid huge dividends for me. The swing takes much less effort now.

Congrats on your Achievement! I’m looking forward to doing the same someday. The things we learn along the journey and stories we have to share is probably the best part of golf in my book.

I’ve been stuck on an 80 low for (2) years now. My first 80 round I had a triple on Hole #1 and then came home +1 over on the back nine. I missed a 5 ft birdie putt from 2” into the rough just off the fringe on the 18th. The ball ran 3ft past the hole. Then I missed the par putt too...Oopsie.

My last 80 round I tripled the 18th, where a bad unintentional draw shaped approach landed me right behind a dang telephone pole left of the green where there were mid size trees and shrubs between the telephone pole and green I had to go over. Had the ball went another yard or two the ball would have went OB across the road.

Being grateful for just finding the ball, I decided to play it where it was. I had a line but the telephone pole was restricting my swing big time. I needed to flop a wedge over trees. I gave it my best attempt without damaging the wedge but I knew in my gut I needed close to a 3/4 swing. I bailed out on the swing with 1/2 a swing making sure not to damage my club. The ball flew right into the top of tree finding the non 90% air portion that eventually led to my most memorable triple train wreck.

I knew I had a good round going but had no idea how really great it was because my partner was minding the scorecard that day and we never add the card up until the end of the round. In hindsight, had I known what was really on line when I behind that telephone pole, I would have made a swing that would twisted my wedge shaft around the pole like it was mandrel...Lol.

Again, Congrats on Your Success.

Well done! Sounds like you put in the work and deserve it.

If I put in the work I might get there. Shot 80 twice but on PAR 70 tracks.

Someday.
